England skipper Harry Brook heaps high praise on Jacob Bethell

MUMBAI: Jacob Bethell is going to have “a hell of a career” with England, said captain Harry Brook, after the left-hander’s brilliant 105 on Thursday almost took his side to a record chase against India in the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final.

Bethell hit seven sixes and eight fours as England set about going after India’s mammoth 253-7.

It was only when he was run out off the first ball of the final over that India could finally celebrate, and England finished agonisingly short on 246-7.

That his maiden T20 international century came in the cauldron-like atmosphere provided by 35,000 raucous fans in Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium in a World Cup semi-final made it all the more impressive.

“He’s a phenomenal player,” Brook told reporters. “As we’ve seen tonight in a high-pressure situation against India on their home turf as well, the way that he played that innings there was just phenomenal.”

“He was in his own bubble, and it’s an amazing feeling, you feel like you could hit nearly every ball for six.”

The 22-year-old Bethell came of age in the Ashes in Australia, scoring his maiden Test century in the Sydney Test.

“It was a ridiculous knock. He should be extremely proud of what he’s done tonight and this whole winter,” said Brook.

“He’s going to have a hell of a career with England, and I’m looking forward to hopefully spending a lot of time with him in the future.”

Brook said he backed head coach Brendon McCullum to carry on in charge of England “125 percent”.

McCullum came under fire after England’s Ashes defeat but has made some amends with a T20 World Cup campaign that came so close to reaching the final.

“I’ve said plenty of times he’s the best coach I’ve ever had,” said Brook. “The way that he speaks to everybody, the way that he has, he’s got an aura in the dressing room, everybody looks up to him.”

“The things that he’s done over the four years that he’s taken over have changed English cricket for hopefully the best.”

Harry Brook was taking charge in a global tournament for the first time and said he could not have asked for more from his team as they came so close to upsetting the favourites on their home soil.

“I think we’ve had an amazing campaign, and I said the other day that we’re never out of games, and that’s proven again tonight,” said Brook.

“We were in the game all the way until the last over. I’m just extremely proud of the boys, and all the boys should be extremely proud of themselves as well.”

Jacob Bethell slams maiden ton to leave final Ashes Test on knife edge

SYDNEY: Rock-solid Jacob Bethell plundered a chanceless maiden century on Wednesday as England reeled in Australia, then built a tenuous 119-run lead to leave the fifth and final Ashes Test on a knife-edge.

By stumps on day four at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the tourists were 302-8 with Bethell not out 142 and Matthew Potts yet to score.

The 22-year-old Bethell saved the day after Zak Crawley fell early and veteran Joe Root cheaply, powering to his hundred in style off 162 balls.

But wickets tumbled around him with Harry Brook (42) and Will Jacks (0) removed in the space of three balls by the part-time off-spin of Beau Webster two overs after Bethell reached the landmark.

A calamitous mix-up then saw Jamie Smith (24) run out.

Ben Stokes (1) came in at seven after limping off clutching what appeared to be his groin while bowling the third over of the day, but only lasted five balls with Webster again doing the damage.

England are desperate for another morale-boosting win after victory in the previous Test at Melbourne. Australia lead 3-1 and have already retained the Ashes.

Remarkably, it was not just Bethell’s maiden Test ton but the only one he has scored in red-ball cricket, with his previous best 96 against New Zealand.

Bethell was recalled for Melbourne to replace the under-performing Ollie Pope, scoring a gritty 40 in difficult batting conditions, with the number three position now his to lose.

His exploits came after the hosts were dismissed for 567 before lunch on the back of Travis Head’s 163 and 138 from skipper Steve Smith. That left England chasing a 183-run deficit after their first innings of 384.

They needed a solid start, but chief tormentor Mitchell Starc once again conjured up a first-over breakthrough, his 29th wicket for the series.

The pace spearhead delivered a beautiful inswinger that Crawley misjudged and left, with the ball smacking his pads, and he was out lbw for one.

Fellow opener Ben Duckett was dropped on 38, but failed to capitalise and was bowled by Michael Neser on 42, his highest score in a wretched series.

Root, fresh from his first innings of 160, was terrorised by Starc and Neser. He finally fell lbw after facing 37 balls for his six runs to the relentless Scott Boland, with the 35-year-old trudging off dejected.

