India smash highest total by a full-member team in T20Is

HYDERABAD: Wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson scored a swashbuckling century and propelled India to the highest T20I total by a full-member team.

The reigning T20 champions piled up a mammoth 297/6 in 20 overs in the third T20I against Bangladesh here at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday.

India’s total is however the second-highest in all of Men’s T20Is as Nepal’s 314/3 against Mongolia remained in tact as the highest T20I total.

Opting to bat first, right-handed opener Sanju Samson gave the home side a blistering start and dominated Bangladesh bowlers with clean hitting.

Samson brought up his maiden T20I century in just 40 balls, the second-fastest by an Indian batter in Men’s T20Is.

The right-handed batter went on to score 111 off just 47 deliveries, peppered with 11 fours and eight sixes.

He was supported in the middle by skipper Suryakumar Yadav, while Riyan Parag and Hardik Pandya gave the finishing touch with quickfire cameos.

Samson was involved in a marathon 173-run partnership for the second wicket with Yadav, who struck eight fours and five sixes on his way to a 35-ball 74.

Following their back-to-back dismissals, Parag knitted a sensational partnership with Pandya and kept India in contention to amass the 300-run mark.

The duo just took four overs to add 70 runs to India’s total before Taskin Ahmed got rid of Parag in the penultimate over.

Parag scored 34 off 13 balls with the help of one four and four sixes.

Meanwhile, Pandya carried on the demolition until the final over and fell agonizingly short of a well-deserved half-century.

He remained a notable contributor to India’s record total with a breezy 47 off 18 deliveries, which featured four fours and as many sixes.

For Bangladesh, Tanzim Hasan Sakib led the way with three wickets but like his compatriots was hit for plenty.

Reddy stars as India crush Bangladesh to clinch T20 series

Young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy smashed 74 and took two wickets to help India thrash Bangladesh by 86 runs for a series-clinching win in the second T20 international on Wednesday.

Reddy’s blitz included four fours and seven sixes and his 108-run fourth-wicket stand with Rinku Singh, who hit 53, powered India to 221-9 at New Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla ground.

India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, kept Bangladesh down to 135-9 in 20 overs to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

It is the 16th successive T20 series win for India at home since 2019.

Mahmudullah Riyad top-scored with 41 for Bangladesh after the veteran batsman on Tuesday announced his retirement from T20 internationals at the end of this series.

The 38-year-old Mahmudullah hit three sixes in his 39-ball knock of his 140th T20 for Bangladesh.

Spinner Varun Chakravarthy and medium-pace bowler Reddy, playing his second match after he made his international debut in the opening win, took two wickets each for India.

The 21-year-old Reddy was named player of the match.

The tourists elected to field first and reduced India to 41-3 inside six overs before Reddy and Rinku counter-attacked in their century stand.

“I wanted that situation, wanted my batters (five, six, seven)) in that situation,” said Suryakumar.

“Happy for both (Rinku and Nitish) of them. They batted exactly the way I wanted. You got to go out there and express.”

Suryakumar praised his bowlers, especially Reddy, saying, “I wanted to see what different bowlers can do in different situations. Can they give me the difficult overs? It was his (Nitish) day, I thought let him enjoy and make it large.”

Reddy took on the attack with sixes and fours and reached his fifty in 27 balls.

Reddy hammered Mehidy Hasan Miraz for three sixes and a four before being caught out by him in the next over from Mustafizur Rahman.

Rinku kept up the attack as he smashed fast bowler Tanzim Hasan for two fours and a six to raise his fifty in 26 balls but soon got out to Taskin Ahmed.

Hardik Pandya made 32 off 19 balls before being dismissed by leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, who got two more wickets in the final over to end with three.

Bangladesh scored 14 in the first over but were never in the chase as they lost regular wickets to slip to 46-4 in 6.5 overs.

Spinners struck regular blows as Washington Sundar sent back skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto for 11 and Chakravarthy bowled Litton Das for 14 and the tourists could never recover despite Mahmudullah’s knock.

“Need to take responsibilities as batsmen,” Najmul said. “We have got to believe in ourselves. The way our bowlers bowled, they were impressive, but we couldn’t take wickets in the middle overs.”

Reddy dismissed Mahmudullah and returned with bowling figures of 2-23 from his four overs.

The third match is on Saturday in Hyderabad.

Bangladesh’s Mahmudullah Riyad announces T20 retirement

Former Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad said Tuesday his remaining two T20 matches in India will be his last international appearance in the format, vowing to play out with a “good show”.

The 38-year-old Mahmudullah, who quit Tests in 2021, is set to play his 140th T20 match for Bangladesh in the second game in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The tourists need to win in the Indian capital to keep the three-match series alive, after they lost the opener by seven wickets in Gwalior.

