India humble Zimbabwe to take unassailable lead in T20I series

Yashasvi Jaiswal and India captain Shubman Gill thrashed Zimbabwe’s bowlers to all parts of the Harare Sports Club on Saturday to secure a 10-wicket in the fourth T20I and with it claim the series.

Chasing Zimbabwe’s 152 for seven, India cruised him with 28 balls to spare to take a 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

The left-handed Jaiswal hammered 93 not out off 53 balls and was named player of the match while Gill made 58 not out off 39 deliveries.

“Chasing was something we talked about,” Gill said at the post-match presentation. “We couldn’t do it in the first game so it was good to get it done.”

Zimbabwe won the first match by 13 runs last Saturday but India have taken charge since then, dominating the next three matches.

Although captain Sikandar Raza hit 46 off 28 balls, Zimbabwe were unable to capitalise fully on their first good start of the series.

Wessly Madhevere (25) and Tadiwanashe Marumani (32) put on 63 for the first wicket after Zimbabwe were sent into bat. But the openers fell in successive overs to part-time bowlers Abhishek Sharma and Shivam Dube.

India again opted to field only four specialist bowlers, including new cap Tushar Deshpande, who claimed the wicket of Raza while conceding 30 runs in three overs.

Raza said he had thought after his team’s innings that 160 was a par score but admitted: “The way they batted, 180 would not have been enough.”

Jaiswal set the tone in the first over of India’s innings, hitting three boundaries off Richard Ngarava.

There was no let-up as India’s fifty was posted inside four overs and the hundred inside 10 overs.

Jaiswal hit 13 fours and two sixes, while Gill hit six fours and two sixes.

The series wraps up with the fifth T20 in Harare on Sunday.

Shubman Gill to lead young India squad on Zimbabwe tour

India on Monday, announced a young 15-member squad, led by Shubman Gill, for the five-match away series against Zimbabwe.

The five-match series will commence on July 6, a week after the conclusion of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

India’s squad for the Zimbabwe tour features only two players — Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson — from their T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

The squad features four players from India’s travelling reserves for the ongoing mega event, including Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmad.

Besides familiar names, India also named four uncapped players Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, Riyan Parag, and Tushar Deshpande at the back of their brilliant performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Meanwhile, young all-rounder Tilak Varma, who also had an impressive run in the IPL 2024, failed to make a cut in the Indian squad.

According to the details, Verma, who has represented India in 16 T20 internationals since his debut in August last year, is recovering from a left-hand injury, which he sustained ahead of Mumbai Indians’ last game in IPL 2024.

Avesh, Deshpande, Mukesh Kumar and Khaleel will form India’s pace attack while Nitish Reddy, who had an impressive season for Sunrisers Hyderabad, will serve as another pace-bowling action.

Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar will lead the spin attack with Riyan Parag and Abhishek Sharma as part-time options.

Pakistan to face New Zealand in semi-final as India thrash Zimbabwe

MELBOURNE: Indian opener KL Rahul and top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav powered their side to a massive 186/5 before bowlers displayed a combined effort to decimate the Zimbabwean batting order and handed their side a comprehensive 71-run victory in the last Super 12s fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Following India’s triumph over Zimbabwe, Pakistan will now face New Zealand in the first semi-final on Wednesday, while India will take on England in the second semi-final on Thursday.

Set to chase 187, the Zimbabwean batting lineup failed completely and could amass 115 runs before being bundled out in the 18th over.

Experienced all-rounder Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl put up a brief fight with their valiant knocks of 34 and 35 respectively, while the rest of the Zimbabwean batters had no answers to the Indian bowling attack.

Skipper Craig Ervine could accumulate 13 runs, while the rest of the Zimbabwean batters failed to amass the double figures.

Ravichandran Ashwin led the bowling attack for India with 3/22, while Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami bagged two wickets each.

Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

After opting to bat first, India succeeded in posting a mammoth 186/5 in their last Super 12s fixture at the back of Rahul and Kumar’s fifties.

The men in blue had a rather unwanted start to their innings as they lost their captain Rohit Sharma (15) cheaply for a mere 27 runs in the fourth over.

Following Kohli’s dismissal, Rahul too, could not hold on for long and fell briefly after amassing his half-century. He scored 51 off 35 with the help of three boundaries and as many sixes.

Replacing Dinesh Karthik in the Playing XI, Rishabh Pant, failed to make an impact with the bat against Zimbabwe and could score a mere three runs in five balls before walking back to the dugout in the 14th over.

Following Pant’s departure, Kumar and Hardik Pandya took the charge and took Zimbabwean bowlers to cleaners as they added 65 runs in just 35 balls to power India to a massive total.

Kumar was the main aggressor of the vital fifth wicket stand, while Pandya, who was rotating the strike fell in the final over after scoring a run-a-ball 18.

The top-ranked batter Kumar top scored for India with a blistering 61 off 25 balls, laced with six boundaries and four sixes.

For Zimbabwe, Sean Williams bagged two wickets for just nine runs, while Sikandar Raza, Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava struck out a batter each.
