Verstappen wins Abu Dhabi GP, Leclerc denies Red Bull one-two

ABU DHABI: Two-time world champion Max Verstappen won the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc held off his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez to take second place in the drivers’ title championship.

The 25-year-old dominated from the pole and with a sublime performance took his record-extending 15th win of 2022.

With the closing race of the season, Red Bull extended their lead to 759 points way ahead of Ferrari’s 529, who finished second in this year’s championship.

Leclerc, who was in contention for the title earlier this year before Ferrari’s season collapsed under a barrage of mistakes and reliability issues, beat Perez on divergent tactics to finish in second on Sunday.

Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettels ended his glittering career with a point. Although, the four-time champion wanted to achieve more on his final race before a one-stop strategy forced him behind his team-mate Lance Stroll and Alpine’s Esteban Ocon.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz rounded out the podium after he engaged in a tense race with seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who struggled with his Mercedes for much of the race and retired in the closing laps with a hydraulic issue.

The Briton ended the season for the first time without a win while his team-mate George Russell finished in fifth only after having to serve a five-second penalty for an unsafe release in the pits.

Perez holds off Leclerc to win Singapore GP, Verstappen finishes seventh

MARINA BAY: Red Bull’s Sergio Perez outlasted Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc to win an eventful Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday here at Marina Bay Circuit.

Title leader Max Verstappen finished seventh which prolonged his wait to clinch the world championship.

Perez waited for two and a half hours for the official confirmation of his victory as he was investigated for two occurrences of leaving more than a 10-car distance between himself and the safety car during a pair of caution periods.

Perez was ultimately handed a five-second penalty which means he kept his second win of the season, finishing 7.5 seconds clear of Leclerc.

“It was certainly my best performance,” said Perez after his astounding win. “I controlled the race. The last three laps were so intense – when I got out of the car, I felt it. I gave everything today.”

Verstappen appeared to be in contention for a podium spot before making a mistake that flat-spotted his tyres and prompted him to pit.

Verstappen needed to win the race from eighth on the grid to have any chance of winning his second consecutive championship.

“A messy and frustrating weekend for me that ended in P7 today. This is not where we want to be, but we move on to Japan. I’m looking forward to race on the great track in Suzuka, next week” tweeted Verstappen after the disappointing results.

Verstappen still has a chance to win the championship next weekend in Japan if he defeats teammate Sergio Perez by six points and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by eight points.

Even after the frustrating week in Singapore, Verstappen still holds the top position on the table and maintains a massive 104 points lead over Leclerc, who sits at No.2.

Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand,  also had a troublesome day as he finished ninth after two errors.

The seven-time world champion Hamilton had been stuck behind Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, who took the final place on the podium. In his attempt to pass, he made a mistake by running wide at Turn seven, breaking his front wing.

“(It was) a difficult start and then getting stuck behind Carlos. I don’t know why he was so slow but obviously, I was not quick enough to get past him in these conditions,” Hamilton said.

Verstappen upsets Leclerc, edges Hamilton to win Hungarian Grand Prix

BUDAPEST: Max Verstappen clinched a thrilling win at the Hungarian Grand Prix as he stormed through the field from tenth on the grid, here on Sunday.

With the remarkable victory, the Red Bull world champion recorded his eighth win of the season and 28th overall as he crossed the line 7.8 seconds clear of Lewis Hamilton with George Russell finishing third.

The victory put Verstappen 80 points ahead of title rival Charles Leclerc, who finished sixth raising objections over Ferrari’s race strategy.

Leclerc seemed to be on the course for victory before Ferrari switched him to the hard compound tyre at his second pit stop.

Despite a spin on lap 41 and briefly losing the lead to Leclerc, Verstappen overtook the Ferrari on lap 45 to retake the lead and win the race.

While Russell has been disheartened for not finishing at top of the pole, it was still a satisfying result for Mercedes who had their second consecutive double podium finish after their early-season struggles.

Charles Leclerc holds off Max Verstappen to win Austrian Grand Prix

SPIELBERG: Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc avoided a late-race scare as he held his nerve calm to overcome Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to win the Austrian Grand Prix 2022 and ended his dismal run in the season.

Leclerc, who dominated the majority of the sprint, found a late halt in his triumph as his throttle pedal started to stick, made downshifts difficult and allowed Verstappen to close to within 2.3 seconds.

The Ferrari driver, however, held his nerve calm in the late-race scare and won his first sprint after Round 3 at Melbourne. Whereas, Verstappen missed out on his third straight race despite claiming the pole here.

Another Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, who was challenging Verstappen for the second spot and was right on the former’s tail, had an unpleasant end to his race as the fire at the rear of his Ferrari signalled the end of his race.

Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton benefitted the most from Sainz’s retirement as the former champion who had battled from P8 to P4, earned a final podium berth.

Hamilton’s teammate George Russell was a distant fourth despite starting there as he lost time in his first pit stop and also a five-second penalty tacked on as he collided with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez early on.

Following a much-needed victory, Leclerc has cut Verstappen’s championship lead by 38 points. Sainz, on the other hand, moved eight points away from the third-ranked Sergio Perez.

Miami Grand Prix: Leclerc edges past Russell to lead the practice session

MIAMI: Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc inched past his Mercedes opponent George Russell by the barest of margin to lead the practice session of the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, here on Friday.

The 24-year-old from Monaco clinched the top spot in the practice session clearing Merecedes’s Russell by a mere 0.071 seconds. He also clocked the best lap in one minute and 31.098 on soft tyres to outrun his opponents.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who has won two of his four races this season, temporarily led the standings until hitting the wall on a green track and spending most of the practice in the garage. He finished third fastest, 0.179s behind the leader Leclerc.

Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s teammate, finished fourth as the second Red Bull, ahead of Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, and Williams’ Alex Albon.

A seven-time champion Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton finished eighth after obtaining a late exemption to preserve his nose stud following the sport’s bling ban.

The final race of the ongoing Miami Grand Prix will contest during the early hours of Monday with Leclerc starting from the pole position.

Ferrari’s Leclerc beats Perez to win Australian GP, Verstappen retires

MELBOURNE: Charles Leclerc has won the 2022 Australian Grand Prix, consolidating his and Ferrari’s championship leads, while Max Verstappen retired for the second time in three races. Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez finished second, with Mercedes’ George Russell rounding out the podium.

The 24-year-old from Monaco swept away his rivals, starting from the pole and winning by more than over 20 seconds over Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

With only three races in the 2022 campaign Leclerc’s Ferrari’s speed and dependability, combined with Max Verstappen’s difficulties at Red Bull and Lewis Hamilton’s woes at Mercedes, have made him the early favourite to win a maiden drivers’ title.

After a victory in the season-opening in Bahrain and a second-place finish in Saudi Arabia behind world champion Verstappen, Leclerc now leads the standings by 34 points.

Leclerc and Ferrari will have further motivation, but also added pressure, to consolidate their lead with the next race at Imola on April 24 in front of their home supporters.