“I am retiring from T20 cricket after the last game of this series,” Mahmudullah told reporters.

The final match of the series will be in Hyderabad on Saturday.

“I was pre-decided before coming here. I had a chat with my family and with my coach and captain,” Mahmudullah added.

“It is the right time to move on from this format for me and the team as well and concentrate on the one-day game.”

Mahmudullah Riyad has been Bangladesh’s warhorse after he made his international debut in 2007 in a one-day international against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

He has played 50 Tests, 232 ODIs and 139 T20 matches for his country with over 10,500 runs across formats as a dependable middle-order batsman and 165 wickets with his off-spin.

“If we can play to our ability (in Delhi), then we could put up a good show”, he said.

Mahmudullah said he had “no regrets” in his 17-year career.

“I have never ever regretted, at any stage at any point of my life, playing for Bangladesh,” he said. “I have always been a team man.”

The veteran said the T20 team remains in good hands under skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.

Mahmudullah Riyad’s T20 exit comes soon after star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan announced his decision to quit the format last month during the Test series, which the tourists lost 2-0.

India’s left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh meanwhile said he was making the most of his opportunities in the national team without thinking much about the future.

“My life mantra is to enjoy the present,” Arshdeep, who made his India debut in 2022, told reporters.

“I want to do my best in all the formats wherever I get the opportunity.”

Arshdeep, who has claimed 86 wickets in 55 T20 internationals, played in India’s T20 World Cup triumph in June.

Bowlers star as India hammer Bangladesh in first T20I

Arshdeep Singh and returning Varun Chakravarthy rattled the Bangladesh batting to set up a dominant seven-wicket win for India in the first T20I on Sunday.

Left-arm quick Arshdeep and spinner Chakravarthy took three wickets to help bowl out Bangladesh for 127, a total India overhauled with 49 balls to spare in Gwalior and led the three-match series 1-0.

It was India’s first win in the format at home after they were crowned T20 World Cup champions in Barbados in June.

Opener Sanju Samson and skipper Suryakumar Yadav — both scoring 29 — started the chase with a blazing stand of 40 for the second wicket to take the steam out of the opposition attack at a new venue hosting its first international.

“We just tried to back our skills and what we decided in the team meeting, we just walked the talk,” said Suryakumar.

“The way the guys showed their character on the field, first time playing on a new ground, and the way we batted, showed our character.”

Samson, a wicketkeeper-batsman, smashed six boundaries but Suryakumar fired up the home crowd with his 14-ball knock laced with two fours and three sixes.

Suryakumar smashed Mustafizur Rahman for a six over long-on but fell next ball caught at long leg.

Hardik Pandya then clubbed 39 off 16 balls with five fours and two sixes, sharing an unbeaten stand of 52 with debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy, who made 16.

But it was the Indian bowlers who made an early impression after the hosts elected to field first and Arshdeep backed his captain’s decision with two wickets inside three overs.

Litton Das top-edged an angling delivery from Arshdeep to be caught at short cover and soon fellow opener Parvez Hossain Emon inside-edged the ball onto his stumps.

“In T20s, the first six overs are very important but we didn’t start well,” Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said. “We need a better plan for the next matches.”

Debutant quick Mayank Yadav — an IPL pace sensation who made heads turn with deliveries of more than 150 kilometres (93 miles) per hour, started with a maiden over and then struck in his second to send back Mahmudullah Riyad out for one.

Wickets kept falling and Chakravarthy, who has returned to the team after the 2021 T20 World Cup, struck regular blows with his mystery spin to rattle the opposition middle-order.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz fought hard with an unbeaten 35 but found little support and Arshdeep, named player of the match, ended the innings in 19.5 overs.

Rohit Sharma admits risking collapse to defeat Bangladesh in Kanpur Test

India captain Rohit Sharma has admitted that his side was ready to suffer a first-innings collapse to ensure a result in their favour during the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur.

The second and third days were washed out however the home team still managed to secure an impressive seven-wicket victory on the fifth day of the Kanpur Test, largely due to Rohit’s bold approach.

India bundled out Bangladesh for 146 before lunch on the fifth and final day and, needing 95 for victory, reached 98-3 in just 104 balls in the second session.

“We had to think a lot [about] how the game can keep moving forward once we lost two-and-a-half days,” Rohit said after the match.

“When we came on day four, we thought, okay, let’s try and get them out as quickly as possible and then see with the bat what we can do.”

Rohit Sharma revealed the strategy behind the aggressive batting in India’s first innings was to get more overs so that they could bowl out Bangladesh in the second innings.

