Inzamam’s knock in vain as Zalmi edge Legends XI in flood relief exhibition match

PESHAWAR: Peshawar Zalmi emerged victorious over Legends XI by a narrow margin of six runs in the flood relief exhibition match held here at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Chasing a 145-run target, Legends XI fell short by six runs, scoring 138- 6 in 15 overs.

Legend XI started poorly in the chase, losing wickets early in the peace. As a result, they were reduced to 6-3 in just three overs.

Following the early hiccup, Azhar Ali and Humayun Farhat tried to stabilize the Legends XI innings in the chase. The duo added a 29-run stand before getting removed in quick succession.

Thus, Peshawar Zalmi tightened the grip on the match with Legends XI five down at the halfway mark of their innings.

However, legendary batter Inzamam-ul-Haq rolled back the clocks with his stroke play and played a vital role in his team’s fightback. First, he formed a brisk partnership with Arif — who was later retired due to injury.

Following that, Inzamam-ul-Haq was joined by all-rounder Azhar Mehmood, and together they formed a crucial 50-run partnership which eventually lifted them out of trouble.

The match got intense in the last over, with Legends XI still needing 22 runs. Despite the pair’s valiant knocks, their team fell short by a narrow margin.

Inzamam-ul-Haq remained unbeaten from 46 off 23 balls, whereas Mahmood scored 34* off 14 deliveries.

For Peshawar Zalmi, Muhammad Irfan and Babar Azam scalped two wickets apiece, while Salman and Zulfiqar Babar took one each.

Earlier, Peshawar Zalmi were bowled out for 144 in 14.4 overs despite a solid start from their openers.

Yasir Hameed and Babar Azam starred with the bat, both scoring vital runs for their team.

Babar scored 41 off 23 balls, whereas Hameed made 35 from 18 deliveries.

For Legends XI, Shahid Afridi and Abdul Rehman picked up three wickets each, while Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez managed to scalp two apiece.

The charity fixture, organized in collaboration with the Directorate General of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the provincial government, was held under the slogan “Khel Se Khidmat” (Service through Sports).

It was Babar’s decision to bat one-down: Inzamam-ul-Haq

LAHORE: Peshawar Zalmi Team Director Inzamam-ul-Haq revealed that skipper Babar Azam himself chose to bat at the one-down position.

Opting to bat first,  Islamabad United posted 143 for the loss of nine wickets in their allocated 20 overs.

Peshawar Zalmi successfully chased a target of 144 runs, completing the match in just 16.4 overs with six wickets remaining and 20 balls to spare here at Gaddafi Stadium on Friday.

While speaking in the post-match press conference, Inzamam backed young talent Maaz Sadaqat and reaffirming support for skipper Babar Azam’s batting position.

“Firstly, Babar is a World Cup-class player, and we did not change his batting order.”

“He is our captain, so he himself realised that he should play one-down and send Mitchell Owen as an opener due to power hitting.”

He also emphasised Babar Azam’s strike rate, stating that if he improves, it will benefit Pakistan.

“Improving his strike rate will benefit both Pakistan and Peshawar Zalmi,” he said.

He acknowledged Zalmi’s slow start to the tournament, lamenting defeats in the opening matches.

“Had we played the initial matches better, we wouldn’t be in this position,” he said.

Inzamam was full of praise for youngster Maaz Sadaqat, who impressed with the bat.

“Maaz played a brilliant innings today. His temperament stood out — that’s a key quality in T20 cricket,” he observed.

“Things can get delayed at times, but Maaz got his opportunity at the right moment — and he made the most of it,” Inzamam added.

“He was in discussion for today’s match. Hopefully, he’ll get his chance in the coming games,” he concluded.

Inzamam-ul-Haq shares what Babar Azam needs to turn things around

Peshawar Zalmi’s head coach, Inzamam-ul-Haq, has recently discussed the struggles of star batter Babar Azam and shared insights on what he needs to do to improve.

In a recent interview, the legendary batter emphasised the importance of patience and smart shot selection for Babar, suggesting that the key to finishing more matches lies in targeting the right bowlers at the right time.

“Babar, you already have all the cricket shots,” Inzamam said while speaking to Zalmi media. “But to win more matches, you need to wait for the right bowler and the right moment. Don’t try to hit every ball – be patient and smart.”

The former captain highlighted the mental side of modern cricket and how decision-making under pressure plays a decisive role, especially for top-order batters like Babar Azam.

