Shaheen Afridi picks THIS batter over Virat Kohli as the toughest he’s bowled to

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi has picked former South Africa batting maestro Hashim Amla over India’s talismanic batter Virat Kohli as the most difficult batter he has bowled to.

During an appearance on the Bricks to Riches podcast, Shaheen spoke about his cricketing career and his future goals.

On a question regarding the most difficult batter to bowl at, Shaheen stated about the stature of Amla as a batter, highlighting his skills.

“Hashim Amla,” he replied. “I’ve played test matches and ODIs against him, and he’s a tough competitor. I have also played a match against him in the Vitality Blast— a Twenty20 cricket tournament in England. I felt that he’s a very good batsman, and he is very good at what he does,” he added.

Is Hashim Amla more than Virat Kohli? The host questioned.

“Virat Kohli is a different player, but Hashim bhai [brother], he’s the toughest. Absolute toughest,” he remarked.

Shaheen further commented on dismissing Virat Kohli and winning the match against India for the first time in a World Cup.

For context, Shaheen bowled a magical spell against India in the 2021 T20 World Cup, ripping through their top order with a fiery spell of 3 for 31 runs in his four overs.

With the help of his outstanding bowling, Pakistan eventually ended their winless run against arch-rivals India in the World Cups, defeating them by 10 wickets.

“When you get out a main player, your team gets a boost, right. That’s the main wicket you take. Pressure bills on the other team, but nothing in my mind ever. Nothing ever in my mind,” he recalled.

Shaheen Afridi is currently featuring in the T20I tri-series against Afghanistan and the hosts UAE.

The series serves as a vital preparation ground ahead of the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025, which is scheduled to start on September 9.

Pakistan will square off against India on September 14 in the marquee event.

Hashim Amla picks his top three batting icons of all time

Former South Africa opener Hashim Amla has named some of the greatest batters he has admired across generations, picking a blend of legends he grew up watching and modern stars who have left an impact on world cricket.

Currently in England for the World Championship of Legends, where he is representing the South Africa Champions, Amla reflected on the players who inspired him growing up and the ones he considers all-time greats.

Hashim Amla retires from all forms of cricket

Hashim Amla has announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket, three years after he called time on his international career.

One of South Africa’s greatest batters of all time, Amla excused himself from participating in this year’s County Championship, where he was representing Surrey Cricket Club.

Amla, 39, scored 34,104 runs across all professional formats during his illustrious career spanning over two decades.  He amassed 9,282 runs in his 124 Test appearances for South Africa between 2004 and 2019. This included 28 hundreds and an unbeaten 311 against England at the Kia Oval in 2012, which was also the first triple-century in Tests by a South African batter.

He also scored 8113 runs including 27 hundreds in 181 ODIs, and 1,277 runs in 44 T20Is, and has already embarked on a coaching career, with a stint as MI Cape Town’s batting coach in the ongoing SA20.

“It is understood he could be in the running to become South Africa’s batting coach, under the country’s new coaching structure.” reported ESPNcricinfo.

Amla retired from international cricket at the conclusion of South Africa’s World Cup campaign in 2019 and bowed out of Test cricket against Sri Lanka at Gqeberha in February the same year.

Amla was the one of impactful players for Surrey, the club which he rejoined in 2019, in the last two seasons and it was under his stewardship that  Surrey lifted the title the previous year.

I have great memories of the Oval ground and to finally leave it as a player fills me with immense gratitude for what has been,” Amla said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
“The Surrey ship runs so professionally that it would make any international player feel a sense of honour just to be involved with. I wish them all the best and many more trophies.”

‘Mohammad Asif was the toughest bowler to face’ Hashim Amla

JOHANNESBURG: Hashim Amla, the former top-ranked South African batter, rated Pakistan’s Mohammad Asif as the most challenging bowler he faced.

Amla stated that Asif was a magician with the ball while speaking to Mark Nicholas before the fourth day of the second Test between South Africa and India.

“Asif troubled me the most. He was a magician with the ball. A beautiful bowler to watch, but not so good to face,” Amla said.

“He was the toughest to face. I’d set myself up for an inswinger and he’d beat me on the outside edge. I’d prepare for an outswinger, and he would beat my inside edge and clip the bails, bowling me out,” Amla concluded.

Asif represented Pakistan in 23 Tests and 38 ODIs; picking up 106 and 46 wickets respectively.