“Once they had got 230-odd, we said it was not about the runs we get but it was about the overs we wanted to bowl at them,” he added.

“It meant we had to try and up the run-rate and score as many as possible because the pitch did not have much for the bowlers.”

The Indian captain then praised his bowlers for their brilliance on the fourth and fifth days, despite a lack of support from the pitch.

“To make a game out of that pitch was a super effort from the bowlers, and then for the batters to buy into that thought of going and getting the runs as quickly as possible,” he mentioned.

He appreciated his batters as well for playing according to the plan, however, he also acknowledged the risk of getting bowled out while playing attacking cricket, while admitting that they were ready to take the chance

“It was a risk we were willing to take because when you’re trying to bat like that, it is very easy that you can get bundled out for a low score as well,” Rohit added.

“But we were ready with that factor as well, that even if we get all out for 100-150, we wanted to give ourselves a chance to be in the game and try and get a result.”

Notably, the series victory extended India’s lead at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) rankings ahead of Australia in second.

Yashasvi Jaiswal leads India to remarkable victory in rain-hit Bangladesh Test

KANPUR: Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed 51 as India pulled off a remarkable seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in a rain-hit second Test here on Tuesday.

The hosts bundled out Bangladesh for 146 before lunch on the fifth and final day and, needing 95 for victory, reached 98-3 in just 104 balls in the second session.

Yashasvi Jaiswal reached his second fifty of the match in 43 balls including eight fours and one six before falling to Taijul Islam, ending a 58-run stand with Virat Kohli.

Kohli hit an unbeaten 29 and was there at the end as Rishabh Pant hit the winning boundary.

Bangladesh spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz had earlier removed India captain Rohit Sharma, for eight, and Shubman Gill, for six.

The series victory extends India’s lead at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) rankings ahead of Australia in second.

India rode on Jaiswal’s 72-run blitz in the first innings to force a result out of a match which saw no play on Saturday and Sunday because of rain and a wet outfield.

Bangladesh resumed their second innings on 26-2 on the final day, 26 runs behind, but the batting fell apart during the first session, with opener Shadman Islam top scoring on 50.

Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets each.

Mushfiqur Rahim frustrated India as the lunch break was delayed for the final wicket. He was last man out when Bumrah bowled him for 37.

Off-spinner Ashwin broke through in the third over of the day when he had first-innings centurion Mominul Haque caught at leg slip by KL Rahul for two.

Left-arm spinner Jadeja, who had taken his 300th Test wicket on Monday, struck in his first over of the day when he bowled captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who had made 19.

Shadman reached his fifty off 97 balls but fell almost immediately after to fast bowler Akash Deep.

Jadeja also picked up the wicket of veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, caught and bowled without scoring, in what could be the former captain’s last Test for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh were bowled out for 233 when they resumed their first innings on Monday. India then batted at a blistering pace as they declared on 285-9 from just 34.4 overs.

The teams now head into a three-match T20 series starting on Sunday in Gwalior.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (31) was the only other batter with a significant contribution.

Bad weather spoils day one of second India-Bangladesh Test

KANPUR: Bad light followed by heavy rain ended play before tea on day one of the second Test between India and Bangladesh here on Friday.

The visitors were batting at 107-3 with Mominul Haque (40) and Mushfiqur Rahim (6) on the crease when dark clouds made visibility tough and umpires took the players off the ground after lunch.

Dim light turned into heavy rain and officials called off play after the covers were laid out, with more downpours forecast for Saturday in the northern Indian city.

India, who lead the two-match series 1-0, elected to field in overcast conditions and fast bowler Akash Deep vindicated captain Rohit Sharma’s decision with two wickets in the first hour of play.

He removed openers Zakir Hasan, caught out for a duck, and Shadman Islam, trapped lbw on 24, with his seaming deliveries to the left-handers.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who made 31, put on 51 runs with Mominul to play out the remainder of the first session, but first-match hero Ravichandran Ashwin broke the stand after lunch.

Off-spinner Ashwin, who hit a century and took six wickets in India’s opening win, took down Najmul lbw with a turning delivery from around the wicket.

The hosts have come in unchanged with three seamers, who have regularly troubled the opposition batsmen with plenty of deliveries beating the bat.

Bangladesh ex-captain Shakib, 37, announced his international retirement on Thursday and said he could be playing his last Test match if he is unable to return home for a slated South Africa series.

Shakib is a former lawmaker for the party of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina and has stayed away from Bangladesh due to the threat of criminal charges levelled against him and dozens of her former allies.

India are favoured to sweep the two-match series after winning the opener in Chennai by 280 runs and extend their advantage at the top of the World Test Championship rankings.
