Former India cricketer lauds Siraj for filling Bumrah’s boots

Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has heaped praise on pacer Mohammed Siraj for his standout performance in the ongoing fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval.

Siraj was instrumental in India bundling out England for 247 in their first innings on Day 2, finishing with figures of 4 for 86.

Following the second day’s play, Chopra highlighted Siraj’s ability to lead the attack in the absence of senior partner Jasprit Bumrah.

“Siraj might go for a few runs, but he sticks to his plan of bowling longer spells, and that’s the key to his success in taking wickets,” Chopra said in a YouTube video.

The former opener highlighted an interesting statistic: Mohammed Siraj averages 35.00 when playing alongside Bumrah, but that number significantly drops to 25.59 when he leads the attack without Bumrah.

“He raises his game when Bumrah isn’t there. The start wasn’t good; they were getting hit. When we were playing, it seemed like a green top and batting looked very difficult, but when they came, it seemed like it had become a road.

“They were hitting at seven to eight runs per over. That was dangerous,” Chopra explained.

“He raises his game when Bumrah isn’t there. The start wasn’t great; they were getting hit,” Chopra remarked.

“It looked like a green top when we were batting, but when England came in, it looked like a road. They were scoring at seven to eight runs per over; that was dangerous.”

While acknowledging that Mohammed Siraj isn’t flawless, Chopra stressed that effort has never been in question.

“He might not always bowl perfectly, sometimes straying down the leg side or conceding runs at a higher economy rate,” he added.

“These things can happen to anyone. But have you ever seen him bowl at 70 percent? Has there ever been a time when Siraj didn’t give his absolute best?”

Shubman Gill breaks Gary Sobers’ 59-year-old record at The Oval

LONDON: India Test captain Shubman Gill carved his name into cricketing history on Thursday by breaking a record held by West Indies great Sir Gary Sobers, which had stood unchallenged for nearly six decades.

On Day 1 of the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval, Gill went past Gary Sobers’ record for most runs by an overseas captain in a Test series held in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia).

Sobers had scored 722 runs in the 1966 series in England. Gill needed just one run to overtake that mark and did so with a couple off the sixth ball he faced.

He went on to make 21 runs in the first innings, pushing his series tally to 743 runs.

The 25-year-old also eclipsed another legendary Indian name, Sunil Gavaskar, whose 732 runs in the 1978-79 home series against the West Indies were the most by an Indian captain in a single Test series.

Shubman Gill now sits third on the all-time list for most runs by a captain in a Test series.

Only Don Bradman (810) and Graham Gooch (752) stand ahead of him. With a second innings still to come, Gill has a chance to overtake both and rewrite another page in the record books.

He is also inching closer to Gavaskar’s overall Indian record of 774 runs in a single Test series, a milestone set during the iconic 1971 tour of the West Indies.

Rishabh Pant’s replacement named for fifth England Test

MANCHESTER: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named uncapped wicketkeeper Narayan Jagadeesan as the replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant ahead of the fifth Test against England, which is scheduled to be played at The Oval.

The 29-year-old wicket-keeper from Tamil Nadu has received his first call-up to the Indian team and is expected to join the squad in London by Tuesday after obtaining his visa on Sunday morning.

He will serve as a backup to Dhruv Jurel, who has kept wickets in the last two Test matches against England in Pant’s absence.

For the unversed, Rishabh Pant fractured his right foot while batting on the first day of the recently concluded fourth Test at Old Trafford.

Earlier in the series, he also struggled with a finger injury during the third Test, but he continued to bat despite these ongoing issues.

Pant’s injury turned out to be a fortunate opportunity for Jagadeesan, who has consistently performed well in domestic cricket and has long caught the attention of national selectors.

He topped the run charts for Tamil Nadu in consecutive Ranji Trophy seasons, scoring 816 runs at an average of 74.18 in 2023-24, followed by 674 runs at an average of 56.16 in 2024-25.

Since making his first-class debut in 2016, Jagadeesan has accumulated a total of 3,373 runs in 79 innings at an average of 47.50.

His impressive record includes 10 centuries and 14 half-centuries, with a career-best score of 321 against Chandigarh in January 2024.

Mohammed Siraj penalized for code of conduct breach in Lord’s Test

LONDON: India pacer Mohammed Siraj has been fined 15 percent of his match fee by the ICC for breaching the Code of Conduct during the ongoing third Test against England at Lord’s.

