Jasprit Bumrah set to return after injury layoff

Star Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to return after sustaining an injury during the final Border-Gavaskar Test between Australia and India on 4 January in Sydney.

Following the injury, Bumrah was subsequently ruled out of the Champions Trophy, India won last month.

He went through rehab at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, leading to uncertainty regarding his participation in the first few matches of the IPL.

For context, this marks Bumrah’s first injury since he suffered a back injury in March 2023, which caused him to miss the IPL and the ICC World Test Championship final, which India eventually lost to Australia.

The news of Bumrah’s return was announced through his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Mumbai Indians.

The five-time IPL winning team announced the arrival of the pacer with the caption “The King of the jungle is back in his kingdom” on their social media accounts.

The ace pacer joined the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians ahead of their clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on 7 April.

Jasprit Bumrah joined MI after getting clearance from the (BCCI) medical staff at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, as reported by Cricinfo.

However, Bumrah is unlikely to feature in the playing XI for their home game against RCB.

The 31-year-old fast bowler will now team up with the MI support staff, under the leadership of Mahela Jayawardene, to devise his comeback schedule.

Harry Brook withdraws from IPL to ‘recharge’ and focus on England

England star batter Harry Brook, on Monday, pulled out of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying he needed “to recharge” and focus on international cricket.

The 26-year-old, who is regarded as a front-runner to replace Jos Buttler as England white-ball captain, was signed to Delhi Capitals for the new IPL season beginning later this month.

“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL,” Brook posted on his social media. “I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters.”

Free-scoring batsman Brook also withdrew from his contract with the Delhi side last season after the death of his grandmother.

He now faces a possible two-year suspension under rules designed to prevent late pullouts from the money-spinning T20 league by overseas players. Exceptions can be made, mostly for injuries.

“I love cricket. Ever since I was a young boy, I have dreamt of playing for my country, and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level,” Brook added.

England are set to play five Tests against India from June during their home summer this year, followed by an Ashes tour to Australia starting in November.

Either side of the India Tests, England host white-ball series against each of the West Indies, South Africa and Ireland plus a one-off Test against Zimbabwe in May.

“It is a really important time for England cricket, and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series,” he further stated. “In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date.”

Buttler resigned as white-ball captain after England’s dismal group-stage exit at the Champions Trophy, where they failed to win a match.

“I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right, and playing for my country remains my priority and focus, said Brook.

“I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I receive.”

Harry Brook played one previous season in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023, when he scored a 55-ball century against Kolkata Knight Riders.

The 2025 IPL begins on March 22, when defending champions Kolkata host Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens.

MS Dhoni breaks silence on his IPL future

Former India captain MS Dhoni opened up on his Indian Premier League (IPL) future with Chennai Super Kings, asserting that the decision would be in the best interest of the franchise.

As the cash-rich league nears the auction for its 2025 edition, Dhoni put things on hold to judge the change in rules specifically regarding the players’ retention. Thus, the veteran wicketkeeper batter boasts a wait-and-watch approach.

“There is a lot of time for it,” Dhoni said at an event in Hyderabad. “We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court.

“So, once the rules and regulations get formalized, I will take a call, but it needs to be in the best interest of the team.”

For the unversed, MS Dhoni, who turned 43 in July, played the 2023 edition of the IPL with his left knee heavily strapped.

“The surgery has been done in Mumbai and he is well,” Kasi Viswanathan, the Chennai Super Kings chief executive, told AFP. “The recovery process will take its time.”

Chennai edged out 2022 IPL champions Gujarat Titans by five wickets in a last-ball thriller in Ahmedabad that started on Monday and ended past 1:30 am Tuesday.

Dhoni had played the entire IPL season with a heavily strapped left knee and although he seemed perfectly fine while keeping, he sometimes batted as late as No. 8 and didn’t appear quick when running between the wickets.

After fevered speculation that MS Dhoni might call it quits, he hinted he could do “one more season” as “a gift” to fans.

England Cricket open to IPL investment in The Hundred

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Richard Gould confirmed on Monday they have held talks with Indian Premier League (IPL) owners about acquiring a stake in their domestic The Hundred competition.

