Bangladesh stun India ahead of Asia Cup 2023 final

COLOMBO: A combined bowling effort, followed by Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy’s half-centuries powered Bangladesh to a stunning six-run victory over India ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 final on Sunday.

Set to chase 266, India could accumulate 259 before being bundled out in the final over despite Shubman Gill’s century.

Gill waged a lone battle for India with a 133-ball 121 which featured eight boundaries and five sixes.

Besides him, Axar Patel, who kept India in the hunt until the penultimate, was the other notable run-getter for India with a gutsy 42-run knock, laced with three boundaries and two sixes.

Mustafizur Rahman led the bowling attack for Bangladesh in their farewell Asia Cup 2023 fixture with 3/50 while debutant Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mahedi Hasan bagged two each.

Put into bat first, Bangladesh put on a decent total on the board at the back of a combined effort, led by their skipper Shakib.

Bangladesh, however, had a contrasting start to their innings as the Indian pacers ran through their top order to leave them reeling at 28/3 in 5.4 overs.

Came out to bat at number five, skipper Shakib attempted to stabilize Bangladesh’s innings as he put together a brief partnership with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who fell after a scratchy 13-run knock.

Following the slump, Shakib Al Hasan finally found subtle support at the other end in the form of Towhid Hridoy and they soon launched an astounding recovery.

The pair put together 101 runs for the fifth wicket before Shardul Thakur castled Shakib in the 34th over.

He remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh in the last Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s match with an 85-ball 80 which featured six boundaries and three sixes.

Bangladesh were then rocked with another blow as Ravindra Jadeja trapped Shamim Hossain (1) trapped in his legs in the next over.

However, Towhid Hridoy stood his ground firm and kept the scoreboard ticking before finally perishing in the 42nd over, briefly after completing his half-century.

He scored a cautious 54 off 81 balls with the help of five boundaries and two sixes.

Nasum Ahmed then took the reigns of Bangladesh’s batting charge after Hridoy’s dismissal and frustrated the Indian bowlers at the backend.

Ahmed played a brisk 44-run knock which featured six boundaries and a six.

He was also involved in a crucial 45-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Mahedi Hasan, who scored 29 not out.

Shardul Thakur led the bowling attack for India in the last Asia Cup 2023 Super 4s fixture with 3/65, followed by Mohammed Shami’s 2/32.

Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Prasidh Krishna, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

Bangladesh bowlers rattle India to leave match hanging in the balance

DHAKA: Bangladesh fought their way into what earlier appeared a lost cause on Saturday, knocking over four Indian wickets to leave the visitors teetering after Liton Das compiled a gritty half-century on the third day of the second Test in Dhaka.

The Bangladesh bowlers were given 145 runs to defend after Liton’s steely 73 and a wagging tail steered the hosts to 231 all out.

Despite the subpar score, spinners Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan rose to the challenge, reducing India to 45-4 at stumps with 100 still left to chase, leaving the match unexpectedly hanging in the balance.

Mehidy claimed three wickets after Shakib’s initial breakthrough, removing Cheteshwar Pujara (six), Shubman Gill (seven) and Virat Kohli (one). Shakib started the slide with the wicket of captain KL Rahul for two.

Axar Patel survived the day to stay unbeaten on 26 alongside nightwatchman Jaydev Unadkat (three), with first-innings heroes Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer yet to come in.

Liton said after the close of play that Bangladesh could keep India under pressure and eke out a win with early wickets on Sunday.

“It is possible to win if we can take one or two more wickets in the early morning,” he said.

“Rishabh and Iyer are yet to come, they are of course good players, but as I said if we can take one or two more wickets they will remain under pressure.”

For India, building a partnership remains vital.

“I feel we should not overthink that four wickets have gone. If one of our batsmen get set, there won’t be much pressure on us,” fast bowler Mohammed Siraj said.

Axar had earlier downed three Bangladesh batters and all of India’s bowlers were among the wickets.

But Liton rode his luck in an innings where he was dropped twice by Kohli — first off Axar and then Ravichandran Ashwin — to score what could be 73 vital runs.

