‘Mind-boggling decision,’ Pakistan cricketer questions Faheem’s selection over Hasnain

Pakistan top-order batter Ahmed Shehzad has questioned the decision to play all-rounder Faheem Ashraf instead of fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain in the tri-nation ODI series final against New Zealand.

The Kiwi side outclassed Pakistan in the tri-nation series final as they chased the 243-run target at the loss of five wickets with 28 balls to spare at the newly renovated National Bank Stadium in Karachi on Friday.

After the loss, Ahmed Shehzad took to his official YouTube channel and criticised Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan’s decision to bat first.

“Pakistan’s bubble has burst ahead of the Champions Trophy,” said Shehzad.

“It was a mind-boggling decision [to bat first] because we had seen in the previous match that the pitch becomes better for batting at night.

“The ball doesn’t grip the surface for spinners. Still, the Pakistan team decided to bat first. Brainless decision—no clue.”

The 33-year-old also slammed the team selection, criticising the ‘safe’ approach to strengthen batting at the expense of a specialist pacer.

“Pakistan captain wants to play safe with batting—whether it’s being a spinner short in the Champions Trophy squad or, in this match,” he stated.

“Playing [bowling all-rounder] Faheem Ashraf to strengthen the batting lineup at the expense of [fast bowler] Mohammad Hasnain, yet still using Ashraf for just two overs.

“In a final, you are making childish decisions… making so many mistakes in matches. You get a chance to win only when the opposition performs below par or doesn’t have their main players available.”

PCB provides update on Mohammad Hasnain’s recovery

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday, provided an update on Mohammad Hasnain’s rehabilitation, stating that the right-arm pacer was “showing signs of improvement”.

Mohammad Hasnain sustained an ankle injury during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in August and has been out of action since then.

He then travelled to England from Sri Lanka and had an MRI. The scans revealed the fast bowler requires rehabilitation for his ankle, which has been under process since 13 September in England.

Meanwhile, the PCB shared the latest development regarding Mohammad Hasnain on X, formerly Twitter, asserting that he is expected to recover in two weeks.

“Mohammad Hasnain is expected to recover in two weeks’ time after showing signs of improvement in his ongoing rehabilitation for his ankle injury,” PCB Media wrote.

“The 23-year-old fast bowler sustained the injury while playing in the Sri Lanka Premier League in August,” the statement added.

For the unversed, Mohammad Hasnain is one of the three injured Pakistan pacers, alongside Naseem Shah and Ihsanullah, who are also recovering from their respective injuries.

Last week, the PCB also provided an update on Naseem and Ihsanullah’s injury status.

Ihsanullah, who has featured for Pakistan in one ODI and four T20Is, suffered an elbow injury. The 20-year-old has been ruled out from international cricket since playing for Pakistan in the ODI series against New Zealand at home this year in April.

PCB shared that the lanky pacer underwent surgery here in the first week of September and was placed in an elbow brace for four weeks.

“Ihsanullah had to undergo surgery in a private hospital in Lahore. A doctor was flown in from England to operate Ihsanullah in the first week of September,” PCB stated.

“After the operation, the fast bowler was placed in an elbow brace for four weeks, with a doctor and physio attending him on a daily basis.

“His condition is satisfactory and the brace will be removed at the end of fifth week. Afterwards, he will proceed with rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.”

Pakistan’s first-choice pacer Naseem Shah was ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2023 in India due to a shoulder injury, which he sustained during the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023.

He was then replaced by experienced pacer Hasan Ali in Pakistan’s squad for the World Cup.

“20-year-old Naseem got injured during Asia Cup, ruling him out of the ICC World Cup 2023,” PCB stated.

“Following the injury, the fast bowler underwent shoulder surgery earlier last week. During the operation, he remained absolutely stable and was discharged from the hospital the next day.

“He will be attended by two physiotherapists for his rehabilitation initially at the hospital and also later at the training ground and gym.

“During this entire period, he will be continuously monitored and the doctor who operated on him will see him again in the third week of October.”

Stoinis accuses Hasnain of chucking after getting out in The Hundred

LONDON: Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis sparked controversy on Sunday as he seemingly accused the Pakistan young gun Mohammad Hasnain of chucking amid the 14th match of The Hundred 2022.

In the first inning of the match between Southern Braves and Oval Invincibles, the latter’s speedster Hasnain banged in at 88mph; leaving Stoinis to slice it to the mid-wicket, who managed to score 37 off 27 deliveries, laced with two boundaries and two sixes.

Stoinis, who top scored for the Braves, mimicked Hasnain’s bowling action and took a not-so-subtle jab at the 22-year-old, who had his action reported earlier this year during the Big Bash League (BBL).

Hasnain was found guilty of having an illegal bowling action and was suspended from bowling earlier this year after umpire Gerard Abood reported it in the BBL match between Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers on January 2.

Following the suspension, the 22-year-old rectified his bowling action under the supervision of the National High-Performance Centre (NHPC) bowling coach Umar Rasheed.

In May, the right-arm pacer underwent a bowling action test at a local laboratory in Lahore. After which Hasnain was deemed clear and received a green signal for playing competitive cricket.

Here’s how the cricket fraternity reacted:

Hasnain joins Worcestershire for the remainder of County Championship

WORCESTER: Pakistan’s right-arm pacer Mohammad Hasnain has joined the Worcestershire County Cricket Club for the remainder of the ongoing County Championship 2022.

Hasnain, who successfully rectified his bowling action after it was deemed illegal following his incredible run in the Big Bash League 2022, has received major confidence booster with his latest signing as the right-arm pacer is set to join the Worcestershire for the final six fixtures of the ongoing tournament.

According to Worcestershire, the 22-year-old will make his county championship debut on July 11 against Middlesex.

On his signing with Worcestershire, the young pacer claimed he is overjoyed and is looking forward to helping his team win matches and most importantly to gain valuable experience in playing first-class cricket.

“I’m really looking forward to my first taste of county cricket. I want to help Worcestershire win matches first and foremost, but I also want to play more first-class cricket, and this is an ideal opportunity,” Worcestershire quoted Hasnain.

“It will also be part of my cricketing education playing in England on different pitches,” he concluded.

It is pertinent to mention here that the right-arm pacer has represented Pakistan in 26 internationals; including 18 T20Is and eight ODIs. He will also be seen in action for the Oval Invincibles in the forthcoming second edition of The Hundred, scheduled in August.

Oval Invincibles pick Mohammad Hasnain for The Hundred 2022

LONDON: The Hundred’s franchise Oval Invincibles have selected Pakistan’s right-arm pacer, Mohammad Hasnain as the Overseas Wildcard pick for the upcoming second edition.

Hasnain, who was reported for an illegal bowling action during his brief stint for the Sydney Thunders in this year’s Big Bash League (BBL), has been picked by The Hundred’s franchise Oval Invincibles after clearing his bowling action today.

The young pacer’s bowling was declared legal by Cricket Australia (CA)’s independent experts today as the former underwent remodelling of his action at ICC’s accredited centre in Lahore.

Following this, Hasnain is set to be in action again as the right-arm pacer will represent Oval Invincibles in The Hundred 2022.

“I’m overjoyed. The Hundred looked like great fun last year and I can’t wait to get involved. The opportunity to play alongside stars like Sunil Narine, Jason Roy and the Curran brothers is hugely exciting,” Hasnain stated.

Apart from the Pakistani pacer, Welsh Fire and Birmingham Pheonix have selected big names such as Imran Tahir and Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad in their wildcard picks.