The fourth edition of The Hundred, which features eight specially created teams — each with a men’s and women’s side — rather than the traditional 18 first-class English counties, starts on Tuesday.

Its future remains uncertain, with the ECB looking to secure private investment in a bid to cement its position in the global calendar and boost the finances of the domestic game.

The ECB are trying to balance a desire for a cash injection while retaining control of the Hundred by selling off a 49 per cent stake in each team to private investors, with host teams retaining the remaining 51 per cent of shares.

But the hosts could sell part or all of their shares.

“Control comes at different levels, it comes at team level and it comes at competition level — that’s not something we are ceding control of,” ECB chief executive Richard Gould told reporters during a conference call.

“Different investor groups have different needs, for some it is about control of what happens on the field, for others it’s the commercial element.

“You’re right about the strength of the Indian market — it represents probably 90 percent of the revenues coming into the ICC (International Cricket Council) and we have seen the proliferation of IPL teams moving outside of their home market into other national markets. I think that’s to be welcomed,” he added.

The cash-rich T20 IPL, a multi-million dollars spectacle underpinned by the mass enthusiasm for cricket in India, the world’s most populous nation, has changed the sport’s global landscape, with players no longer needing to go through the grind of five-day international Test matches in order to enjoy lucrative careers.

There is a view that IPL owners, such as the billionaire Ambani family who are in charge of the Mumbai Indians, would only be interested in full control of The Hundred team.

“There is certainly the opportunity for people to have potentially 100 percent ownership,” said Gould.

“It depends on the capabilities they can bring both in terms of finance and operation delivery.”

The ECB’s director of business operations Vikram Banerjee said while he had spoken to IPL owners about the Hundred, he was also open to offers from American Football’s NFL.

“I’ve now met and spoken to, a number of times, all the IPL owners and WPL (Women’s Premier League) owners that don’t overlap and there is interest there, from what they’ve told me, which is fantastic and lends into a very exciting process,” Banerjee said.

“I would really hope we have a level of partnerships with some IPL teams, I think that would be brilliant. They have done a great job and know cricket very well.”

He added: “At the same time, we’ve just sent out a document and video to some NFL owners that explains what cricket is and what the rules are.

“In terms of fan engagement, how they can build stadia experience and bring in the next generation, those guys are amazing.

“So, we can bring that blend together, which I think is what we hope to do and that can work really well.”

Irfan Pathan furious over England players leaving IPL for Pakistan series

Former Indian pacer Irfan Pathan has lashed out at England players over their early exit from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) to partake in the T20I series against Pakistan.

Pathan took to his official X account and criticised English players, urging them to complete their full commitment. “Either be available for full season or don’t come!” Irfan Pathan posted.

Prior to Pathan, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar also echoed similar sentiments, demanding the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take action and penalise the players for pulling off from the playoff stages of the IPL.

“I am all for players choosing country before anything else but having assured various franchises about their availability for the full season, if they pull out now, it will be letting down the franchises which probably pay them more money in one IPL season which they don’t earn in a few seasons with their country,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid Day.

“The franchises should not only be allowed to deduct a substantial amount from the fee that the player was bought for but also not give the Board, to which the player belongs, the stated 10 per cent commission of the fee that each player gets.”

England are set to play a four-match T20I series against Pakistan, starting from May 22 at Headingley.

Joe Root joins Ben Stokes in skipping IPL 2024

England batter Joe Root has pulled out of next year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), joining his red-ball skipper Ben Stokes in sitting out the glitzy Twenty20 tournament.

Root, who had made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals earlier this year, opted out a day before the deadline for franchises to announce their releases and retentions ahead of the auction on December 19.

“Joe Root has opted out of IPL 2024. The dressing room will miss you, Rooty,” Royals said late Saturday in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Root became the second player from England to opt out of the IPL after Stokes announced his withdrawal last week in order to manage his workload and fitness.

Royals said in a statement on their website that they “respect” Root’s decision.

“Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him,” said Kumar Sangakkara, Royals’ director of cricket.

“His energy around the group and the experience he brought to the Royals will be missed. We respect his decision totally and wish him success in everything he does.”

Root was signed up by the Royals for his base price of $121,000 in the IPL auction this year.