There was little support for him on the other end after opener Zakir Hasan (51) fell soon after lunch until wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan joined him at the crease and the pair compiled an aggressive 46-run stand.

That stand was broken by Axar when he drew Nurul out of his crease to set up an easy stumping for Pant.

Liton then added another brisk 60 runs alongside Taskin Ahmed (31 not out) before he was bowled by a Siraj delivery that nipped back in and found the gap between bat and pad.

Even with those small pockets of resistance, India looked to be in complete control of the match, picking up regular wickets with all their bowlers getting a part of the spoils.

Ashwin had Najmul Hossain trapped leg-before for five in the second over of the day before Siraj removed Bangladesh’s first-innings top-scorer Mominul Haque for the same score.

Unadkat then got skipper Shakib (13) to spoon a length delivery to Gill at cover in his first over of the day.

With the hosts struggling, Axar added to their misery on the stroke of lunch, trapping the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim lbw for nine.

He added two more to his tally after the break, getting Mehidy lbw for nought before dismissing Nurul for 31.

Siraj, Ashwin, and a run-out accounted for the final three wickets.

The Bangladesh bowlers had given their side a glimmer of hope in Friday’s final session, restricting India’s lead to 87 runs just when the visitors looked like they might amass a mammoth score.

Pant and Iyer were running rampant, with both crossing fifty at rapid pace, ending at 93 and 87 respectively, but Bangladesh knocked over the last six Indian wickets for 61 runs to restrict India to 314.

India won the first Test of the two-match series by 188 runs in Chittagong.

Virat Kohli surpasses Ricky Ponting with 72nd international century

CHITTAGONG: Star Indian batter Virat Kohli on Saturday surpassed former Australian captain Ricky Ponting in the list of batters with the most international centuries, courtesy of his magnificent 113 against Bangladesh in the third ODI.

Following his 85-ball century, Kohli joined a legendary list of batters with the most international centuries, led by India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar (100), followed by Kohli (72*) and Ponting (71).

Kohli, who came out to bat when India were dealing with a deplorable start; losing their opener Shikhar Dhawan at a mere score of five runs and turned things around with Ishan Kishan, who went on to score the fastest double century in men’s ODIs.

The former Indian captain put on an astounding 290-run partnership with Kishan, during which he also brought up his 44th ODI century.

Notably, Kohli’s 44th ton came after a prolonged drought of three years with his last hundred in 50 overs format was against West Indies in 2019.

Following his century, Kohli also became the first batter to score thousand or more runs against Bangladesh in ODIs.

It is pertinent to mention that Kohli had a frustrating wait for his 71st international century as he failed to amass the feat for almost three years before finally breaking the drought against Afghanistan in the recently-held ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Meanwhile, Kishan’s double century and Kohli’s ton propelled India to hammer Bangladesh by a massive margin of 227 runs as the hosts bundled out for a mere 182 in response to India’s mammoth 409/8.

Kishan double ton, Kohli 113 fire India to 409 in Bangladesh ODI

CHITTAGONG: Ishan Kishan hit the quickest-ever double century in one-day internationals in 126 balls as he demolished the Bangladesh bowling alongside Virat Kohli to lead India to 409-8 in the third match on Saturday.

The left-handed Kishan, who made the team in the absence of injured skipper Rohit Sharma, made full use of the opportunity in Chittagong with his 210 coming off 131 balls including 24 fours and 10 sixes.

He and Kohli, who made 113, put on 290 runs for the second wicket — the seventh highest partnership in ODI history.

India’s 409 was their fourth-highest ODI score and the highest-ever total against Bangladesh by any team as the tourists looked for a consolation win — the hosts won the first two matches to secure the series.

Bangladesh will need a record total of their own if they are to secure a third win — they have never scored more than 333 in an ODI.

Kishan raised his maiden ODI hundred with a four as he let out a scream, and kept up the charge to convert into a double ton off Mustafizur Rahman as he and Kohli danced in the field.

