Andre Russell’s sparkling farewell in vain as Australia sprint to T20I win

JAMAICA: Andre Russell struck a sparkling 36 off 15 balls in his final innings before retirement on Tuesday, but could not save the West Indies from losing the second T20I against Australia.

The 37-year-old all-rounder was unable to script a fairytale farewell to his glittering T20 career, but departed to a standing ovation on his home Sabina Park ground after hitting four trademark sixes and two fours.

Batting at number seven in his 85th and last T20 international, Russell’s cameo, plus a late flurry from Gudakesh Motie (18 off nine balls), added to 51 from opener Brandon King, enabled the hosts to score 172-8 off their 20 overs.

But a record 131-run stand by Josh Inglis, who made 78 not out, and Cameron Green (56 not out) saw Australia race to an eight-wicket win with more than four overs to spare.

It was the highest third-wicket partnership for Australia in T20Is and, aided by six dropped catches by West Indies fielders, gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Inglis hit seven fours and five sixes while Green was barely more sedate, clearing the ropes four times and stroking three fours in his second consecutive fifty.

“I didn’t want to finish on a losing note,” said Russell, whose spectacular final knock had briefly thrilled his hometown crowd. “I enjoy seeing the ball go over the ropes.”

“As a kid, you dream about playing here. Thanks to all the fans who came out to support me.”

Andre Russell, who was given a guard of honour before the match by the West Indies and Australia players, played just one Test match.

It was as a Twenty20 specialist that he made his name, winning the T20 World Cup twice with the West Indies in 2012 and 2016.

A more than lively seam bowler, Russell’s free-scoring late-order batting and athletic fielding saw him sought after by T20 leagues around the world.

He has been with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL since 2014, scoring more than 2,400 runs.

Andre Russell reflects on career highlight ahead of retirement

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has revealed the best moment of his international cricket career ahead of his retirement next week.

The 37-year-old, who will retire after the first two T20Is against Australia on July 20 and 22 at Sabina Park in Kingston, looked back on his defining performances during an interview with Cricket West Indies (CWI).

Russell, who has represented the Caribbean side in 84 T20Is, has been a white-ball specialist since 2019.

Reflecting on his journey, Russell recalled his crucial knock against India in the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 in Mumbai as the highlight of his career.

Coming in at No. 5 during a daunting chase of 193, Russell smashed an unbeaten 43 off 20 balls, sealing the win by hitting Virat Kohli for six with two balls to spare.

“Definitely [my best moment was] the 2016 World Cup, that semi-final game against India where I brought the team home, me and Lendl Simmons, and obviously the start that we got from the other batters,” he said.

Andre Russell described the pressure of playing against a home crowd in India, but credited the team’s confidence and depth for allowing him to play with freedom.

“Chasing 190-plus in that semi-final in India, with the crowd supporting India only, that was already a bit of pressure,” he said.

“But the wicket was very good, so the confidence we had in the changing room and the batters that were left to come gave me the freedom and the confidence to play the role that I did.”

West Indies went on to win the final against England in Kolkata, securing their second T20 World Cup title in four years. Russell, who was part of both triumphs, said those memories will remain etched in his heart.

“Obviously, two World Cups, it’s just a different emotion,” he said.

“You sleep, you wake up [after the final], and you realise you’ve only been sleeping for two hours, but you feel well-rested because you just want to see what’s going on on the internet… all of those memories and good comments.”

Speaking about playing his final games at home, Russell said ending his career at Sabina Park makes it even more special.

“It’s a pretty good feeling,” he said.

“I think, [from the] first time I came to Sabina Park as a kid, and then to actually walk on the grass and feel the atmosphere and look in the stands and everything, and [to] now, I’ve achieved so much out of cricket for the last couple of years. I did my best every chance I got, representing the West Indies.

“I think it’s the perfect ground and the perfect series, against a good team as well, Australia, to end my international career.

“Seeing the posts and stuff going around on the internet, I get a bit emotional, to be honest. But the decision is already made, and I think I’ve done well enough to actually say, yes, that’s it for me towards international cricket.”

Andre Russell to follow Nicholas Pooran, set to retire from International cricket

West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell is set to follow Nicolas Pooran’s footsteps in retiring from International cricket during the T20I series against Australia.

