PAK vs AFG: Pakistan reach ODI Rankings summit with Afghanistan sweep

COLOMBO: A collective bowling effort after Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s half-centuries, led Pakistan to the top of the ODI Rankings with a clean sweep victory in the PAK vs AFG ODI series.

Set to chase 269 in the third PAK vs AFG ODI, Afghanistan could only raise 209 despite Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s brisk half-century.

The hosts got off to a dismal start to the pursuit as they lost their in-form batters Rahmanullah Gurbaz (5) and Ibrahim Zadran (0)in the 10th over with just 30 runs on the board.

Following back-to-back dismissals, Afghanistan’s new opener Riaz Hassan was then joined by captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and the pair raised 30 runs for the third-wicket stand.

The pair batted cautiously before Shadab Khan sparked a collapse in Afghanistan’s batting lineup by removing both batters in the same over.

Riaz scored a cautious 34 off 66 deliveries while Shahidi scored a 31-ball 13.

Afghanistan then lost three more wickets in quick succession and slipped to 97/7 in 32.1 overs with both Mohammad Nabi (3) and Rashid Khan (16) back into the dugout.

Coming out to bat at number nine, Mujeeb Ur Rahman glimmered a ray of hope for the depleted Afghanistan side as he launched a counterattack on the Pakistan bowlers with belligerent hitting.

He put on an astonishing 57-run partnership with Shahidullah to keep Afghanistan in the hunt.

Mujeeb dominated his eighth-wicket stand with Shahidullah by scoring the majority of the runs while the latter batted cautiously before eventually falling victim to Shadab Khan in the 40th over.

Shahidullah struck two boundaries on his way to a 65-ball 37.

Meanwhile, Mujeeb continued dominating Pakistan bowlers with clean hitting and soon put on another vital partnership for Afghanistan as he added 45 runs for the ninth-wicket stand with Fareed Ahmad before finally perishing in the 46th over.

He top-scored for Afghanistan with a quickfire 37-ball 64 which featured five boundaries and as many sixes.

Pakistan ace pacer Shaheen then wrapped a dominant 59-run victory for Pakistan as he castled Fareed (17) in the penultimate over.

Shadab Khan led the bowling attack for Pakistan with 3/42 while Shaheen, Faheem and Nawaz bagged two each.

Opting to bat first in the third PAK vs AFG ODI of the three-match series, led by Pakistan 2-0, the green shirts accumulated 268/8 at the back of anchoring half-centuries by Babar and Rizwan.

Pakistan’s opening pair of Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq failed to provide a solid start to their side as they could raise 36 runs before returning Gulbadin Naib dismissed the former in the ninth over.

He could score 27 off 33 deliveries, laced up with five boundaries.

Naib then struck again in the 13th over to get rid of in-form Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq, who scored a scratchy 13 off 30 deliveries, hitting only one boundary.

With the side reeling at 52/2 in 12.5 overs, Babar Azam was joined by Mohammad Rizwan at the crease and the duo knitted an anchoring partnership for the third wicket.

Babar and Rizwan added 110 runs amid their cautious stand with both scoring half-centuries before Rashid Khan provided a much-needed breakthrough to Afghanistan, dismissing the Pakistan captain.

He smashed four boundaries and a six on his way to an 86-ball 60.

Babar’s dismissal opened the floodgates for Pakistan as they lost four wickets in quick succession, including their mainstay Mohammad Rizwan, and slipped to 189/6 in 41 overs.

Rizwan remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with a 79-ball 67 which featured six boundaries and a six.

Following the slump, Mohammad Nawaz and Salman Ali Agha stitched a vital 61-run partnership for the seventh wicket and added crucial runs at a brisk rate in the death overs before Nawaz fell in the penultimate over.

He scored a brisk 25-ball 30, hitting two boundaries and a six.

Meanwhile, Agha carried his bat all the way through with a 31-ball 38, which included four boundaries and a six.

Fareed Ahmad and Gulbadin Naib bagged two wickets each for Afghanistan in the third PAK vs AFG ODI while Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan made one scalp each.

Naseem Shah, who clinched a thrilling one-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the previous edition of the Asia Cup with two final-over sixes, once again steered Pakistan to a close victory in the second ODI of the series over the same opposition.

Meanwhile, in the first ODI, Haris Rauf’s maiden five-wicket haul propelled Pakistan to register a crushing 142-run victory over Afghanistan on Tuesday.

The series is the first bilateral ODI series between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Before this series, they played only four ODIs and Pakistan remained unbeaten in all.

Afterwards, the Pakistan team will face Nepal in the curtain raiser of the Asia Cup, starting on August 30 at Multan Cricket Stadium.

Pakistan will host a total of four matches including a Super 4s fixture, while the rest of the games including the final will be played in Sri Lanka.

PAK vs AFG: Naseem Shah stuns Afghanistan again as Pakistan prevail

HAMBANTOTA: Naseem Shah once again proved his mettle as a composed finisher after Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam’s half-centuries as Pakistan came from behind to edge Afghanistan by one wicket in a nail-biting second PAK vs AFG ODI on Thursday.

