Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq announces retirement from tennis

Pakistan’s tennis ace Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi has called time on his professional career, bringing down the curtain on a journey spanning over two decades.

The 45-year-old announced his retirement during the inaugural ATP Challenger Cup in Islamabad.

On this occasion, Aisam reflected on his early days and lauded his family for their unwavering support during his career.

“My parents were my real strength. Their belief, sacrifices , and constant encouragement shaped me into the player I became,” he said.

He also shared a touching memory about his longtime coach Haseeb Aslam, revealing that he had initially refused to train him, but later agreed at the insistence of Aisam’s mother.

He expressed deep gratitude to all his coaches, mentors, fellow players, and the Pakistan sports media for standing by him throughout his career.

The ceremony also featured the formal introduction of both international and local tennis players, who will be participating in the ATP Challenger Islamabad tournament, making it a historic day for tennis in Pakistan.

Aisam-ul-Haq’s retirement marks the end of an era in Pakistan tennis history, as he leaves behind a legacy of international success, inspiration for young players, and immense contribution to the sport’s growth in the country.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi vows support for tennis in meeting with Aisam-ul-Haq

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi met with Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) President Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi on Wednesday to discuss the promotion of tennis across the country.

During the meeting, Aisam highlighted the ongoing issues related to tennis courts in Islamabad. Responding to the concerns, Mohsin Naqvi immediately directed relevant authorities to address the problems and ensure timely resolutions.

Expressing his commitment to supporting all sports, Naqvi assured the PTF of PCB’s full cooperation in promoting tennis.

“We will also build new tennis courts,” he said, adding that Pakistan is brimming with talent not only in cricket but also in tennis.

Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the importance of nurturing young talent across various formats.

“We want Pakistani players to shine in tennis just like they do in cricket,” he stated.

He also noted the growing popularity of padel tennis among the youth, promising the federation full backing to capitalize on emerging opportunities.

“PTF will have our complete support to help young players benefit from the rise of padel tennis,” he said.

Aisam-ul-Haq, meanwhile, congratulated Mohsin Naqvi on the successful hosting of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and lauded his efforts to promote cricket in the country.

He also expressed his gratitude to the PCB Chairman for taking steps to resolve tennis infrastructure issues and for pledging to construct new courts.

It’s worth noting that PCB Chief Operating Officer Sumair Ahmed was also present during the meeting.

Pakistan to host Asian U16 Tennis Championship Qualifiers next year

The Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) on Tuesday, announced to have successfully secured the hosting rights of the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) U16 Championship Qualifying event, scheduled to be played next year.

“Asian Tennis Federation was requested by President PTF to give us hosting rights of next year’s Asian U16 Championship’s qualifying event. ATF has very kindly agreed to it,” announced PTF.

“This will be for the first time ever that such a multi country event will be hosted by us in Pakistan and will give a great opportunity to our U/16 tennis players to compete with leading Asian countries on our own courts,” it added.

The PTF further shared that their president Aisam-ul-Haq, since assuming the role, has been actively pursuing various initiatives to develop and boost the game of tennis in Pakistan.

During his recent trip to London, Aisam met the International Tennis Federation (ITF) President David Haggerty and ATF President Yuriy Polskiy in a bid to receive their support and approval for a number of projects.

As a result, the international tennis body not only gave its consent to let PTF hold four ITF events in Pakistan but will also provide a 50 per cent grant to ensure the events proceed smoothly.

Furthermore, the ITF has also agreed to give a subsidy to the PTF for constructing covered courts at the National Tennis Center in Islamabad.

In addition to that, the ATF will grant Pakistan to send one coach to their international coaches conference and will provide the opportunity to two young players to get one-month training in Kazakhstan.

President PTF Aisam-ul-Haq also briefed the ITF about the development activities of wheelchair Tennis in Pakistan. The international tennis body lauded the initiative and offered to provide coaches and staff for further development.

