ICC reveals match officials for Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday announced match officials for the Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, set to be played in Pakistan from 9 April.

The tournament will be played across two venues in Punjab’s capital, Lahore, till 19 April.

The sixth edition of the qualifiers will feature four full members – Pakistan, Bangladesh, West Indies and Ireland – and associate members Scotland and Thailand.

The newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium and Lahore Cricket Club Association (LCCA) will host 15 matches of the tournament. The event opener will kick off between hosts Pakistan and Ireland on April 9.

The panel for the tournament will comprise 10 umpires and three match referees. From Pakistan, Faisal Khan Afridi and Saleema Imtiza will share the umpiring responsibilities.

Masudur Rahman Mukul and Shatira Jakir Jesy will represent Bangladesh while Zimbabwe’s Sarah Dambanevana will feature along with Donovan Koch, Babs Gcuma, Candace la Borde, Dedunu de Silva and Shaun Haig.

Ali Naqvi, Shandre Fritz, and Trudy Anderson will be in place as match referees.

Last year, Saleema Imtiaz made history after becoming the first woman from Pakistan to join an ICC panel of umpires.

Following the induction, she expressed her thoughts on inclusion, aiming to inspire a new generation of Pakistani umpires.

“This isn’t just a win for me, it’s a win for every aspiring female cricketer and umpire in Pakistan,” Saleema said.

“I hope my success motivates countless women who dream of making their mark in the sport,” she added.

Pakistan women’s team returns from Zimbabwe amid ‘Omicron’

KARACHI: Pakistan women’s team reached here on Wednesday after qualifying for the ICC Women’s World Cup on the basis of better ranking. 

Pakistan, West Indies, and Bangladesh were qualified for the World Cup after the Qualifying event was called off in Zimbabwe due to COVID-19’s newly discovered variant ‘Omicron’.

The national team returned to the country and now will stay in quarantine for the next three days.

World Cup is scheduled from 4 March – 3 April, 2022 in New Zealand.

Women’s World Cup Qualifiers called off, better-ranked Pakistan qualify

ZIMBABWE: International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s World Cup Qualifiers were called off after the outbreak of a new COVID-19 variant named Omicron across the Southern Africa region.