Kishan is only the fourth Indian batsman to score an ODI double ton after Rohit — who has done so three times — Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.

India lost Shikhar Dhawan for three in the fifth over after being invited to bat first, but Kishan hit back with a string of boundaries and took control of the innings with Kohli.

Kohli was dropped on one by skipper Liton Das, who spilled an easy catch at mid-wicket, and soon got into his groove but remained happy to play second fiddle to the attacking Kishan.

Kishan finally fell to a well-judged catch in the deep by Liton off Taskin Ahmed as he walked back to a standing ovation.

Star batsman and former captain Kohli hit Ebadot Hossain for six to register his first ODI century since August 2019 off 85 balls.

It took his century count in all three formats to 72, surpassing former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting.

Tendulkar remains top with 100 international tons in a stellar career that ended in 2013.

India lost quick wickets including stand-in skipper K.L. Rahul for eight and Kohli in the space of three balls, but Washington Sundar’s quickfire 37 led the visitors past 400.

Rohit’s grit in vain as Bangladesh clinch ODI series after last-ball thriller

MIRPUR: Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s fighting knock with an injured thumb went in vain as Bangladesh held their nerves calm to win the last ball-thriller and clinched the ODI series 2-0 with one match to spare.

Set to chase 272, India fell five runs short despite a fighting knock from their captain Rohit, who produced a quickfire 51-run knock in just 28 deliveries, laced with three boundaries and five sixes.

Earlier in the first innings, Rohit injured his hand while taking a catch and went off the field for scans and was later seen in the pavilion with a bandaged thumb.

At one point, India were comfortably cruising in pursuit of the run chase during the fifth wicket partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel as they added 107 runs at a decent rate.

The duo appeared solid –both scoring half-centuries — seemed to have taken the game away from the hosts’ grasp before their hero Mehidy Hasan Miraz struck to break the crucial partnership.

Two setbacks in quick successions including their set batter Patel rocked India’s pursuit as they slipped to 207/7 in the 43rd over.

Following the slump, injured Indian captain Rohit displayed sheer grit as he walked out to bat for his side with an injured thumb.

The right-handed batter defied the odds as he produced fireworks; scoring a quickfire fifty to keep his side in the hunt.

His heroics, however, turned out to be insufficient in the end as Bangladesh ran away with a narrow five-run victory to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Iyer remained the top-scorer for India with a cautious 82-run knock, while Patel scored a run-a-ball 56. The rest of the Indian batters failed to contribute significantly in the run chase.

Batting first, Bangladesh managed to amass 271/7 at the back of an astounding century from Miraz.

The home side were off to a dismal start as they were 69/6 in the 19th over before Mahmudullah and Miraz took charge and turned the game on its head with a magnificent partnership.

The duo waived off the threat from the Indian bowling attack and scripted an astounding counterattack; adding 148 runs for the seventh wicket before Mahmudullah perished.

The right-handed batter scored a valiant 77 off 96 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

Despite his dismissal, Miraz stood firm and kept the scoreboard ticking with some help from tailender Nasum Ahmed (18).

He then went on to smash his second ODI century as he remained unbeaten on 100 off just 83 deliveries including eight boundaries and four sixes.

Bangladesh beat strong India in low-scoring thriller

MIRPUR: Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz put on a valiant show with the bat as he powered the hosts to claim a thrilling one-wicket victory over strong India in the first ODI here on Sunday.

With his side struggling at 136/9 in pursuit of a paltry 187-run target, Miraz held his nerves calm and put on an astounding 54-run match-winning partnership with tailender Mustafizur Rahman.

Indian bowlers, who managed to make an anticipated one-sided affair interesting with timely strikes, failed to draw the last success as Miraz and Rahman remained unbeaten to power Bangladesh to a thrilling victory.

Bangladesh’s hero with the bat Miraz played a gritty knock of 38 runs, while Rahman played a crucial knock of 10 not out.

Earlier, Bangladesh were cruising easily towards glory when they were 74/2 in the 20th over in pursuit of a paltry target before they lost their top-scorer and captain Liton Das.

