Chandimal ton gives Sri Lanka head start in second New Zealand Test

GALLE: Dinesh Chandimal scored an anchoring century to power Sri Lanka to 306/3 at stumps on the first day of the second Test against New Zealand here at Galle International Stadium on Thursday.

Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka in the first over. The young opener was caught behind off Tim Southee after managing to score just one.

Following the early hiccup, Chandimal joined Dimuth Karunaratne in the middle and launched a brilliant recovery.

The duo added 122 runs for the second wicket partnership, which lasted with Karunaratne getting run out. He fell narrowly short of his well-deserved half-century, scoring 46 off 109 deliveries with the help of four boundaries.

Dinesh Chandimal was then joined by veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews and the pair, banking on their experience, batted sensibly against the New Zealand bowling attack to put Sri Lanka in a commanding position.

Chandimal and Mathews shared a 97-run stand, which was eventually broken by Glenn Phillips in the third session of the opening day when he breached Dinesh Chandimal’s defence and knocked over the off stump.

Dinesh Chandimal remained the top-scorer for Sri Lanka with 106 off 208 deliveries with the help of 15 boundaries.

His dismissal did not halt Sri Lanka much as in-form Kamindu Mendis wasted no time in settling down.

He, alongside Mathews, had taken Sri Lanka past the 300-run mark with an unbeaten fourth-wicket partnership when on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Michael Gough called it a day.

At the conclusion of the opening day, Mathews was unbeaten on 78 while Mendis had scored 51 not out.

For New Zealand, Tim Southee and Glenn Phillips could pick up a wicket apiece on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka.

Chandimal wreaks havoc as Falcons crush Kings in LPL run-fest

DAMBULLA: Dinesh Chandimal’s swashbuckling half-century eclipsed Pathum Nissanka’s century and powered Kandy Falcons to a seven-wicket victory over Jaffna Kings in the 11th match of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024.

The Falcons had a mountain to climb as they needed to chase down a stiff total of 225 in the allotted 20 overs.

The defending champions, in the end, did so with relative ease as they only lost three wickets and amassed the total with 10 balls to spare.

Senior opening batter Dinesh Chandimal was the hero for the Falcons as he came out all guns blazing and set platform with belligerent hitting.

He smashed eight fours and seven sixes on his way to a 37-ball 89 before making his way back to the dugout in the 14th over with 164 runs on the board.

Chandimal was briefly supported by Andre Fletcher (13) and Mohammad Haris (25) amid his match-defining knock.

Following his dismissal, Kamindu Mendis took the reigns of the Falcons’ run-chase and scored a match-winning half-century.

Mendis played a pivotal role in the Falcons’ success with an unbeaten 65 off 36 balls, peppered with five fours and four sixes.

Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews played a helping hand with his quickfire cameo. He scored a 13-ball 29, hitting two fours and as many sixes.

Tabraiz Shamsi bagged two wickets for the Kings while Pramod Madushan claimed one.

Earlier after being put into bat first, the Kings notched up a mammoth total of 223/7 on the board, courtesy of Pathum Nissanka’s ton.

The young opener went after the Falcons’ bowlers from the word go and carried on till his departure in the 18th over.

Nissanka top-scored for the Kings with 119 off just 59 deliveries with the help of 16 fours and four sixes.

Wicketkeeper batter Kusal Mendis (26) and Rilee Rossouw (41 off 18) supported Nissanka with notable contributions.

Dasun Shanaka was the pick of the bowlers for the Falcons with 3/40 in his four overs, followed by Ramesh Mendis and Dushmantha Chameera, picking up two each.

The seven-wicket victory took Kandy Falcons to the fourth in the LPL 2024 standings with four points in five matches while Jaffna Kings remained second with six points in as many matches.

Chandimal stars with century as Sri Lanka take lead on the third day

GALLE: Sri Lanka’s middle-order batter Dinesh Chandimal scored a magnificent century after the valiant fifties from Kamindu Mendis and Angelo Mathews to put the home side ahead of Australia on the third day of the ongoing second Test.

Following the batting masterclass from Chandimal, the hosts finished at 431/6, 67 runs ahead of Australia’s first innings total of 364.

Resuming at an overnight score of 184/2, the hosts found themselves in the driving seat after the conclusion of the third day despite an unwanted start as the side lost their overnight top-scorer Kusal Mendis.

Mendis could only manage to add one run to his overnight score as he walked back to the pavilion in the third over of the day after scoring 85. He faced 161 deliveries and smashed nine boundaries.

Following his departure, Mathews and Chandimal carried the proceedings for the team and put them into a commanding position with an astonishing 83-run partnership for the third wicket.

The veteran all-rounder Mathews, who played a valiant fifty-plus knock for his team, could not go big as Aussie left-arm pacer Mitchel Starc removed him for 52. The right-handed batter faced 117 deliveries in the course of his gritty knock and smashed four boundaries.

Following his departure, Kamindu stood up for his team and put on another key partnership for Sri Lanka. The duo added 133 runs for the fifth wicket before Mitchel Swepson claimed his second wicket by casting the left-handed batter for a magnificent 61 off 137 balls, laced with seven boundaries.

Wicketkeeper batter Niroshan Dickwella, on the other hand, could not capitalize on the solid foundation as he could only manage to score five runs in the course of his brief knock.

Sri Lanka’s top-scorer Chandimal then put on a handy 22-run partnership with Ramesh Mendis till the conclusion of the third day. Their valiant stand bolstered Sri Lanka to finish at 431/6.

Chandimal remained unbeaten with his terrific 118 off 232 deliveries with the help of 10 boundaries including a six, while Ramesh scored seven not-out. The duo will now resume the proceedings for Sri Lanka on the fourth day of the second Test.

For Australia, Nathan Lyon, Starc, and Swepson bagged two wickets each.
