Das, bowlers script Jaguars’ dominating triumph over Wolves in GT20

BRAMPTON: Surrey Jaguars put on a dominant show with the ball before Litton Das’s half-century led them to a convincing six-wicket victory over Brampton Wolves in the 18th match of the GT20 Canada.

Put into bat first, the strong Wolves batting lineup crumbled against a disciplined Jaguars’ bowling attack and could score a meagre 128/9 in the allotted 20 overs.

The home side after getting off to a shaky start, kept losing wickets at an alarming rate which barred them from registering a decent total on the board.

Former New Zealand all-rounder Colin de Grandhome waged a lone battle with a gutsy run-a-ball 34 and top-scored for the Wolves.

The next notable run-getters for the Wolves were Nitish Kumar, Mark Chapman and Aaron Johnson, who scored 14 each, followed by Usman Khan, scoring a cautious 13 up the order.

Besides them, none of the Wolves’ batter could enter into the double figures.

Matthew Forde, Ayaan Khan and Ammar Khalid bagged two wickets each for the Jaguars while Spencer Johnson made one scalp.

In response, Litton Das’s sensible half-century recovered Jaguars from an early collapse and to a comfortable victory with 11 balls to spare.

The Jaguars got off to a shaky start to the pursuit as they lost three wickets with just 21 runs on the board in 4.3 Overs as Jatinder Singh (5), Mohammad Haris (9) and Pragat Singh (0) perished cheaply.

Das and skipper Iftikhar Ahmed then stitched a match-defining 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket to propel the Jaguars in touching distance to the glory.

The pair batted with utmost domination and was looking confident to carry their bat all the way through before Shahid Ahmadzai finally dismissed Das.

He top-scored for the Jaguars with a 45-ball 59, laced with three boundaries and three sixes.

Meanwhile, Iftikhar Ahmed stood his ground firm and steered his side over the line with an unbeaten 38 from 41 balls with the help of one boundary and two sixes.

Shahid Ahmadzai, Chris Green, Logan van Beek and Tim Southee could pick up a wicket apiece for the Wolves.

GT20: Brampton Wolves, Surrey Jaguars split points after washout

BRAMPTON: The seventh match of the ongoing GT20 Canada between home side Brampton Wolves and Surrey Jaguars was abandoned due to persistent rain here on Sunday.

Put into bat first, Brampton Wolves could score 50/3 in 7.2 overs before rain intervened.

After multiple inspections, the umpires opted to deem the clash abandoned with no result and thus, both Wolves and Jaguars were awarded a point each.

Wolves, who started their GT20 campaign with two straight victories, held the top position in the standings with five points in three matches while Jaguars got their first points and sit at fifth.

The Wolves next face Montreal Tigers on Thursday while the Jaguars will take on Toronto Nationals tomorrow.

In the other GT20 fixture on Sunday, Left-arm pacer Kaleem Sana returned exceptional figures of 3/8 before a sparkling half-century by Chris Lynn led Montreal Tigers to a statement seven-wicket victory over Mississauga Panthers.

Put into bat first, the Panthers could accumulate a modest total of 140/6 in the allotted 20 overs despite James Neesham’s unbeaten half-century.

The Panthers had a shaky start to their innings as they were two down for a mere eight inside two overs.

After losing back-to-back wickets, Azam Khan and Navneet Dhaliwal stitched a crucial 45-run stand for the third wicket until the former’s departure in the ninth over.

Azam scored 26 off 19 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and two sixes.

James Neesham joined Dhaliwal in the middle after Azam’s dismissal and the pair added a cautious 41-run partnership for the fourth wicket before the latter perished in the 15th over.

Dhaliwal scored 46 but remained too slow as he conceded 47 deliveries.

The Panthers then lost two more quick wickets but Neesham waged a lone battle with an unbeaten half-century and bolstered the score at the backend.

His 35-ball 54 featured four boundaries and two sixes.

Kaleem Sana led the bowling attack for the Tigers with 3/8, followed by Carlos Brathwaite’s 2/21 while Shakib Al Hasan made one scalp.

The Tigers comfortably accumulated 141 for the loss of just three wickets with 25 balls to spare, thanks to a brilliant half-century by Chris Lynn.

The Tigers had a contrasting start to the run chase as they lost Muhammad Waseem (4) in the second over with just 12 runs on board.

Following the early blow, skipper Lynn and Shakib Al Hasan anchored the run chase with a brisk 60-run partnership before Usman Qadir dismissed the latter in the ninth over.

Shakib scored 36 from 24 balls, laced up with five boundaries and two sixes.

Sherfane Rutherford then played an important 27-run cameo but perished in the 15th over when his side was 10 runs away from victory.

Meanwhile, Lynn carried his bat all the way through and steered his side over the line. He top-scored for the Tigers with a 45-ball 64 which featured nine boundaries and a six.

For the Panthers, Jaskaran Singh, Parveen Kumar and Usman Qadir could pick a wicket each.

A comfortable seven-wicket victory led Montreal to get the behold of the second spot in the GT20 standings while the Panthers remained at the bottom.
