Saud Shakeel backs THESE youngsters as future international stars

Quetta Gladiators captain Saud Shakeel has expressed his support for two of Pakistan’s brightest young batting talents, Hassan Nawaz and Khawaja Nafay, predicting their potential to become stars in international cricket.

Speaking ahead of Gladiators’ much-anticipated PSL 10 Qualifier against title-holders Islamabad United, Saud didn’t hold back in his admiration for the duo, calling them “encouraging signs for Pakistan cricket.”

“Hassan Nawaz played all kinds of shots and was instrumental in our victories,” Saud said.

“Performances from players like Hassan and Nafay give you hope. They’re not just here to fill spots — they’re genuine contenders for the Pakistan team.”

Hassan, in particular, has been one of the breakout stars of the season.

The 22-year-old power-hitter currently sits fifth on the tournament’s top scorers list, having piled up 317 runs in 10 matches at a blistering average of 63.40 and a strike rate touching 160.

His tally includes two fifties and a stunning century, highlighting both flair and consistency.

Reflecting on the Gladiators’ journey to the playoffs, Saud Shakeel credited Hassan’s impact at key moments and revealed the early challenges around his batting position.

“We didn’t start the tournament well, but we turned things around with the bat,” he added.

“When Hassan was picked, there was always confidence in his talent, though early on, we hadn’t finalised his batting order. Whatever praise he gets, it’s still not enough.”

On Khawaja Nafay, who has quietly chipped in with crucial innings when called upon, Saud said, “Nafay grabbed his opportunity well. These performances will only boost his confidence going forward.”

Despite topping the league stage with seven wins and just two losses, Saud remained grounded, saying there’s still room for refinement.

“There is always room for improvement in every department,” he admitted. “We played the whole tournament with Finn Allen. The final XI for the Qualifier hasn’t been discussed yet, we’ll take a call based on the conditions.”

Former PCB chief heaps high praise on Hasan Nawaz

Former chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ramiz Raja has praised Quetta Gladiators batter Hasan Nawaz for his sublime century against Islamabad United in the 26th match of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 on Wednesday.

Quetta Gladiators secured a comprehensive 109-run victory over Islamabad United, securing the top spot on the PSL points table.

Hasan Nawaz’s fireworks powered Quetta Gladiators to a record-breaking 263/3 in 20 overs, the highest-ever total in PSL history.

Rilee Rossouw and Hasan Nawaz pioneered the Gladiators’ victory, both scoring centuries. Rossow smashed a blistering 104 while Hasan scored a swashbuckling 45-ball ton with the help of nine towering sixes and four elegant fours.

With this century, Hasan became only the second Pakistani player after Babar to score centuries in both the PSL and T20 Internationals (T20Is) in the same calendar year.

Ramiz Raja described Hasan Nawaz’s innings as a complete package and praised his smart batting for maintaining the Gladiators’ momentum

“Hassan Nawaz’s knock was a complete package and an absolute joy to watch,” he said.

“He kept rotating the strike, ensured Rossouw maintained his rhythm, and never let his own strike rate drop. That is the hallmark of a smart batter — playing for the team while sustaining personal momentum,” he added.

Ramiz Raja credited Hasan with helping Quetta Gladiators reach a record PSL total, stating that the youngster’s game awareness helped his team set up a formidable target.

“If Hasan hadn’t held his ground and batted sensibly, the team would not have reached that total,” Ramiz stated.

The former cricketer highlighted Hasan Nawaz’s innings, mentioning that he displayed excellent control throughout his knock.

“He timed his innings perfectly, never lost control of the game, and accelerated when it mattered the most,” he concluded.

Hasan Nawaz joins unwanted club after recording consecutive ducks

The opening batter of the Pakistan cricket team, Hasan Nawaz, registered an unwanted record to his name after registering consecutive ducks in the first two games of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old batter was among the three debutants for Men in Green in the first T20I against New Zealand on March 16 in Christchurch.

The right-hander could not open his account in the series opener, falling to New Zealand’s Jacob Duffy.

Eventually, Pakistan lost the game by nine wickets after being bundled out for 91 runs in 18.4 overs.

In the second T20I, the Islamabad-born batter was dismissed by Duffy once more on a duck.

The young batter faced three balls and did not score a single run. He joined his compatriot Arshad Iqbal on an unwanted list of players with consecutive ducks in their first two T20I appearances.