The right-handed batter scored 41 off 63 deliveries with the help of three boundaries.

Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan then also departed, briefly after Das’ dismissal and Bangladesh, as a result, slipped to 95/4.

Shakib’s dismissal sparked a frustrating collapse in the hosts’ batting lineup and soon slipped to 136/9; needing another 51 runs.

Batting first, a strong Indian batting lineup failed completely and could only manage to amass 186 before bundling out in the 42nd over.

Shakib was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh as he bagged five wickets for a mere 36 runs in his quota of 10 overs while Ebadot Hossain was also lethal with his bowling figures of 4/47.

KL Rahul was the leading run-getter amid India’s dismal batting show as he scored 73 off 70 balls, laced with five boundaries and four sixes.

Besides Rahul, captain Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer were the other two notable run-getters as they scored 27 and 24 respectively. Whereas, Indian touring batters even failed to amass double figures.

India hold off Bangladesh in a rain-hit T20 WC thriller

ADELAIDE: Indian bowlers held their nerves calm to keep momentum-filled Bangladesh at bay and successfully defended the revised 151-run target to power their side to a much-needed victory in the rain-affected Super 12s fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Bangladesh opener Litton Das provided a flying start to his side in the run chase with his quickfire fifty.

Das’ fifty powered Bangladesh to 66/0 in seven overs when rain intervened and the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method revealed that the side was 17 runs ahead of the par score.

Luckily for India, the rain stopped and allowed the action to resume with the second innings reduced to 16 overs and the target was revised to 151.

The resumption of the action turned out to be lethal for Bangladesh as the side lost their key batter Das with just two deliveries into the eighth over.

He remained the top-scorer for Bangladesh with a quickfire 60 off 27 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and three sixes.

Das’ dismissal triggered a frustrating collapse for Bangladesh as their batting lineup slipped to 108/6 in the 13th over with their captain Shakib Al Hasan also falling cheaply after scoring just 13.

Bangladesh wicketkeeper batter Nurul Hasan and tailender Taskin Ahmed put on an astounding partnership for the seventh wicket and kept Indian bowlers on their toes.

The duo, however, remained unable to power their side to glory and fell just five runs short as Bangladesh could get to 145/6 in 16 overs.

Nurul remained unbeaten with his gritty 25 off 14, while Taskin could score 12 not out.

Arshdeep Singh – who held his nerves calm to successfully defend 20 runs in the final over – and Hardik Pandya bagged two wickets each, while Mohammed Shami made one scalp.

India, batting first on the invitation of Bangladesh captain Shakib, posted a mammoth 184/6 at the back of Kohli and Rahul’s brilliance.

The men in blue had a dismal start to their innings as they lost their skipper Rohit Sharma (2) with just 11 runs on the board in the fourth over.

Following the horrific start, Kohli and Rahul stood up for the team and anchored the innings with a valiant 67-run partnership for the second wicket.

The second wicket stand proved vital for India as the duo added 67 runs in just six overs before the core aggressor Rahul fell to top-ranked T20I all-rounder Shakib.

The right-handed batter ended his poor form with a brilliant 50 off just 32 deliveries with the help of three boundaries and four sixes.

The new top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav then joined Kohli in the middle and added 38 runs for the third wicket.

Yadav dominated the quickfire stand with a brilliant cameo of 30 before Shakib castled him in the 15th over. He faced just 16 deliveries and smashed four boundaries.

Kohli, however, remained firm at the crease and stitched brief partnerships with Hardik Pandya (5), Dinesh Karthik (7) and Axar Patel (7) and took his side past the 150-run mark in 18 overs.

All-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin chipped in with a quickfire 13 off six at the death and put on an unbeaten 27-run partnership with Kohli in just nine deliveries.

Kohli remained the top scorer for India with 64 not out off 44 balls, laced with eight boundaries and a six.

Hasan Mahmud led the bowling attack for Bangladesh with 3/47, while skipper Shakib bagged two wickets.