The incident took place on Day 4, when Siraj gave England opener Ben Duckett an animated send-off after dismissing him in the sixth over of England’s second innings.

The fast bowler was found to have celebrated excessively in close proximity to the departing batter.

The ICC confirmed that Siraj breached Article 2.5 of its Code of Conduct, which pertains to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

In addition to the fine, Siraj was handed one demerit point, his second in a 24-month period, bringing him halfway to the threshold of four demerit points that could trigger a suspension.

Mohammed Siraj admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.

The charge was laid by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, with third umpire Ahsan Raza and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd also involved.

For the unversed, England were bowled out for 192 in their second innings, setting India a target of 193.

But the visitors stumbled in the chase, reduced to 54-4 by stumps on Day 4.

KL Rahul, who scored a century in the first innings, remains key for India and will resume Day 5 on 33 not out, with 135 runs still needed.

The five-match Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy is currently locked at 1-1, with India bouncing back strongly in the second Test after losing the series opener.

Rishabh Pant penalized for code of conduct breach during Headingley Test

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the Code of Conduct during the third day of the first Test against England at Headingley.

The 27-year-old was found guilty of a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match.”

The incident occurred towards the end of the 61st over in England’s first innings, when the on-field umpires inspected the condition of the ball but opted not to replace it.

The wicket-keeper, unhappy with the decision, expressed his frustration by arguing with the umpires and then throwing the ball on the ground.

Following the incident, Rishabh Pant was handed an official reprimand and received one demerit point, his first such offence within a 24-month period.

Pant admitted the breach and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, thereby avoiding a formal hearing.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, along with third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Mike Burns.

According to ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches can lead to a minimum sanction of an official reprimand and a maximum of a 50% match fee fine along with one or two demerit points.

Despite facing disciplinary action, Pant played a pivotal role with the bat, scoring a valuable century that helped India set a target of 371 runs.

In this match, he not only scored centuries in both innings but also became the first Indian wicketkeeper to achieve this feat.

Gautam Gambhir rushes back home from England due to family emergency

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has flown back to New Delhi from England due to a family emergency, just before the team’s intra-squad match against India A in Kent.

India are currently in the United Kingdom, gearing up for a crucial five-match Test series against England, set to begin on June 20 at Headingley.

The series will also mark the start of a new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the beginning of Shubman Gill’s tenure as India’s Test captain.

In Gambhir’s absence, assistant coaches Sitanshu Kotak and Ryan ten Doeschate will oversee preparations alongside bowling coach Morne Morkel. Meanwhile, Hrishikesh Kanitkar continues to head the India A setup.

Gambhir’s absence comes at a decisive moment, especially as the team management was expected to finalise the batting lineup in the lead-up to the first Test.

With the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two key spots in the batting order are up for grabs. B Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair are currently in contention to fill those shoes.

After replacing Rahul Dravid as head coach post the T20 World Cup last year, Gautam Gambhir has faced a mixed start to his tenure, enduring Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia before bouncing back to lead India to glory at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

As for the playing XI, one of the pressing questions revolves around the seam-bowling allrounder role.

Shardul Thakur and Nitish Reddy are the frontrunners, with Reddy taking two wickets in 26.5 overs and Thakur bagging two across 43 overs during the first-class fixtures against Lions.

India’s pace unit also remains a topic of debate, with Jasprit Bumrah a certainty and two of Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna expected to partner him in the series opener.

Jasprit Bumrah on the brink of surpassing Wasim Akram’s record

Jasprit Bumrah, the pace spearhead of India, is on the brink of breaking a unique bowling record, currently held by legendary Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram.

The former captain of Pakistan has taken the most Test wickets by an Asian bowler in SENA countries — South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia.

During his legendary career, he played 32 Test matches across these countries and achieved a remarkable total of 146 wickets.

However, Bumrah is just one wicket away from matching this record, having taken 145 wickets in only 31 matches within the SENA nations.

With the five-match Test series against England approaching, Bumrah could become the first Asian bowler to reach 150 Test wickets in SENA countries.

It’s worth noting that the Indian team management has announced that Jasprit Bumrah will participate in just three matches.

This strategic decision is aimed at carefully managing his workload, ensuring that he remains fit and minimises the risk of injury.

The five-match Test series between India and England is set to begin on 20 June at Headingley.

