Novak Djokovic reclaims top ranking after French Open triumph

LONDON: History-maker Novak Djokovic on Monday, reclaimed the top spot in the ATP Rankings after his historic French Open victory which took him to 23 Grand Slam titles.

Novak Djokovic, fresh from his French Open victory, pipped both Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev to be back on the hill.

The Serb will enjoy his 388th week as the top-ranked player after his French Open victory saw him past Rafael Nadal as the leading Grand Slam titles (23).

Novak Djokovic put himself in a position to reclaim the top spot by defeating Alcaraz in the French Open semi-finals. The 36-year-old then sealed his return by defeating Casper Ruud in the final.

It will be Novak Djokovic’s third stint at World No. 1 this year and the second time in 2023 he has climbed to No. 1 by winning a major. He has won both the Australian Open and Fench Open and returned to the top of the men’s Tennis mountain each time.

In February, Novak Djokovic broke Stefanie Graf’s record for most weeks at World No. 1 by a men’s or women’s tennis player (then 377 weeks). Only one other man, Roger Federer (310 weeks), has spent more than 300 weeks as World No. 1.

The 36-year-old Djokovic will now charge towards 400 weeks, which he can reach in September.

Meanwhile, another favourite contender for the French Open title Carlos Alcaraz slipped a spot to second after his semi-final defeat against Djokovic.

The Spaniard suffered a frustrating injury in the era-defining match and was far away from his absolute best against ruthless Djokovic.

Daniil Medvedev also saw a dip in his ranking after an early exit from French Open, going down to third, while Casper Ruud despite losing in the final retained his fourth position.

Ruud defended his points from a year ago, therefore there has been no change in his ranking.

Apart from Karen Khachanov, who switched places with Felix Auger-Aliassime in the 10th position, there are no other movers in the top 10.

Djokovic has a 380-point lead over Alcaraz, with Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in third, more than 1,000pts behind the leading duo.

Djokovic extends record stay as world number one

PARIS: Novak Djokovic extended his record of weeks as world number one to 379 in the latest ATP rankings released on Monday, although Carlos Alcaraz remains in hot pursuit.

The 35-year-old winner of 22 Grand Slam titles edged ahead of Steffi Graf’s all-time record last week despite losing in the Dubai semi-finals to Daniil Medvedev.

The Russian ended Djokovic’s 20-match win streak and perfect start to 2023 before claiming his third title in as many weeks with defeat of compatriot Andrey Rublev in Dubai.

He moved up a place to sixth.

Second-ranked Alcaraz will take over at the ATP summit if he wins the Indian Wells Masters — Djokovic was forced to withdraw from the event starting this week on Sunday.

The Serb is unable to enter the United States because he is unvaccinated against Covid-19. A petition to US authorities for special permission to enter was rejected.

Medvedev retains top spot as Washington winner Kyrgios climbs to 37

LONDON: Daniil Medvedev, who won his first tournament of the year at the weekend, retained his position at the top of the ATP rankings published on Monday while Nick Kyrgios climbed to his highest rank in two and half years.

Medvedev, who is over 1,000 points clear of the injured Alexander Zverev, won his first title since claiming the US Open almost a year ago when he roared past defending champion Cameron Norrie in the final of the hardcourt tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Medvedev snapped a five-match losing streak in finals — a stretch that included his agonising five-set loss to Rafael Nadal in the Australian Open final in February.

He also came up short this year in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Halle. He did not get a chance at Wimbledon, where Russian and Belarussian players were banned because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In spite of losing his title, Norrie still moved up a place to 11 with the Pole Hubert Hurkacz nudging up to 10.

The man on the slide, down two places, is Jannik Sinner, who chose to skip the event in Washington, losing the points he gained last year when he won it.

Sinner’s absence left the door open for Australian Nick Kyrgios who followed his journey to the Wimbledon final with his first title in three years.

The Australian climbs 26 places to 37th, his best ranking since February 2020.

Alcaraz becomes youngest player in ATP top 5 since Nadal

LONDON: Carlos Alcaraz was confirmed on Monday as the youngest player to break into the ATP top five since Rafael Nadal after the teenager reached the Hamburg final over the weekend.

The 19-year-old Spaniard is the youngest man to achieve the feat since his illustrious compatriot first climbed into the top five in 2005 while still 18.

Alcaraz failed to win the clay-court title in Germany, though, losing to Italian youngster Lorenzo Musetti on Sunday despite saving five match points.

Musetti rose 31 places to 31st in the rankings and is now set to be seeded for the US Open, which starts on August 29.

Daniil Medvedev remains the world number one, with Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic seventh after the grass-court Grand Slam tournament was stripped of ranking points for banning Russian and Belarusian players.

Daniil Medvedev replaces Novak Djokovic as the World No.1 Tennis player

KARACHI: Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has replaced his Serbian counterpart, Novak Djokovic, as the top-ranked Tennis player in the latest ATP Rankings, here on Monday.

Medvedev, who is set to miss the upcoming Wimbledon following its decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players will further increase his lead over the former top-ranked player Djokovic.

Following Wimbledon’s decision to ban the Russian and Belarusian players, the ranking points have been stripped of the mega event.

The defending champion – Serbia’s Djokovic is bound to lose more ranking points (2,000) as compared to Medvedev, who only stands to lose 180 points.

The Serb has slipped to the third position in the latest ATP Rankings, while Germany’s Alexander Zverev claimed the second.

It is the first instance since November 2003 that none of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Andy Murray appeared in the top-two ranking spots.

Rafael Nadal rises in the latest ATP Rankings after French Open triumph

LONDON: The Spaniard Rafael Nadal, who outclassed Norway’s Casper Ruud in the French Open final 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 to lift the 14th Roland Garros and record-extending 22nd Grand Slam trophy last week, moved up in the latest ATP Rankings.

The Spaniard climbed a place up in the rankings to claim the fourth rank following an incredible season. He has now levelled with his countryman Carlos Alcaraz – winning four titles in 2022.

The 36-years-old Spaniard is the oldest champion in the history of the clay-court event and it is also the first instance Nadal won the Australian and French Open in the same year.

The French Open 2022 Runner-up Ruud, on the other hand, also improved his rankings as he moved two places up to claim his career-high sixth spot.

Ruud, who became the first Norwegian to reach the final at a Grand Slam, enjoyed a prolific French Open campaign as he defeated Lorenzo Sonego, Hubert Hurcakz, and Marin Cilic on his way to the final before losing to the eventual champion Nadal in a one-sided affair.
