Hayley Matthews named ICC Women’s Player of the Month for June

DUBAI: West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews has added another feather to her cap, clinching the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for June 2025 following her stellar showing in the T20I series against South Africa.

Matthews edged out South Africa’s Tazmin Brits and teammate Afy Fletcher to secure the honour, her fourth ICC Player of the Month title, equalling Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner for the most by a female cricketer.

The 26-year-old all-rounder was instrumental in the West Indies’ 2-1 series win over South Africa at home.

She finished as the Player of the Series after amassing 147 runs at an average of 73.50 and a strike rate of 120.49, while also chipping in with two wickets with her off-spin.

Hayley Matthews, who previously won the award in November 2021, October 2023, and April 2024, credited her recent form and team success while speaking to ICC Digital.

“It’s an honour to receive the Player of the Month award again,” Matthews said.

“I’ve been pleased with my form recently, but more importantly, it’s been great to contribute to the team’s success, especially in a hard-fought T20I series against South Africa.”

Looking ahead, the West Indies captain said she remains focused on the bigger picture.

“Recognition like this is appreciated, but my focus remains on what’s ahead. There’s a lot more I want to achieve, both personally and with this team,” she added.

“We’re heading in the right direction, and I’m excited about where we can go from here.”

Hayley Matthews crowned ICC Women’s Player of the Month for April 2024

DUBAI: West Indies captain Hayley Matthews has been named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for April 2024 after a string of all-round performances against Pakistan.

The all-rounder edged out tough competition from South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt and her Sri Lankan counterpart Chamari Athapaththu.

Notably, Matthews won the coveted monthly ICC award for the third time, adding success in April to previous wins in November 2021 and October 2023.

Australia’s Ashleigh Gardner is the only player to have won the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award on more occasions (four) than Matthews.

“I’m really happy to win the award again. The performances resulted in the team’s success and that’s the most important thing for me as captain,” Matthews said.

“To win in Pakistan … was always a big goal. I wanted to perform well and contribute to the team’s success so to be able to have performances and get the results that was really good and showed that the hard work and the concentration in Pakistan paid off.

“Being able to set some new records and achieve some new milestones as well was good for me so I’m extremely happy. We have confidence and we will take this with us going into the tour of Sri Lanka and look to secure more crucial points in the ICC Women’s Championship.”

In April 2024, Hayley Matthews featured in three ODIs and as many T20Is, all against Pakistan away from home.

In the ODI series, a part of the ICC Women’s Championship, Matthews accumulated 325 runs at an astounding average of 162.5 and also claimed six wickets.

She was equally impressive for the West Indies in the T20I series, scoring 126 runs at an average of 42 and claiming six wickets.

Hayley Matthews won four Player of the Match awards, two each in the ODI and T20I series against Pakistan. She was also adjudged the Player of the Series in ODIs.

Sidra Ameen named ICC Women’s Player of the month for November 2022

DUBAI: Pakistan opener Sida Ameen won the prestigious ICC Women’s Player of the month award for November 2022.

International Cricket Council on Monday, named Sidra as the winner of the award following his sensational run with the bat in the home series against Ireland, scoring 277 runs in the three ODI games.

Thailand’s Natthakan Chantham and Ireland’s Gaby Lewis were the other two nominees for the award but the Pakistani opener came out on top and claimed the title.

Sidra played an incredible knock of 176 off 151 balls – the fifth-highest individual score in women’s ODI history – in the opening match of the series and stitched an astounding 221-run opening partnership with Muneeba Ali, who also raised a century in that match.

“The century was also Pakistan’s first score greater than 150 in women’s ODIs. She went on to make another brilliant contribution in the series at the same venue, making 91* in the second match as Pakistan completed a series victory,” said ICC in a media release issued on Monday.

Thanks to her brilliant performances, Sidra rose to the 22nd position on the ICC Women’s ODI Batting Ranking and is currently the highest-ranked batter of Pakistan on the list.

“I feel great to have won this award,” she said as quoted by the ICC. “It is also special following my teammate Nida Dar who won the award for October.”

“This shows our team has displayed some great performances in the past few months in international cricket. she added.

The 30-year-old opener further expressed that her performance with the bat against Ireland which helped the side to claim the sweep over Ireland in the ODI series would always remain close to her heart.

“Individually, this year has been great for me, I have scored three ODIs centuries and all coming this year. And to top it off, ending the year by winning the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for November is just amazing,” she said.

Tuba Hassan wins ICC Women’s Player of the Month Award for May 2022

DUBAI: New entrant to international cricket Pakistan’s leg-spinner Tuba Hassan made a significant impact in her debut month as she has won the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Player of the Month award for May 2022.

Tuba, for her brilliant home series with the ball against Sri Lanka Women’s team, won the ICC Women’s Player of the Month Award for May 2022.

The leg-spinner, who just played her first international game in May, found herself immediately in the nomination before winning the award in her first nomination.

In her debut international match, the leg-spinner shone with a splendid bowling figure of 3-8, which bolstered her to claim the Player of the Match award on her debut.

Tuba, however, then only managed to pick up a wicket each in the next two games but was outstanding with her economy. The leg spinner picked a total of five wickets in the series at an average of 8.8 and an astounding economy of 3.6; to claim the Player of the Series award in Pakistan’s 3-0 clean sweep.

To win the POTM title, Tuba edged past her skipper Bismah Maroof and 17-year-old Trinity Smith from Jersey.

It is pertinent to mention here that Tuba has become the first Pakistan player to win the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award. Whereas, Fatima Sana is the only player to win the annual ICC Award as the right-arm pacer has won the ICC Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award in 2021.

Tuba, Bismah nominated for ICC Women’s Player of the Month

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) nominated two Pakistan women’s team players, the skipper Bismah Maroof and the new entrant Tuba Hassan in recognition of their phenomenal performances in the recently concluded home series against Sri Lanka women.

Pakistan national women’s team skipper led the side from the front in the T20I series and became the leading run-scorer with 65 runs.

The crucial knocks showcased by Bismah enabled her team to whitewash Sri Lanka 3-0 in the series.

Tuba, on the other hand, had a dream debut as she stormed through the Sri Lanka batting order in the first T20I. She was awarded Player of the match for her exceptional 3/8.

The leg-break bowler became the ‘Player of the series’ for her economical bowling and grabbing 5 wickets in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

The 17-year-old all-rounder, Trinity Smith of Jersey has also been nominated by the ICC for Player of the Month along with Bismah and Tuba.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan women’s team maintained a successful run in the recently concluded historic tour of Sri Lanka to Pakistan after 17 years for a bilateral series. Pakistan whitewashed Sri Lanka in the T20I series while also the ODI series 2-1.