Inzamam illuminated the secrets behind Zalmi’s success in the PSL throughout the years, attributing their impressive performance to a vibrant internal culture that fuels their ambitions and teamwork.

“We play like a family chasing a big target,” he said. “When we face tough times, we don’t give up. We stay united and fight together. That’s how we turn losses into wins.”

Babar Azam, once regarded as a benchmark for emerging batters in Pakistan, is currently under a cloud of scrutiny due to a stark decline in his batting performance.

Since his impressive score of 151 against Nepal in August 2023, Babar has not managed to score a single century across any format in international cricket.

His struggles have been particularly pronounced in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10, where his batting woes have been hard to ignore.

The tournament commenced with a dramatic low, as he registered a duck against the Quetta Gladiators, followed by a mere single run in a subsequent clash against Islamabad United.

Inzamam-ul-Haq responds to comments of Virender Sehwag

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has graciously responded to former India’s Virender Sehwag’s recent praise, saying that compliments from a former on-field rival carry “special significance.”

In an exclusive conversation with Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Peshawar Zalmi, Inzamam shared his thoughts on Sehwag’s remarks.

For the unversed, Sehwag, during a recent interview, urged young cricketers to study Inzamam’s calm and calculated approach to chasing targets under pressure.

“I’m genuinely humbled by Sehwag’s words,” he said. “Having shared so many fierce on-field battles, receiving such praise from a competitor of his stature holds special significance.”

Inzamam agreed with Sehwag’s observation, noting that successful chasing isn’t just about technical skills; temperament is the real game-changer.

“Virender Sehwag correctly identified that successful chasing is not merely about technique, it’s fundamentally about temperament,” Inzamam-ul-Haq explained.

“My approach always revolved around quickly reading match conditions, identifying favourable bowling match-ups, and crucially, maintaining unwavering self-belief until the final ball.”

The former middle-order maestro, known for his calmness under pressure and match-winning knocks, also shed light on the modern-day challenges of T20 cricket, calling it more of a mental battle than a power-hitting contest.

“T20 is a mental game now,” he stated. “You have to be smart. Chasing runs is not about hitting every ball for a six. It’s about choosing the right time to attack.”

‘India ran away from playing in Sharjah’ Inzamam-ul-Haq slams Gavaskar’s B team remarks

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq criticized Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar for his comments about the Pakistan team following their disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.

A few days earlier, during an interview, Gavaskar highlighted Pakistan’s bench strength and stated that even a second-string Indian team would defeat Pakistan.

“I think a B team from India can certainly give Pakistan a tough fight. A C team, I’m not too sure, but a B team will be very, very hard to beat for Pakistan in their current form.”

“Pakistan has talented players, but they haven’t been able to build a strong backup. It’s surprising that they have struggled to produce batters like Inzamam-ul-Haq,” said Gavaskar.

Inzamam-ul-Haq recently addressed remarks made by Sunil Gavaskar during a TV show and criticised him for giving such statements.

“India has performed well and won, but Gavaskar should also review the stats. There was a time when the Indian team withdrew from playing against Pakistan in Sharjah,” said Inzamam.

“He is an elder and a respected figure in cricket, and we hold him in high regard. You have the right to praise your team, but it’s not right to say about another team like this,” he said.

He further stated that Gavaskar is a big and respectful cricketer, but it is not appropriate to make negative comments about another team

While answering the question, Yuvraj Singh believed that Pakistan holds an advantage in Dubai conditions, likely due to its familiarity with the climate and pitch.

In contrast, Navjot Singh Sidhu argued that India is a much better-balanced team, suggesting that their overall skill set could give them the edge.

Meanwhile, Inzamam-ul-Haq took a more neutral stance, stating that both teams are equal and that the outcome may hinge on their body language and performance on the day of the match.

Additionally, Shahid Afridi emphasized that attitude and body language will play a crucial role in determining the winner of a match.

He reflected on the 2011 World Cup semifinal, noting that the team’s confidence is essential in overcoming opponents.

Former greats react to their inclusion in PCB Hall of Fame

LAHORE: Former greats Inzamam-ul-Haq, Misbah-ul-Haq, Mushtaq Mohammad and Saeed Anwar have expressed their gratitude to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for inducting them into the Hall of Fame, which now has 14 cricketers since its inception in April 2021.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, the leading run-scorer for Pakistan in ODI cricket with 11,701 runs, shared that he is honoured to join legendary players in the PCB Hall of Fame.

