Jansen takes six as South Africa close on Test series win over India

GUWAHATI: Towering pacer Marco Jansen took six wickets to put South Africa in sight of a first Test series win in India in 25 years after bundling out the hosts for 201 in the second match on Monday.

Replying to South Africa’s 489, India were 288 behind in their first innings, but the tourists did not enforce the follow-on and decided to bat again on day three in Guwahati.

After winning the first Test in the two-match series in Kolkata, South Africa are closing on a first series win in India since Hansie Cronje’s team triumphed in 2000.

India are under massive pressure once more, having suffered their fourth defeat in six Tests at home in the first match.

A dominant South Africa reached 26-0 at stumps to extend their lead to 314 in the second innings.

Left-handed Ryan Rickelton, on 13, and Aiden Markram, on 12, were batting when bad light ended the day’s play in the northeastern city, where the sun sets early.

Jansen, a left-arm quick, claimed his fourth five-wicket Test haul before wrapping up the Indian innings with his sixth strike of the day in the final session.

India slumped to 122-7 despite Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 58 as wickets kept tumbling on what still seems like a good pitch to bat on.

Washington Sundar, who made 48, and fellow left-hander Kuldeep Yadav resisted in a partnership of 72 off 208 balls before off-spinner Simon Harmer struck to end Sundar’s defiance.

Jansen then dismissed Kuldeep for 19 and Jasprit Bumrah for two to pack a shell-shocked India off in under three sessions.

Earlier, the left-handed Jaiswal lost overnight partner KL Rahul for 22 in the first hour of play before reaching his 13th Test half-century.

Jaiswal used the sweep to good effect and took on the bowlers, hitting seven fours and one six until his departure off Harmer.

Harmer had Sai Sudharsan caught at mid-wicket for 15, and Jansen removed Dhruv Jurel for a duck to further put India on the back foot at the first break.

The 6ft 8 in (2.03 metres) tall Jansen, who made 93 in South Africa’s imposing first-innings total, used the bouncer to snare the Indian batters with Jurel falling to the pull off a short ball.

Skipper Rishabh Pant fell caught behind for seven to Jansen soon after in the second session, and the batting fell apart like nine pins.

Aiden Markram took a stunning catch as he ran from second slip to take a one-handed diving catch to his right to dismiss Nitish Kumar Reddy off Jansen. Reddy made 10.

“South Africa’s chokers tag is out the window,” says Marco Jansen

Young pacer Marco Jansen believes that South Africa have dispelled the “chokers” tag with their sensational run in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The Proteas, led by Aiden Markram, are unstoppable in the ongoing mega event as they are the only side to win all the matches they have played thus far.

South Africa held their nerves calm and emerged triumphant in close encounters against England and Nepal.

For the unversed, South Africa are often labelled as “chokers” in world cricket, due to their inability to go past the semi-finals stage in any Men’s Cricket World Cup and also because of losing high-stakes matches.

Meanwhile, Marco Jansen highlighted the team’s current form changed that label as they got over the line in some tense matches which, according to him, most of the teams could not replicate.

“I’m too young, I don’t believe in that any more. For the guys that have been playing a long time, for them to change that narrative or thinking when it comes to this team is very good,” said Jansen.

“In terms of the chokers label, I’m glad we changed that a little bit in this World Cup. The games that we’ve played in this World Cup, not a lot of teams would have got over the line,” he added.

Marco Jansen played a pivotal role in South Africa’s first-ever victory in a semi-final with brilliant bowling figures of 3/16 in 1.5 overs and was adjudged the Player of the Match.

“We weren’t sure how the wicket was going to play. We were happy to get one wicket in the first over, and then by the time I got my third we saw how the wicket was playing,” said Jansen.

“Going into this final we’re going to give it our best, and whatever happens, happens.”

It is worth mentioning here that South Africa outclassed Afghanistan by nine wickets in the first semi-final to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 final, scheduled on June 29.

Marco Jansen named ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2022

DUBAI: South Africa’s bowling prodigy Marco Jansen has been named ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year for 2022.

Jansen claimed the prestigious award as she overpowered India’s Arshdeep Singh, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran and New Zealand’s Finn Allen – the other three nominees in the category.

“Sizzling displays with the ball and vital contributions with the bat at crucial moments – the winner of the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year Award had an unforgettable 2022,” said ICC as it revealed the winner of the award on Wednesday.

During his meteoric rise last year, Jansen picked up 36 wickets in nine Tests and accumulated 234 runs at 21.27. The right-arm pacer also took two wickets in ODIs, and one in T20Is.

His memorable performance of the year came against England at The Oval when he first struck a fighting 30 in South Africa’s paltry total of 118 before claiming his maiden five-wicket haul, which included the wickets of Joe Root and Harry Brook.

Jansen’s heroics lead Sunrisers to close win over MI Cape Town in SA20

CAPE TOWN: Marco Jansen played a match-winning knock of 66 from 27 balls to steer Sunrisers Eastern Cape to a sensational two-wicket win over MI Cape Town in the SA20, here on Wednesday.

Set to chase 172, Jansen led the charge as he smashed seven sixes and three fours during his blistering knock and took his side to command before he was bowled out by Rabada in the 19th over.

Tailenders Roelof van der Merwe and Sisanda Magala, however, held their nerves strong to reach the finishing line with five runs left to chase in the final over.

Jansen was a standout among the Sunsriser’s batters besides a useful contribution from Tristan Stubbs, who made 28 from 21, too as the rest of the batting line was effectively dislodged with intermittent wickets by the fierce MI pace attack.

Earlier, Grant Roelofsen scored 36-ball 56 while stitching an astounding 102-run partnership with Ryan Rickelton, who made 46 off 36, to help MI Cape Town reach a competitive total of 171/6 after they were put to bat.

Roelofsen and Rickelton anchored Cape Town’s innings after they faced an early blow in the second over when Sisanda Magala removed opener Dewald Brewis.

However, the alarms went off after the breakthrough wicket of Rickelton in the 14th over off van der Merwe, who then hunted Roelofsen three deliveries later.

Delano Potgieter and Odean Smith brought some sanity to the MI Cape Town’s order after it lost five quick wickets between the 14th and 17th overs.
Potgieter made 21 from 13 while Smith contributed 25 from 13 in the final phase of MI Cape Town’s innings.
