Jannik Sinner tames Lorenzo Musetti to march into US Open semi-finals

Reigning champion Jannik Sinner sailed into the US Open semi-finals on Wednesday with a straight-sets win over 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti.

World number one Sinner swept aside Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the first all-Italian men’s quarter-final in Grand Slam history.

“We have to take the friendship away for the match, and when we shake hands, everything is fine again,” said Sinner, who is 16-0 against Italian players.

“It was a great performance, very solid. I started the match very well.”

He advances to a semi-final against Canadian 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.

“Every player who is in the semis of a Grand Slam can say they’re playing their best tennis,” added Sinner.

Auger-Aliassime has won two of three previous meetings, but Sinner thrashed him for the loss of just two games in Cincinnati last month.

The 24-year-old Sinner also tied Nicola Pietrangeli for the most Grand Slam wins by an Italian man with his 86th victory.

Sinner is aiming to become the first man to successfully defend the US Open crown since Roger Federer won the last of five consecutive titles in 2008.

He has won the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles this season but lost to Carlos Alcaraz in an epic five-set battle in the French Open final.

Sinner sprang out of the blocks and nabbed the first five games against Musetti, bagging the first set in 27 minutes.

The second set was much closer, with a single break chance for both players before Musetti surrendered his serve with a double fault at 4-all.

Sinner pounced for a two-set lead and broke again to begin the third set.

Musetti had his opportunities with four break points in the next game and another two with Sinner serving at 3-2, but he couldn’t find a way through his rival’s defence.

Sinner broke again and wrapped up a commanding win, his 26th in a row at majors played on hard courts.

Carlos Alcaraz defeats Lorenzo Musetti to win Monte Carlo Masters title

Carlos Alcaraz made the best possible start to his preparations for the defence of his French Open title, burning past the Italian Lorenzo Musetti in three sets on Sunday to win his first Monte Carlo Masters.

The 21-year-old Spaniard, already a four-time Grand Slam winner, dropped the opening set but came back hard to take the next two at the cost of a single game as he cleaned up 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, albeit helped by a limping Musetti.

It marks a sixth Masters title for Alcaraz and is his most prestigious title since winning Wimbledon last year.

It was also his first win on clay since winning the French Open last season, although in mitigation, he only had one tournament after that when he missed out on gold at the Paris Olympics.

“I’m just really happy to have won Monte Carlo for the first time,” said Alcaraz, who lost in his first match on his only previous appearance at the tournament in 2022.

“It’s been a really difficult week with a lot of difficult situations.

“I’m really proud of myself and how I’ve dealt with everything. It’s been a really difficult month for me on the court and outside.

“Coming here and seeing how the whole hard work has paid off, I’m really happy.”

Carlos Alcaraz chose not to expand on his difficulties, but they may be eased partly by this win, which will lift him up to No 2 in the world rankings, ahead of Alexander Zverev but still behind the suspended Jannik Sinner.

However, this was no easy win in chilly conditions against a man playing in his first Masters 1000 final after taking down two top 10 players, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur, to get there.

Musetti dropped his opening service but broke back straight away and took the fight to Alcaraz, who, in spite of the odd blissful winner, appeared at odds with his game, making six unforced errors.

The Spaniard bounced back, however, lifting his game as he galloped through the second set 6-1.

That trend continued as Musetti began to have problems with his right leg, receiving treatment when he was 0-3 in the decider.

He battled on but could not live with the intensity or physicality of Alcaraz’s game.

“It is not the way I would have wanted to win a match,” said Carlos Alcaraz. “Lorenzo’s been through a really tough week, long and intense matches.”

“I feel sorry for him, one of the best results he has done. To end like this is not easy. Hopefully it’s not serious and he’s 100 percent soon.”

Some consolation for Musetti is a rise to No 11 in the rankings and the promise of more to come on the clay as the season gets underway.

“It was probably one of my best tournaments so far,” said Musetti, who took bronze at last year’s Olympics behind Alcaraz and gold medallist Novak Djokovic.

“I’m disappointed I couldn’t finish the match in the best way, for the crowd. You deserve it so I will keep going and try and come back for revenge.”

Both Carlos Alcaraz and Musetti will continue their clay court preparations at the Barcelona Open next week in the build-up to the French Open at the end of May.