A month earlier, former West Indies white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran had stunned cricket fans around the world as he announced his retirement from international cricket at just 29 years of age.

The left-handed batter, who had become a vital part of the West Indies’ limited-overs setup, brought the curtain down on an international career spanning eight years.

Now, the 37-year-old Russell, who has been named in the West Indies squad for the five-match series against Australia set to commence on 20 July at Sabina Park is also in line to bid farewell to international cricket.

According to Cricinfo, the opening two games of the series at Andre Russell’s home ground will be his farewell matches. The all-rounder known for his explosive batting has 84 T20I caps to his name and has only featured in the shorter format for the West Indies since 2019.

Andre Russell, hailing from Jamaica, is the second high-profile West Indies player after Nicholas Pooran to hang up his boots in international cricket in less than two months.

Andre Russel was a vital cog of the West Indies squads that won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016.

Following the squad announcement for the series against Australia, head coach Daren Sammy expressed confidence ahead of the 2026 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka.

“Our goals and strategic plans are aligned to winning the T20 World Cup in 2026,” he said.

“We have continuity in the squad from the previous series and as a unit we will continue to fine tune our style and brand ahead of the World Cup,” he added.

Sammy mentioned previous series results while stressing on the momentum for the next few months.

“Our previous two T20 series at home we were on the wrong end of the results but starting against Australia, we want to regain our form at home as we build momentum into next year’s World Cup with our exciting and dynamic group of players,” he concluded.

West Indies recall star players for T20I series against England, Ireland

West Indies will take on England in a three-match T20I series, which follows the conclusion of their ongoing ODI series at The Oval on Tuesday.

The squad then shifts focus to a three-match T20I tour of Ireland, although several senior players and key coaching staff will be rested for that leg, including Russell, who will sit out the Ireland series.

This series marks a fresh chapter for the West Indies in the shortest format, with Shai Hope set to lead the T20I side for the first time, replacing Rovman Powell as captain.

Holder, who last featured in a T20I for West Indies in February 2024, returns after missing the World Cup due to injury.

Russell also makes his comeback after suffering an ankle injury during the West Indies’ home series against England last year.

The squad sees the return of Sherfane Rutherford, who missed the Bangladesh series, while Keacy Carty has been selected for the Ireland leg only, replacing Brandon King, who has been granted leave.

Additionally, newly appointed Test captain Roston Chase will depart after the England series to begin preparations for the upcoming Test tour of Australia. His absence opens the door for batter Jyd Goolie, who earns his maiden senior call-up for the Ireland series.

With a Test camp scheduled from June 13-21 in Barbados, the coaching staff — head coach Daren Sammy, Floyd Reifer, and Ravi Rampaul — will return early, with Rayon Griffith stepping in as interim coach for the Ireland leg.

T20 World Cup 2024: Akeal Hosein takes five as West Indies decimate Uganda

GUYANA: Akeal Hosein claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in T20Is to steer West Indies to a crushing 134-run victory over Uganda in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 here at Providence Stadium on Saturday.

Set to chase 174, Uganda, who are participating in the T20 World Cup for the first time, posed no threat to West Indies and bowled out for a meagre 39 in 12 overs.

Roger Mukasa bagged his third consecutive duck after Hosein got him out on the second ball of the innings.

Hosein dismissed Alpesh Ramjani and Riazat Ali Shah in consecutive overs to claim three wickets in his three overs.

He castled Dinesh Nakrani, followed by the wicket of Kenneth Waiswa in his last over to get his T20I career’s first five-wicket haul.

Uganda’s Juma Miyagi was the only batter to reach the double figures as he scored an unbeaten 13 off 20.

Alzarri Joseph bowled Frank Nsubuga to finish the match on the last ball of the 12th over.

Hosein returned with figures of 5-11, while Joseph bagged two wickets.

Earlier, West Indies opted to bat and got off to a flying start courtesy of a 41-run opening stand between Brandon King (13) and Johnson Charles.

Alpesh Ramjani broke the partnership by dismissing King, however, Charles kept the scoreboard moving.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Pooran smashed three sixes during his 17-ball 22 before Uganda skipper Brian Masaba sent him back.

Charles played a cautious innings, scoring 44 off 42 with the help of six boundaries, including two sixes.

