Mohammad Hafeez expresses concern over Sahibzada Farhan’s technique

Former Pakistan captain and team director Mohammad Hafeez has opened up about the flaw in the batting technique of Lahore Qalandars’ opening batter Sahibzada Farhan.

The right-handed batter scored a mere two runs in 12 balls during his side’s match against Islamabad United in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9.

Islamabad United opted to bowl first and Naseem Shah bowled a brilliant maiden first over, which saw Farhan struggling against Shah’s swinging deliveries.

He continued to struggled during his brief stay at the crease before Hunain Shah sent him back to the pavillion.

Hafeez, during the A-Sports show ‘The Pavilion,’ pointed out the flaw in Farhan’s batting technique, resulting in his dismal performance in the match.

“He looked pretty uncomfortable while facing the first over, despite being an opener. He has this recurring issue of struggling against the swinging new ball,” said Hafeez.

“He is a great product and had a great season, but he needs to work on this issue. He needs to play the new ball with more control, otherwise, the top-class new-ball bowlers will keep challenging him,” he added.

Former captain Wasim Akram, also echoed the similar concerns over Sahibzada Farhan’s batting technique.

“The ball was seaming little bit and no doubt Naseem [Shah] bowled well, but Sahibzada [Farhan] looked clueless as if he has never played swing bowling,” said Akram.

Notably, Farhan is the fifth highest run-scorer in the PSL 9 with 241 runs in seven matches at a strike-rate of 136.15.

Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars claimed their first victory in the PSL 9 yesterday by defeating Islamabad United by 17 runs.

Zaman Khan’s four-wicket haul after Rassie van der Dussen’s gutsy half-century helped the defending champions end their winless streak in this season.

Wasim Akram, Mohammad Hafeez open up about players’ activities during rain break

Former captains Wasim Akram and Mohammad Hafeez opened up about players’ activities in the dressing during the rain break.

Akram, while responding to a question in the A-Sports show ‘The Pavilion,’ shed light on what players used to do in rain break during his playing days.

“I am not aware of the mindset now but phones are not allowed inside the dressing room and players usually talk during the break,” he said. “In my playing days, we used to play cards or some other games.”

Hafeez, who recently served as the director of Pakistan’s men’s cricket team, reflected on the reasons for not allowing phones in the dressing room and shared what players generally do inside the dressing room during rain break.

“I think it is good [to not allow phones in the dressing room] for the game and also for the players to stay away from the hurdles of Anti-Corruption,” the former all-rounder said.

“There is a bit of frustration [during rain] because as a player, you always want to have a game. It is tough when the break is longer but if it is short, mostly they talk with each other and have a cup of coffee or tea,” he added.

The discussion was followed by two washed-out matches in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

The bottom-ranked Lahore Qalandars was slated to square off against Peshawar Zalmi, while the home team Islamabad United was set to face Quetta Gladiators.

Mohammad Hafeez responds to Azam Khan’s comments

Former captain Mohammad Hafeez has recently opened up about the comments made by wicket-keeper Azam Khan about not getting clarity and confidence from the national team management.

Azam Khan made his comeback to the national team last month in the T20I series against New Zealand during Hafeez’s tenure as the team director.

However, the explosive batter failed to leave a lasting impression, scoring 22 runs in the first three matches before getting dropped from the last two matches.

Later, Azam Khan, in an interview with International League T20 (ILT20) franchise Desert Vipers, had expressed his reservations regarding his selection in the Pakistan team by lamenting on being made to play a handful of fixtures instead of a full series.

“I have always understood that when I play league cricket, I get a complete opportunity because they know I can win them games, so they are calling me here,” said Khan.

“That means either you [Pakistan coaches] are putting doubts in my mind that I am not good at this level, then it’s okay, then I will find my own way,” the wicket-keeper added.

Mohammad Hafeez, while responding to Azam Khan’s comments in the A-Sports show ‘The Pavilion,’ stated that he backed the young batter’s talent but also mentioned that he would have to work on his fitness.

“I promise you that I gave him total confidence. He was totally looked after and given clarity. Even after he couldn’t perform, I told him that I would look after him and he wouldn’t be forgotten,” Hafeez claimed.

The former all-rounder also addressed Azam Khan’s comments that franchise teams gave him more chances to showcase his talent.

“Franchises pick only four foreign players and give you ten games, even if you fail to perform. However, if you don’t perform in international cricket, you will face the pressure as there are guys waiting to take your place.”

Pat Cummins reacts to Mohammad Hafeez’s ‘better than the other team’ remarks

MELBOURNE: Australia’s captain Pat Cummins to Pakistan Cricket Team Director Mohammad Hafeez remarks regarding the better team of the Boxing Day Test.

The enthralling Boxing Day Test between Pakistan and Australia concluded on the fourth day when Pakistan, in pursuit of 317, bundled out on 237 in the second innings.

The touring side was at one stage in a comfortable position to seal a historic victory when they required a further 100 runs with five wickets in hand.

However, Mohammad Rizwan’s debated dismissal off Pat Cummins opened the floodgates for Pakistan and they collapsed from 219/5 to 237 all out.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Cricket Team Director Mohammad Hafeez not only criticized the umpiring in the Boxing Day Test but also claimed that the touring side played “better than the other team”.

“The whole game, I will sum up, our Pakistan team played better than the other team in general,” stated Hafeez.

Later in the post-match press conference, Pat Cummins reacted to Mohammad Hafeez’s remarks and highlighted the end result with a witty smile.