But Jacob Bethell proved unmovable. A single off Neser overhauled Australia’s lead soon after tea, and the youngster passed three figures emphatically with a cracking boundary through midwicket.

But Webster then swung the momentum back to Australia with his double strike, trapping Brook lbw before Jacks inexplicably holed out to Cameron Green in the deep.

Jamie Smith’s run-out compounded England’s problems, the wicketkeeper-batter setting off for a single but sent back by Bethell and caught well short by Jake Weatherald’s throw.

Stokes edged Webster to Smith in the slips with Brydon Carse doing the same off Boland on 16.

Earlier, Australia resumed Day 4 at 518-7, with Steve Smith on 129 after his 13th Ashes century and Webster on 42.

Smith flogged Stokes through the covers for a boundary in his first over, while Webster dished out similar treatment to Carse.

But the Australia skipper did not last long, nicking a fuller length delivery from Josh Tongue to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Webster reached a fifth half-century in his eighth Test with a single and put on 20 with Starc before the big paceman was bowled by Tongue for five.

Boland suffered a golden duck to leave Webster unbeaten on 71. Tongue ended with 3-97 and Carse 3-130.

England all-rounder ruled out of Champions Trophy, replacement named

Tom Banton replaced England’s batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Wednesday.

Bethell was part of the three-match ODI series against India. He scored a half-century in the series in which England were beaten comprehensively by the home team.

“England have named Tom Banton as the replacement in the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad for Jacob Bethell, who was ruled out owing to a left hamstring injury,” ICC said in a statement.

Tom Banton, who last played for England in an ODI in August 2020, has been in outstanding form in T20 franchise cricket.

He was the second-highest run-scorer in the UAE ILT20 competition, where he amassed 493 runs from 11 innings at an average of 54.77, including two centuries.

For the unversed, England will kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against Australia in Lahore on February 22 before playing Afghanistan at the same venue four days later.

They will then face South Africa in Karachi on March 1.

The ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy will kick off on 19 February, with host and defending champions Pakistan taking on New Zealand in the curtain-raiser in Karachi’s National Bank Stadium.

The eight-team tournament will consist of 15 matches over 19 days and will take place in Pakistan and Dubai.

In Pakistan, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi will be the three venues to host Champions Trophy 2025 matches. Each Pakistan venue will feature three group games apiece, with Lahore hosting the second semi-final.

England Men call up Tom Banton as cover for third ODI against India

England Men have called up Somerset batter Tom Banton as cover for the third ODI against India in Ahmedabad, which starts on Wednesday.

Warwickshire batting all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who featured in the first ODI defeat in Nagpur, has sustained a left hamstring injury. The injury will be assessed further when the team arrive in Ahmedabad on Monday.

Tom Banton, who last played for England in an ODI in August 2020, has been in outstanding form in T20 franchise cricket. He is currently the leading run-scorer in the UAE ILT20 competition, where he has amassed 493 runs from 11 innings at an average of 54.77, including two centuries.

Banton is set to arrive in India tomorrow (Monday) with a chance to reignite his international career.

Bethell’s injury also leaves England with a dilemma ahead of their opening match in the ICC Champions Trophy against Australia in less than two weeks, with wicket-keeper Jamie Smith still recovering from an injury.

For the unversed, Bethell scored a half-century and took one wicket in the first match. The 21-year-old all-rounder had a successful tour of New Zealand at the end of 2024, scoring three half-centuries at an average of 52.

It is pertinent to mention here, that after hammering England in the five-match T20I series, India registered a commanding win in the first ODI by four wickets courtesy of Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer’s batting.

Chasing 249, Gill scored 87 while Iyer stood firm with his 59 runs which left England in a hole after the visitors opted to bat first.

Uncapped all-rounder named in England squad for New Zealand Tests

England made only one change to their squad, which suffered a 2-1 series defeat against Pakistan as wicketkeeper batter Jamie Smith is expecting the birth of his first child.

“Wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith will miss the tour as he takes paternity leave for the birth of his first child, with Cox in line to take on wicketkeeping duties and the opportunity of winning his first Test cap,” shared ECB in a statement.