He played three games but batted in just one, scoring 10 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Jaipur.

The IPL remains the most popular and lucrative Twenty20 league in the world.

But it is a lengthy and demanding tournament, posing a risk of injury, fatigue and burnout for players who face an increasingly packed international schedule.

Ben Stokes pulls out of IPL 2024 due to workload management

England’s Test captain and star all-rounder Ben Stokes has decided to withdraw from the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 to manage his workload and fitness.

In a statement, released by Stokes’ IPL franchise Chennai Super League, the former champions said that they were “supportive of Ben in his decision”.

“England Test captain, all-rounder Ben Stokes has made himself unavailable for IPL 2024 to manage his workload and fitness,” stated Super Kings.

“Stokes, 32, became a part of the Super Kings ahead of the successful IPL 2023.

“He recently participated in the ODI World Cup 2023, which he came out of retirement for.

“The Chennai Super Kings management is supportive of Ben in his decision to manage his workload with England playing a 5-Test series in India before the IPL and then the T20 World Cup in June 2024.”

However, Super Kings did not confirm whether they will release Ben Stokes.

Notably, the deadline to announce the retentions and releases for the 2024 edition of the IPL is November 26.

Meanwhile, if the franchise does not release the English all-rounder, there is a possibility that they will retain him and keep him ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2025.

Stokes has been nursing a chronic knee issue and has announced that he will undergo surgery on his left knee after the World Cup to ensure that he will attain full fitness before the India tour next year in January where England are scheduled to play a five-match series.

Ben Stokes, who was the most expensive purchase for the Super Kings at INR 16.25 crore, featured in only two fixtures for the eventual champions. He scored 15 runs and bowled just one over that went for 18 runs.

Stokes fitness doubt in latest England Ashes scare

NEW DELHI: England Test captain Ben Stokes is still unable to bowl and is only “batting cover”, his coach at IPL side Chennai Super Kings says, in a fresh injury scare weeks before the Ashes.

Stokes has played only two matches after being bought by Chennai for $1.96 million at the start of this season in early April, before being benched with a toe injury.

The 31-year-old all-rounder was troubled by his left knee before the IPL.

On April 21, Chennai coach Stephen Fleming said that Stokes had suffered “another little setback”, without giving details.

On Sunday Fleming said that Stokes was still unable to bowl and reports suggest the player will return to Britain after Chennai’s final group game at the weekend, even though the team looks set for the next round.

“Ben’s ability to bowl overs at the moment is still a bit of a challenge, but he’s there as that batting cover,” Fleming said.

“But with Moeen (Ali) bowling well in good conditions — we go to Delhi (next), which has been turning — we think the balance of the side has been right.”

The former New Zealand captain added: “And look, we’re second on the table, so it’s not our style to chop and change just because we’ve had a loss where things didn’t go our way.”

It is the latest blow to England’s Ashes plans after fast bowler Jofra Archer pulled out of the IPL with injury last week.

There are also concerns over James Anderson.

England host Ireland for a one-off Test starting June 1 ahead of the crunch Australia series, which begins in Birmingham on June 16.

Delhi Capitals overseas players’ bats, kits stolen amid IPL: Indian Media

NEW DELHI: A shocking burglary hit the ongoing cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) as bats, pads and other equipment of Delhi Capitals’ players were stolen from their kit bags, Hindustan Times reported on Wednesday.

According to the details, the items went missing during the Capitals’ travel from Bengaluru to New Delhi via transit and the players found out about the development once their kit bags were delivered to the rooms.

The majority of the items stolen were bats – David Warner and Phil Salt lost three each and Mitchell Marsh two. India youngster Yash Dhull, however, was a victim of five stolen bats.

The issue was flagged and a complaint has been raised over the same. Some bats of certain overseas players cost around about 0.34m PKR each while total equipment was worth 5.4m PKR.

Besides bats, a number of cricketers also had their shoes, gloves and more stolen.

“All of them were shocked when they heard that everyone had lost something or the other from their kit bags. This is the first time such an incident has happened and the matter was soon raised to the logistics department, police and later at the airport. The investigation is on,” said a DC source.