Novak Djokovic eases past Musetti to set up Wimbledon final with Alcaraz

Novak Djokovic swept past Lorenzo Musetti on Friday to book a second successive Wimbledon final against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and move one win away from a record-setting 25th Grand Slam title.

Just five weeks after undergoing knee surgery, seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic reached his 10th final at the All England Club with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 win over the Italian 25th seed.

Alcaraz earlier defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-7 (1/7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to reach a fourth Grand Slam final.

Novak Djokovic, 37, can equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles and become the tournament’s oldest champion of the modern era if he avenges last year’s dramatic five-set final loss to Carlos Alcaraz.

The last time Novak Djokovic and Musetti met was at the French Open in June when the Serb claimed victory in a third-round tie which ended at 3:07 in the morning.

On Friday, however, Djokovic was untroubled on his way to a 37th Grand Slam final.

He broke for 4-2 lead in the opener and, despite surrendering the advantage and letting two set points slip in the ninth game, he broke again in the 10th to claim the set.

The second seed was playing in his 49th Grand Slam semi-final while the 22-year-old Musetti was in his first.

That experience was key as Djokovic hit back from losing serve in the opening game of the second set to level in the sixth before dominating the tie-break.

A break in the opening game of the third set launched him on his way to victory against a demoralised Musetti, who at least had the consolation of saving three match points before Novak Djokovic completed his progress to yet another Wimbledon final.

Lorenzo Musetti sets up Wimbledon semi-final duel with Djokovic

Lorenzo Musetti reached his first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon on Wednesday with a five-set victory over Taylor Fritz, setting up a clash with seven-time champion Novak Djokovic.

Italian 25th seed Musetti triumphed 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 against the 13th-seeded American.

Djokovic was earlier handed a free pass into a 13th Wimbledon semi-final when Alex de Minaur withdrew from their scheduled last-eight tie with a hip injury.

“I probably played my best tennis at the end today,” said Musetti.

Djokovic has a 5-1 winning record over 22-year-old Musetti, including a come-from-behind five-set victory at the French Open last month.

Lorenzo Musetti also took Novak Djokovic the distance in their first meeting at Roland Garros in 2021, when the Italian won the opening two sets of their last-16 tie before injury scuppered his hopes in the decider.

“Djokovic knows the stadiums here better than me,” said Musetti.

“He’s a legend everywhere and has done unthinkable things. We’ve played lots of times and I expect a huge fight.

“It’s the toughest challenge in tennis but I am an ambitious guy and I like to be challenged. I will give 100 percent.”

On Wednesday, Musetti came back from dropping the first set for the third time at Wimbledon this year after Fritz broke in the fourth game.

The Italian, who plays with a one-handed backhand, levelled on a fourth set point in the second set tie-break and was dominant in the third, breaking the American in the first and fifth games.

Fritz had come back from two sets down to knock out Alexander Zverev in the last 16 but showed no sign of immediately wilting, levelling the contest in the fourth set.

However, Lorenzo Musetti was undaunted, sweeping into a 5-0 lead in the decider on his way to victory.

Tsitsipas roars back to thump Musetti in the first round of the French Open

PARIS: The Greek Tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas engineered his third comeback from two sets down to edge past his Italian opponent Lorenzo Musetti in the first round of the ongoing French Open on Tuesday.

The fourth-seeded Greek started well but had to dig deep in the end for a 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Musetti.

The finalist of the recently concluded Italian Open produced another exceptional comeback in the opening round of the French Open. The Greek has previously made two exceptional comebacks against Jaume Munar in September 2020 and against the Spaniard Rafael Nadal at the 2021 Australian Open.

For the second time at the French Open, Musetti, 20, had a tournament favourite on the verge of elimination. In the fourth round of the 2021 tournament, he won two tie-breaks to take control of the match against then-champion Novak Djokovic, but he lost the momentum late in the match.

Musetti, on this occasion, gave Tsitsipas more scare by recovering from an early break in the fourth set, but he never got close to a knockout punch.

With this victory, Tsitsipas advances to face Czech qualifier Zdenek Kolar, who defeated France’s Lucas Pouille 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 earlier on Tuesday.