“I am deeply honoured to be inducted into the PCB Hall of Fame, joining a group of remarkable cricketers from my generation and those before me,” he stated.

“To be recognised by the parent organisation of Pakistan cricket is truly special and I hope this initiative continues to inspire current and future generations of cricketers.

“My journey as a professional cricketer, representing Pakistan on the world stage for nearly 16 years, has been unforgettable.

“Competing across all Test-playing nations, I am proud to say that the respect, recognition and love I have received throughout my career – both then and now – is because of Pakistan.

“Every run, half-century, century and victory, whether as a player or as a captain, has been cherished by our passionate fans, making each achievement more meaningful.

“I owe immense gratitude to my fellow cricketers, dedicated support staff and my family, without whom this journey would not have been possible.

“Representing Pakistan during an era with such high-caliber players was a privilege and their influence played a vital role in my growth and development as a batter.”

Meanwhile, Misbah-ul-Haq, who captained Pakistan to No.1 in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings in 2016, also voiced sentiments similar to those of Inzamam.

“I am deeply honoured and humbled to be inducted into the PCB Hall of Fame, joining a distinguished group of Pakistan’s finest cricketers who have not only excelled in the game but have also elevated the country’s image on the global stage,” said Misbah.

“Representing Pakistan was an absolute privilege, captaining the team was a profound honour and this recognition by the Pakistan Cricket Board serves as the perfect crowning achievement of my journey.

“Being acknowledged by your parent organisation, alongside the appreciation of cricketing experts and fellow players is both gratifying and fulfilling.

“I have been incredibly fortunate to have shared the field with some of the most talented and skilled cricketers, whose support and camaraderie enabled me to grow and improve throughout my career.

“As a captain, I had the privilege of leading players who were committed, passionate and driven to give their all for Pakistan. Their contributions were instrumental in shaping some of the most iconic moments in our cricketing history. For that, I remain deeply grateful.

“Lastly, my deepest gratitude goes to my family, whose sacrifices and encouragement allowed me to pursue and achieve my dreams. This honour belongs as much to them as it does to me.”

Mushtaq Mohammad, who made his Test debut at just 15 and captained Pakistan to their first Test victory in Australia in 1977, expressed deep gratitude for his late-career recognition.

“To be honoured and recognised 45 years after playing my last match for Pakistan is truly humbling. Joining a small group of some of the finest cricketers, including my legendary brother Hanif, is even more gratifying,” he said.

“I am deeply grateful to the Pakistan Cricket Board for once again demonstrating its affection, love and care for those who have served this great game with distinction.

“Being part of the Pakistan cricket team during its formative years was both exciting and rewarding.

“Despite having fewer playing opportunities, dealing with uncovered or matting pitches and facing fearsome fast bowlers without any restrictions on bouncers with insufficient protective gears, our matches were highly competitive and, followed and cherished by the Pakistani cricket fans, whose hearts have always beat for cricket since our very first Test in 1952.

“I feel privileged to have played alongside and against some of the most outstanding cricketers and thorough gentlemen, who played hard while always upholding the true spirit of the game.

“I am delighted to follow the growth of Pakistan cricket and the Pakistan Cricket Board, and I hope the current and future generation of cricketers will continue to bring more laurels, honours and trophies for Pakistan and its fans worldwide.”

Saeed Anwar, known for his explosive batting and record-breaking feats, including a remarkable 194 against India in 1997, was equally appreciative of his induction.

“I am deeply grateful to the independent panel for inducting me into the PCB Hall of Fame. Receiving this recognition from the Pakistan Cricket Board is an immense honour that fills me with pride,” Saeed Anwar said.

“It’s humbling to join the ranks of my childhood heroes and teammates with whom I shared and celebrated some of the most defining moments of Pakistan cricket.

“As an opening batter, I was privileged to play in an era graced by some of the most talented and accomplished cricketers who represented Pakistan.

“I cherished every moment of laying the foundation for our team, taking on the world’s best bowlers, and partnering with match-winners to bring joy to our fans.

“I am deeply grateful to the Almighty for bestowing upon me the skills, patience and strength needed to represent this great nation and be part of an exceptional team for nearly 14 years.

“My journey had its challenges, but it was a privilege to face them head-on. Each match I played for Pakistan holds a special place in my heart, though missing out on the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 remains a regret.

“This journey, filled with triumphs and lessons, wouldn’t have been complete without the overwhelming support of our fans and the camaraderie of my teammates.”
