Australia name 14-member squad for Pakistan ODIs

MELBOURNE: Cricket Australia (CA) on Monday, announced a 14-member squad for the three-match home ODI series against Pakistan.

The reigning world champions will be without Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh as both key players will be on paternity leave.

The duo has been replaced by Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short, who are likely to open the innings together.

Furthermore, all-rounder Cameron Green has been sidelined from Australia’s 14-member squad for the ODI series against Pakistan as he is set to undergo a back injury.

However, Pat Cummins, who was absent from Australia’s recent white-ball tours to England and Scotland, has returned to the side and will captain the world champions for the first time since leading them to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 glory.

Furthermore, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has also been recalled to the squad after being left out of the away series against England. Rising youngsters Cooper Connolly and Aaron Hardie have also been named in the squad.

Australia’s chief selector George Bailey termed the upcoming series “crucial” for the preparation of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan in February-March next year.

“This is our last ODI series before the Champions Trophy, and the balance of the squad was focused on that, as well as preparing individuals for the upcoming Test summer,” said Bailey.

The highly-anticipated series between Pakistan and Australia will get underway on November 4 with the first ODI scheduled to be played in Melbourne. The remaining two ODIs will be played on November 8 and 10 in Adelaide and Perth.

Teenage quick on standby as Australia announce squad for England ODIs

Mahli Beardman, a 19-year-old paceman with just six overs in senior professional cricket behind him, has been put on standby as Australia unveiled squad for this month’s one-day international series away to England.

Beardman was named player of the match after taking 3-15 in just seven overs as Australia thrashed India by 79 runs in February’s Under-19 World Cup final in South Africa.

But he has played just one List A (limited-overs) game for Western Australia, finishing with figures of 1-42 against New South Wales in the Marsh Cup last November.

Mahli Beardman will now join the Australia squad in Nottingham as the 50-over world champions prepare for the first of a five-game ODI series against England at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

Australia have already seen injuries blight their pace attack during the T20 leg of their tour, with Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith and Xavier Bartlett all affected, and they are also wary of adding too much to the workload of senior fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

Left-armer Ben Dwarshuis, who has already played for Durham and Northern Superchargers in English domestic cricket this season, and Cooper Connolly, who had been due to leave after the drawn T20 series with England, have also been added to Australia’s ODI squad.

Australia add two reserves in T20 World Cup 2024 squad

Cricket Australia (CA) on Tuesday, confirmed the addition of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short as the travelling reserves to their preliminary squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to commence on June 1.

Explosive batter Fraser-McGurk and all-rounder Short earned a late ticket to this year’s mega event as reserves, meaning there is still no spot for Steve Smith, Jason Behrendorff and Tanveer Sangha.

Fraser-McGurk enjoyed an astounding Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign with Delhi Capitals as he smashed 330 runs in just nine appearances.

His purple patch was close to taking him to the T20 World Cup 2024 but the likes of David Warner, Travis Head and Mitch Marsh saw him missing out.

Similarly, Short, who has been the standout opening batter in the Big Bash League (BBL), can also bat down the order and offer a solid off-spin bowling option, but narrowly missed out on making it to Australia’s Final 15.

“You look at Jake’s form in the IPL – he took that by storm and he was a serious consideration for the final 15,” coach Andrew McDonald told cricket.com.au.

“And so was Matthew Short. His BBL form has been outstanding over a long period of time and he’s shown glimpses at the international level as well, albeit at times he’s had to play a different role.

“When you’re on the fringes potentially you’re going to have to play different roles at different times and he’s really embraced some middle-order opportunities.

“We know that he’s best suited at the top of the order – and it’s probably similar for Jake as well – hence why they haven’t been picked in the initial 15.

“But should anything move, we feel as though both of them could have the flexibility to line up anywhere in that batting order.”

Notably, Jason Sangha was in contention to be considered for the travelling reserve spots but suffered a hip injury while training in Brisbane last week.

Australia squad: Mitchell Marsh (c), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa

Travelling Reserves: Jake Fraser-McGurk, Matt Short

Matthew Wade to captain Australia on India T20I tour

Veteran wicketkeeper Matthew Wade will captain Australia in their Twenty20 International series against India next month with a host of senior players giving the tour a miss, selectors said Saturday.

Wade was elevated to the top job with regular captain Mitchell Marsh returning to Australia after the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 in India to prepare for the home Test summer.

Test and one-day skipper Pat Cummins along with pace partners Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are also being rested, as is allrounder Cameron Green.

Spinner Ashton Agar was not considered due to injury.

But batting stalwarts Steve Smith and David Warner were among the 15-man squad for the five-game series starting on November 23 in Vishakhapatnam.

“It’s an experienced squad with a mixture of players who have had their first opportunity on the international stage and that we hope will continue to develop into important players in our T20 group,” said chief selector George Bailey.

“Matthew has captained the team previously, is a leader in the group and we look forward to him taking the reins for this series.”

Labuschagne replaces Agar as Australia confirm ICC World Cup 2023 squad

Right-arm batter Marnus Labuschagne replaced Ashton Agar in Australia’s final squad for the ICC World Cup 2023, commencing on October 5.

According to the details, Agar failed to recover from a calf injury, which kept him out of the T20I series against South Africa.

His last appearance for Australia, however, came earlier this month when he featured in the five-match ODI series against South Africa.

Consequently, Marnus Labuschagne, who was initially left out of Australia’s squad, replaced Ashton Agar for the ICC World Cup 2023.

Agar’s exclusion meant Australia will enter the mega event with just one specialist spinner Adam Zampa while veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, would likely be given a role to strengthen their spin bowling department.

Australia finalized their squad on Thursday for the ICC World Cup 2023, delaying this alteration until the very last minute.

For the unversed, all the 10 participating teams were bound to submit their final squad to the International Cricket Council (ICC) by September 28 and any tweaks to that after the cut-off date needed approval from the apex cricket body.

Meanwhile, Australia named injured Travis Head in their final ICC World Cup 2023 squad, who is anticipated to make a mid-tournament return.

Head fractured his hand during Australia’s 164-run thrashing at the hands of South Africa in the fourth ODI of the recently-held five-match series.

The five-time champions Australia will take on Netherlands on September 30 and Pakistan on October 3 in their warm-up fixtures before starting their World Cup campaign against hosts India on October 8 in Chennai.

Cummins, Warner return as Australia name WTC final and Ashes squad

Australia have included veteran David Warner along with two possible opening backups in the squad for the ICC World Test Championship final against India and the opening two Ashes Tests.

Cricket Australia on Wednesday announced the 17-member touring party for the WTC decider from June 7 at the Oval and the first two matches of the Ashes.

Pat Cummmin will return as Australian captain after missing the last two Tests in India to spend time with his ailing mother.

Similarly, Warner will also make his comeback after recovering from an elbow injury sustained during the India tour in February, though two other left-handed openers – Matthew Renshaw and Marcus Harris – have been named as possible options to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the order.

However, the squad for the WTC final against India needs to be cut down to 15 players by May 28.

The selectors will reassess their decision after the second Ashes Test at Lord’s and make changes, if needed, to the squad for the remaining three Tests at Headingley, Old Trafford and The Oval.

Among the players who were part of the Australian squad that toured India, l Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb, Mitchell Swepson and Matt Kuhnemann have not been retained.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and wicketkeeper Josh Inglis have been recalled for the upcoming assignment.

Squad: Pat Cummins (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith (vice-captain), Mitchell Starc, David Warner