Rovman Powell (23), and Sherfane Rutherford (22) made valuable contributions to push the team’s total to 140 in 17.3 overs.

Russell and Sherfane Rutherford (5) then made an unbeaten 33-run partnership to help West Indies score 173-5 in their allocated 20 overs. Russell scored a 17-ball 30, laced with six boundaries.

For Uganda, Masaba led the bowling with two wickets, while Ramjani, Cosmas Kyewuta and Dinesh Nakrani bagged one apiece.

Shane Watson believes Wasim Jr. can play Andre Russell-like role for Pakistan

Quetta Gladiators’ head coach Shane Watson heaped high praise on all-rounder Mohammad Wasim Jr, who led the Gladiators to a thrilling victory over Lahore Qalandars during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

Wasim Jr smashed a last-ball six against Shaheen Afridi to muscle Quetta Gladiators into the PSL 9 playoffs.

The enthralling victory led Quetta Gladiators into their first PSL playoffs since winning the title in 2019.

Watson, while talking to the media after the match, appreciated Wasim for his all-round prowess and power-hitting abilities.

“We’ve been talking to Mohammad Wasim Jr since the first game about being as still as possible,” said the Gladiators head coach.

“He’s got amazing hand-eye coordination and power, so he just needs to stand still and trust that he can smash it,” he added.

Shane Watson expressed hope that Wasim can play the role of a power-hitting all-rounder for Pakistan, like West Indies’ Andre Russell.

“We’ve been talking to him about turning himself into the Pakistani Andre Russell with the skill and power he’s got with the bat,” said the former Australian all-rounder.

“We already know what he’s got with the ball, and he’s got amazing athleticism which we’ve seen in the field,” Watson concluded.

Quetta Gladiators joined Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United in the final four while the Qualifier and Eliminator ties will be decided after the completion of the group stage matches.

Andre Russell shines on comeback as West Indies sink England in first T20I

BRIDGETOWN: Veteran all-rounder Andre Russell made a dazzling return to international cricket to help West Indies cruise to a four-wicket victory over England in the opening T20I on Tuesday.

Handed a shock recall after a two-year absence, Andre Russell shone with bat and ball at Kensington Oval as the home side reached the victory target with ease to finish at 172-6 from 18.1 overs.

The 35-year-old Russell was the pick of the West Indies bowlers with three wickets for 19 runs off four overs as world champions England were all out for 171.

Russell, alongside skipper Rovman Powell, who was unbeaten on 31, then produced a quick-fire 29 not out to see West Indies home after a mid-innings wobble threatened to allow England back into the contest.

Russell’s innings off just 14 balls included two fours and two sixes, including a monstrous six out of the ground over midwicket off Adil Rashid.

West Indies blasted 14 sixes throughout the innings, including two huge swipes from opener Kyle Mayers early on which also flew out of the ground.

Russell later slashed a sublime shot over backward point off Sam Curran for four runs to seal victory and a superb individual performance.

“Life is so funny,” man-of-the-match Russell said.

“Since when I got selected for the West Indies team I’ve been dreaming for two weeks now — and I was dreaming of being man of the match.”

England skipper Jos Buttler was left to rue the tourists’ inability to cash in on a strong start to their innings which included a 77-run opening partnership.

“From the position we were in, we were looking for a score of 200,” said Buttler, who scored 39 while fellow opener Phil Salt put on a stylish 40 off 20 balls.

“We want to keep pushing the boundaries and trying to be as positive as we can.

“But it’s about finding ways to keep scoring in that manner, getting those extra 20, 25 runs in an unfashionable way.”

The second game of the series takes place in Grenada on Thursday.

Andre Russell to miss today’s contest against Peshawar Zalmi

ABU DHABI: West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell is ruled out from today’s 19th contest of Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 6 between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi.
Gladiators, who are already in a do-or-die situation in the tournament, will be suffering from this blow today against Zalmi. Russell was hit by Musa Khan’s bouncer on his jaws during yesterday’s match.
The cricketer was replaced by young Naseem Shah as a concussion replacement last night.
It must be noted here that Gladiators are at last position on the pints table with just a win in six matches. Now, they have to win all of their next four matches in order to remain in the race of playoffs.