With a sensational one-wicket victory in the second PAK vs AFG ODI, the Green Shirts sealed the three-match series 2-0 with a game to spare.

Naseem Shah, who clinched a thrilling one-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the previous edition of the Asia Cup with two final-over sixes, once again steered Pakistan to a close victory over the same opposition.

The right-arm pacer, who proved his mettle with the bat in numerous crunch situations, stole the spotlight with a tense finish despite Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam’s half-centuries and Shadab Khan’s gutsy 48.

With Pakistan needing 11 runs in the final over, the enthralling contest got a lot more interesting when Fazalhaq Farooqi mankaded Shadab during his run-up to bowl the first delivery.

Afghanistan started things steadily after winning the toss, as their openers dealt with Pakistan’s pace attack sensibly.

Shadab’s dismissal, who scored a crucial 35-ball 48, had Afghanistan sniffing their first-ever victory over Pakistan in ODIs but Pakistan’s tailenders Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf displayed the nerves of steel to devoid the hosts of creating history as Pakistan sealed the victory on the penultimate delivery.

Naseem Shah scored an unbeaten 10 off five deliveries, hitting two boundaries, while Haris Rauf scored three crucial runs.

Chasing 301 in the second PAK vs AFG, Pakistan openers Fakhar Zaman (30) and Imam-ul-Haq provided a solid start with a 52-run partnership before Fazalhaq Farooqi dismissed the former in the ninth over.

Imam was then joined by Pakistan captain Babar Azam at the crease and the pair soon knitted an anchoring 118-run stand for the second wicket.

The pair appeared to have settled down before Babar miscued one off Farooqi in the 31st over, briefly after amassing his half-century. Babar scored 53 in 66 balls, laced with six boundaries.

Babar’s dismissal opened the floodgates as Pakistan lost four wickets in quick successions, including their mainstay Imam, to slip to 211/6 in the 39th over.

Imam remained the top-scorer for Pakistan with a calculated 105-ball 91 which featured four boundaries.

Following the slump, Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan stitched a cautious 47-run partnership and anchored the run chase until the former’s dismissal, who scored 17 off 24.

Opting to bat first in the second PAK vs AFG ODI, Afghanistan raised a commendable total of 300/5 at the back of Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s marathon 151-run knock.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz charged at Pakistani bowlers, while Ibrahim Zadran anchored through the innings, amid the frustration of Pakistani bowlers, who bowled Afghanistan inside 20 overs in the last match at a paltry total of 59.

Afghanistan openers knitted a brilliant 227-run opening stand, which is the second-highest opening stand against Pakistan in ODI cricket. Rahmanullah Gurbaz reached his fifth ODI hundred during the partnership before it was broken by Usama Mir.

Ibrahim Zadran departed after scoring 101-ball 80 runs, featuring six boundaries and two sixes.

Meanwhile, Rahmanullah Gurbaz continued the onslaught and reached the 150-run mark before being caught behind off Shaheen Afridi. His brilliant 151 runs innings featured 14 boundaries and three sixes.

Pakistani bowlers did a remarkable job in the death overs to restrict Afghanistan to 300 in the allocated 50 overs.

Shaheen Afridi picked up two wickets, while Usama Mir and Naseem Shah contributed with a wicket each.

Imam-ul-Haq rises in ICC ODI Batting Rankings

DUBAI: Pakistan’s left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq jumped a spot to claim the third position in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s ODI Batting Rankings.

Imam-ul-Haq, who scored a fighting half-century in the first ODI of the three-match series against Afghanistan got the reward of his sensible knock as he received a promotion in the batting rankings.

The left-handed opener scored a gutsy 61 off 94 deliveries with the help of two boundaries.

For his anchoring performance, Imam improved seven rating points and moved 11 clear of the third-ranked batter Shubman Gill.

Meanwhile, it was a contrasting outcome for the other Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman, who slipped two spots to fifth in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings.

Notably, Fakhar could score a mere two runs in the aforementioned match and consequently dropped 15 rating points.

Fakhar’s demotion paved the way for his opening partner Imam-ul-Haq and India’s Gill to climb up.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s all-format captain Babar Azam continued his hold on the supreme position but lost six rating points after falling for a three-ball duck in the first ODI against Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s star with the ball, Haris Rauf, who claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in the format, jumped seven places to 36th in the ODI Bowling Rankings while Afghanistan’s Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s 3/33 propelled him to earn the third rank.

It is worth mentioning here that Pakistan kicked off their preparations for the Asia Cup and ICC Men’s World Cup in India with a dominating 142-run victory over Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Opting to bat first, Pakistan could raise a modest 201 despite Imam-ul-Haq’s fighting half-century as Afghanistan spinners dominated the first half.

Besides Imam, Shadab Khan (39) and Iftikhar Ahmed (30) made notable contributions.

Set to chase 202, the Afghanistan batting lineup failed completely against a ruthless pace-packed Pakistan bowling attack.

Haris Rauf spearheaded Pakistan’s bowling charge as they booked Afghanistan for a paltry 59, steering their side to a statement victory.

For his bowling exploits, Haris Rauf was adjudged the Player of the Match.