The teams will then move to Birmingham for the second Test, which will take place from 2 to 6 July. The third Test is scheduled to be held at the iconic Lord’s from 10 to 14 July.

Following that, the fourth Test will commence at Old Trafford on 23 July. The series will conclude with the fifth Test at The Oval, scheduled from 31 July to 4 August.

Ajit Agarkar explains Mohammed Shami’s absence from India Test squad

India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has broken his silence on the absence of Mohammed Shami from the Test squad for the upcoming England tour.

The 33-year-old, one of India’s most reliable red-ball performers, was expected to play a crucial role in the high-stakes five-Test series.

However, the BCCI has confirmed that Shami has been ruled out due to a fresh injury setback.

BCCI selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar addressed the media after the squad announcement and provided clarity on the exclusion of Mohammed Shami.

“He’s had a bit of a setback over the past week and got some MRIs done. He was not going to be able to play five Tests,” Agarkar explained.

“We don’t think his workload is where it needs to be. The medical team has confirmed that he’ll be unavailable.

“We were hoping he could play some part, but if he’s not fit, we’d rather pick players who are ready and available.”

It’s worth noting that Mohammed Shami has been a key figure in India’s pace attack for years, with 229 wickets in 64 Tests at an average of 27.71.

The BCCI also officially announced Shubman Gill as India’s new Test captain, marking the beginning of a fresh era in Indian cricket.

The 25-year-old replaces Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from the format along with veterans Virat Kohli and R Ashwin.

Gill will lead India for the first time in a challenging five-match series against England, with the first Test scheduled at Headingley, Leeds, on June 20.

The remaining matches will be played at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval.

Gill ton helps India sweep England in ODI series

Top-order batter Shubman Gill kept up his good form with a sparkling century to help India hammer England by 142 runs and sweep the ODI series 3-0 on Wednesday.

Gill’s 112 off 102 balls steered India to 356 after being sent in to bat first at the world’s biggest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.

England started strongly in their reply but once left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh removed the openers, wickets then tumbled at regular intervals and the tourists were all out for 214 in 34.2 overs.

India’s domination in the white-ball series, which started with a 4-1 win in the T20 matches, comes ahead of the 50-over Champions Trophy starting February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai.

“I don’t see there was anything wrong we did this series,” India skipper Rohit Sharma said after victory against England.

“Obviously there are certain things we are looking at (to improve). It is our job as well to keep some consistency within the squad and the communication is clear.”

Shubman Gill reigned supreme with 259 runs in three matches as he capped off the series with his seventh ODI ton after scores of 87 and 60 in the first two matches.

Gill put on 116 runs for the second wicket with Virat Kohli, who hit 52, laying the foundation for the total.

“I think this was one of the better knocks in ODIs for me,” said Gill, who was named player of the match and series. “The pitch was a bit tricky at the start so it’s satisfying.”

Shreyas Iyer also hit a 64-ball 78 as England’s bowlers struggled, apart from leg-spinner Adil Rashid’s impressive 4-64.

Rohit departed for one, caught behind off a superb seaming and quick delivery from Mark Wood in a disappointing outing after his 119 in the previous match.

However, Gill, who reclaimed the opening spot from Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Kohli steadied the ship.

Kohli reached a run-a-ball fifty to get back among the runs after an inconsistent Test series in Australia and raised the decibel level at a half-filled 132,000-capacity stadium.

Rashid got Kohli with a delivery that pitched in the middle and spun sharply to take the bat’s edge and was caught by wicketkeeper Phil Salt.

Shubman Gill, who hit 14 fours and three sixes, kept up the pace and put on 104 with Iyer before he was bowled off a googly by Rashid.

Iyer reached his second half-century of the series but also fell to Rashid, who struck again when he bowled Hardik Pandya after being hit for two straight sixes.

The England openers smashed 60 in 38 balls with the left-handed Ben Duckett, who hit 34, taking a liking to Arshdeep, hitting him for four straight boundaries.

“Our approach (with bat) is a right one, just that we haven’t executed well,” England captain Jos Buttler said. “They put a great score on the board. Shubman played a great innings.”

Arshdeep hit back to dismiss Duckett and then Salt, for 23, in successive overs before Tom Banton and Joe Root put up some resistance in a stand of 46.

However, Kuldeep Yadav got Banton caught behind for 38 and fellow spinner Axar Patel bowled Root for 24, as the England batting fell apart.

Brief scores of India And England