“Ahhhh. Cool. They played well. I am glad we got the win,” stated Cummins.

“It doesn’t really matter, does it? It is the team who wins at the end,” he added.

For the unversed, Australia took an unassailable 2-0 lead over Pakistan in the three-match Test series with a 79-run victory in the second Test.

The two sides will now square off in the third Test in Sydney, scheduled to commence on January 3.

Mohammad Hafeez reveals Rizwan’s reaction on controversial dismissal

MELBOURNE: Pakistan Cricket Team Director Mohammad Hafeez revealed his conversation with wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan, following the latter’s debated dismissal in the second Test against Australia.

Australian captain Pat Cummins bowled a sharp-rising delivery to Mohammad Rizwan, followed by an appeal for a caught behind.

The on-field umpire turned down Australia’s appeal but their captain Cummins opted to challenge the decision as he believed that Mohammad Rizwan may have gloved the ball.

TV Umpire Richard Illingworth thoroughly analyzed the appeal from different camera angles and was later convinced by the spike that appeared when the ball passed by Rizwan’s wristband and asked the on-field umpire to revert his decision.

The HotSpot showed no mark of contact as Rizwan looked away from the ball at the last second.

Mohammad Rizwan, however, appeared confident that he did not glove the ball and expressed his frustration with the TV Umpire’s decision before walking back to the pavilion in disappointment.

Pakistan’s hopes of pulling off a record victory were all lying on Rizwan’s shoulder, who was unbeaten on 35 with the touring side needing a further 98 runs.

Meanwhile, Pakistan team’s Director Mohammad Hafeez at the post-match conference brought his conversation with Mohammad Rizwan to the limelight and echoed the latter’s stance.

“I spoke to Rizwan, and I believe he is a very honest person. He told me that the ball did not touch anywhere near the gloves, and there should be conclusive evidence to overturn the decision of the on-field umpire,” stated Hafeez.

“Based on what I know, the umpire gave it not out, and there was no conclusive evidence for the decision to be overturned. I don’t know what more to say. In this instance, the technology turned out to be a curse rather than something helpful,” he added.

It is worth mentioning here that Rizwan’s dismissal sparked a match-defining collapse as Pakistan slipped from 219/5 to 237 all out and thus lost the match by 70 runs against Australia, who now lead the three-match series 2-0.

Mohammad Hafeez backs Sarfaraz Ahmed after dismal performance in Perth Test

PERTH: Pakistan’s team director Mohammad Hafeez backed wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Ahmed amid criticism following the latter’s dismal performance in the first Test against Australia.

Sarfaraz Ahmed had a forgettable outing in Perth as he scored a total of seven runs in two innings.

However, Hafeez defended the wicketkeeper saying that he was excellent in the last series and has served Pakistan with great performances in past.

“Sarfaraz has given a lot of performances for Pakistan. In the New Zealand series in Pakistan, he was excellent. Unfortunately, this match didn’t go well for Sarfaraz according to our expectations,” Hafeez said in the post-match press conference.

“However, we can’t start thinking something totally different after one match. Sarfaraz isn’t new – he has toured Australia, South Africa, and England before.”

Hafeez stressed the fact that the management cannot drop a player over the performance of just one match.

“Yes, he didn’t perform up to expectations as a batsman and keeper. But this doesn’t mean that we should start doubting someone’s skill and saying they can only play in certain conditions,” he concluded.

Notably, Australia are currently leading the Test series 1-0 after thumping Pakistan by a huge margin of 360 runs in the first Test match at Perth Stadium.

Australian bowlers bowled the Pakistan team for a meagre 89 runs in the second innings after setting a mammoth target of 450 runs to register a dominant victory.

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was adjudged man-of-the-match for his brilliant performance in both innings with scores of 90 and 63* as well as one wicket in the first innings.

Pakistan and Australia will square off in the second Test match of the three-match Test series at Melbourne Cricket Ground, which is scheduled to start on December 26.

Mohammad Hafeez expresses disappointment over slow wicket in Canberra

PERTH: Pakistan Men’s Team director Mohammad Hafeez on Monday expressed his disappointment over the slow wicket in Canberra for Pakistan’s four-day practice match against the Australian Prime Minister’s XI.

The four-day match was played at Manuka Oval last week and ended in a draw after the last day was called off due to bad weather.

Addressing the media after Pakistan’s first practice session in Perth, Hafeez said, “I was surprised and disappointed at the four-day match surface offered at Canberra. It was a slow wicket that might be part of Australia’s strategy, but we are still fully ready for the series.”

Hafeez also stated that the Pakistan team is ready for the Test series challenge against Australia and vowed that they are not here to compete but to beat Australia.

Hafeez stated, “This Pakistan Test team is well settled and they have done well for the country in the past. It is heartening to see that these guys are excited to take on challenges and doing well in Australia will be a top priority.”

On the excitement to face Australia, Hafeez expressed confidence in beating the home team and said that Pakistan have enough talent to do that.

“We have ticked most of the boxes in our training. Everyone on the team is excited to showcase their ability and eager to win. Unfortunately, Abrar Ahmed is unfit but everyone else is fit and ready to take on Australia.”

Hafeez also talked about Nathan Lyon’s return to Australia’s Test team.

“Lyon is a great bowler. He has won Test matches for his team but we generally play off-spin well and we have scored a lot of runs against him in the last few series. I hope our batters will do well against him in this series as well.”

The first Test match between Pakistan and Australia will start at Perth Stadium on 14 December.