Aisam, Nedovyesov claim convincing first round win in US Open doubles

NEW YORK: Pakistan star Tennis player Aisam-ul-Haq and his Kazakhstan partner Aleksandr Nedovyesov on Friday sealed a resounding first-round victory 6-1, 7-5 in the Men’s doubles of the US Open 2022.

The Pak-Kazakh duo of Aisam and Nedovyesov displayed sheer dominance on their Argentine team consisting of Sebastian Baez and his compatriot partner Tomas Martin Echeverri.

In the first set of the match, Aisam and his compatriot pounded their Argentine opponents and pulled ahead with an early 1-0 lead by claiming the first set 6-1.

Baez and Echeverri ante their level up in the second set and gave tough competition to their opponents, who, however, held their nerves calm to edge past the formers in a tense second 7-5 and ran away with the victory.

Aisam and Nedovyesov will now take on Jean-Julien Rojer and Marcelo Arevalo in the second round of the Grand Slam on Friday.

Aisam-ul-Haq appointed as Goodwill Ambassador of Punjab government

LAHORE: Pakistan’s ace tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq has been appointed as Goodwill Ambassador of the Punjab government by the provincial Sports Minister Malik Taimoor Masood, here on Wednesday.

Masood met the tennis star and extended his full support to Aisam’s newly launched initiative for the grooming and coaching of young tennis players.

During the meeting, Masood said that the provincial government would completely patronize Aisam’s Ace tennis academy and announced a special tennis talent hunt programme in the province in collaboration with his initiative.

“Aisam is the pioneer of tennis in Pakistan,” he said. ” We are working to revive tennis in the country.”

Furthermore, he assured the tennis star to provide training space to Ace academy players at Punjab National Tennis Stadium’s adjacent courts.

Meanwhile, Aisam expressed his gratitude to the Punjab government for appointing him the Goodwill Ambassador.

It is pertinent to mention here that the 42-year-old tennis player had earlier launched a talent hunt programme for tennis with trials held in four major cities across Pakistan: Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Karachi.

Aisam set ups talent hunt, laments govt’s lack of support for Tennis

LAHORE: Pakistan’s ace tennis player Aisam-ul-Haq lamented no support from the government and federation for the betterment of the game in the country as he launched the Talent Hunt Program to groom the young players with the trials set to kick off tomorrow. 

Speaking at a press conference here on Thursday, the tennis star claimed that the country lacked a proper system that could produce quality tennis players and announced that his initiative would provide mentorship and assistance to the 16 young emerging players of the country to compete at the international level.

“We used to hear the same thing everywhere. Why is it that no player from the country emerges except for me and Aqeel Khan?” he said.

“In Pakistan, we don’t have such a system in place for tennis. When our players compete at the international level, they do not have that level of fitness.” he asserted

The national tennis player stated that they had hired the services of professional trainers and coaches for the best grooming of the young talent through the programme and would also help those players in finding sponsorships for their future endeavours.

The programme, which is set to begin on August 5, will be held in four major cities across Pakistan: Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Karachi.

Approximately 400 tennis players will participate in trials in 4 cities and 16 selected players will be given complete training through professional physical trainers and tennis coaches for one year under the supervision of national tennis star Aisam.

“Right now we have very limited funds available. We will definitely launch the talent hunt in other parts of the country when we get more funding” he added.

Furthermore, the 42-year-old tennis player urged the Tennis federation and the government to support his initiative as he aimed to produce more tennis stars for the country.

Aisam, Alexander reach ATP World Ranking Championship Quarterfinal

SYDNEY: Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq alongside his partner Alexandar Nedovyesov beat the Holland/El Salvador team of Rojer Jean Julien and Marcelo Arevalo to reach the quarterfinal of the ATP World Ranking Tennis Championship.

In a fiercely contested match, Aisam’s team edged past the opposition by the scores of 7-6, 6-4; securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the ongoing championship.

Taking to Twitter, the tennis star expressed his excitement and gratitude following a remarkable victory.

Earlier Aisam’s team also defeated the Anglo/Finish pair of Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara 6-7,6-3,10-7 in the first round.
