Pakistan thump China to qualify for Asian Champions Trophy semi-final

HULUNBUIR CITY: Pakistan qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing Asian Hockey Champions Trophy 2024 after thumping China 5-1 at the Moqi Hockey Training Base here on Thursday.

Abdul Rehman opened the scoring for Pakistan before Nadeem Ahmed and Hannan Shahid scored two goals each to secure a dominant 5-1 victory for the Green Shirts.

This is Pakistan’s second consecutive victory in the tournament as they defeated Japan 2-1 yesterday after two drawn games.

Ahmad Nadeem opened the scoring against Japan in the ninth minute after finding Shahid Hannan and sending the ball to the back of the net. Sufyan Khan soon doubled Pakistan’s lead in the 21st minute with a sublime drag flick.

However, Raiki Fujishima helped Japan make a subtle comeback six minutes later and reduced the deficit.

Japan made efforts to level the scores, but the Green Shirts’ dominant gameplay maintained their lead until the final hooter.

Prior to this game, Pakistan’s second fixture in the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy ended in a 2-2 draw as they failed to defend their narrow one-goal lead in the final quarter against South Korea.

South Korea opened the scoring in the dying minutes of the second quarter, courtesy of Hyun Jigwang. Their lead remained intact until the third quarter and it appeared that Pakistan were closing in on their first defeat in the ongoing tournament.

The national team, however, made an astounding comeback as Shahid Hanan scored back-to-back last-minute goals to give the Green Shirts what appeared to be a decisive lead.

But just a few seconds before the final whistle, South Korea equalized through Kim Sunghyun and denied Pakistan a victory.

Pakistan tasted the same fortune in their Asian Hockey Champions Trophy opener against Malaysia. They started their campaign with a 2-2 draw despite dominating the majority of the match.

The Green Shirts started the game strongly, taking the lead in the second quarter, thanks to a goal by Sufyan Khan.

In the third quarter, Nadeem Ahmed extended their lead with another goal, before Malaysia made a comeback with a goal from the penalty corner.

Pakistan were cruising towards victory with a 2-1 lead, however, Aiman Rozemi’s late goal helped Malaysia level the scores in the dying minutes of the game.

Pakistan thrash China to finish fifth in Asian Champions Trophy

CHENNAI: Pakistan hockey team concluded their Asian Hockey Champions Trophy journey at fifth position after handing China a thumping 6-1 defeat on Friday.

The Green Shirts started the game on high as they quickly took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter.

Although, China, showed some grit and managed to score their solitary goal in the third quarter but the green-shirts eventually pulled them back and scored two more goals to hand them a heavy defeat by a margin of five goals.

Pakistan’s Mohammad Ammad and Mohammad Sufyan both scored two goals each, while Hanan Shahid and Abdul Rana each scored one goal.

China’s Benhai Chen scored the only goal of the match in the 35th minute through a penalty corner.

This was the first time that the Green Shirts failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy since its inception in 2011.

Pakistan’s only victory in the Asian Champions Trophy came against China, which finished at the bottom of the table with one point only.

Prior to that game, Pakistan was winless in the Asian Champions Trophy, as they drew against Japan (3-3), and defending champions South Korea (1-1), while, they were handed a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Malaysia in their first game.

South Korea will face Malaysia in the first semi-final today, meanwhile, India will face Japan in the second semi-final on the same day.

CHENNAI: Pakistan were knocked out of the Asian Champions Trophy, after facing a daunting 0-4 defeat at the hands of arch-rivals India on Wednesday.

Pakistan ended up with the same points as Japan and South Korea, however, it failed to qualify due to goal difference, as the other two teams progressed to the next round.

The green shirts failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy for the first time since its inception in 2011.

Pakistan started the game on a high with some great groundwork, however, Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh gave his team the lead with a goal just before the end of the first quarter.

India never looked back after that, as they dominated the second quarter and improved their lead with another goal by Harmanpreet Singh off a penalty corner.

Indian team kept challenging Pakistan’s defence and bore fruits as Jugraj Singh and Akashdeep Singh scored one goal each to finish the game at 4-0.

This loss extended Pakistan’s winless streak against India to 16 games, as they last won against arch-rivals back in 2016 in South Asian games.

Pakistan’s only victory in the Asian Champions Trophy came against China in the last game, which finished at the bottom of the table with one point only.

Pakistan reach Dhaka for Asian Champions Trophy

DHAKA: Pakistan hockey squad reached here on Saturday to participate in the Asian Hockey Champions Trophy, scheduled from December 14 to 22. 

According to the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), the team has reached here followed by the arrival of goalkeepers Waqar and Abdullah Ishtiaq. Visas for Amjad Ali and Mazhar Abbas are expected by Sunday evening as per informed by the PHF.

The Asian Champions Trophy features six of the best teams in Asia, including the joint defending champions Pakistan and India, Korea, Japan, Malaysia and host Bangladesh.

Pakistan will face Japan in the Asian Champions Trophy on December 14 while joint defending champions Pakistan and India will compete on December 17.

PHF announces 26-member training camp for Asian Champions Trophy

Lahore: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced a 26-member training camp for Asian Champions Trophy, head coach Olympian Khawaja Junaid has been appointed as camp commandant.

The camp will start on October 21 at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore. Asian Champions Trophy will take place in Dhaka, Bangladesh from December 14 to 22.

The players in the camp have been instructed to report to the camp commandant and head coach National Hockey Team Olympian Khawaja Junaid on October 21 along with their departmental NOC, six-month valid passport, 12 passport size photographs.
