The stage for the post-match ceremony was not set for an extended period. At last, the stage was set up with Mohsin Naqvi and other dignitaries taking their place.

Mohsin Naqvi to pay Haris Rauf’s fine personally: sources

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi has reportedly taken the unusual step of personally covering the fine imposed on pacer Haris Rauf by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following disciplinary action in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025.

Rauf was docked 30% of his match fee after being found guilty of making inappropriate gestures toward Indian fans during Pakistan’s Super Four clash against India.

Sources confirmed that Naqvi, in a show of support, has pledged to pay not only Rauf’s fine but also any future ICC-imposed penalties on Pakistani players from his own funds.

The ICC conducted hearings on Friday into incidents involving Haris Rauf and top-order batter Sahibzada Farhan.

While Rauf was penalised financially, Farhan escaped with only a formal warning after celebrating his half-century with a “gunfire gesture” using his bat.

Match referee Richie Richardson deemed the action inappropriate but not warranting a monetary penalty.

Disciplinary action was not confined to Pakistan’s camp. India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was also fined 30% of his match fee for post-match remarks laced with political undertones.

His comments referencing the armed forces drew a sharp reaction from the PCB, which argued that the remarks went beyond the spirit of the game and urged the ICC to consider a Level 4 sanction, the most serious category of offence under its code.

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Wednesday said that the ‘nation’s honour is preserved’ after Zimbabwean match referee Andy Pycroft apologised to Pakistan cricket team manager and captain.

Addressing the media in a press conference alongside former PCB chairmen Ramiz Raja and Najam Sethi, Naqvi emphasized that cricket must remain free from politics, stressing that the game should not be turned into a political platform.

“Our focus should be on cricket, not politics. Sports and politics cannot go hand in hand; let’s keep cricket as a sport only,” Naqvi said.

“I consulted with former chairmen Najam Sethi and Ramiz Raja regarding the situation. Thank God, Pakistan’s honour has been preserved, and now we expect the team to perform at their best,” he added.

Former PCB chairman Najam Sethi echoed Naqvi’s views, stating that cricket has won.

“Our stance has always been that politics should not interfere in sports. This has been our clear position from the start. Cricket has won, and we must continue the game. We accepted the apology in the spirit of sportsmanship.”

Ramiz Raja, meanwhile, called it a victory for Pakistan, stressing on team performance.

“This is a victory for Pakistan. Whatever emotions were hurt, the focus now must be on team performance. Cricket should remain cricket, not a political platform. Now everyone’s attention should be on cricket; the team must deliver on the field,” Raja stated.

For context, match referee Andy Pycroft apologised before the toss of Pakistan-UAE to the Pakistan cricket team’s manager and captain after the recent handshake row.

Acknowledging the incident of 14 September, Pycroft termed it a “miscommunication” and expressed regret over the matter.

Pycroft had previously instructed both captains not to shake hands during the high-profile India-Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 clash, a move that sparked outrage from the PCB.

Suryakumar Yadav will not collect Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi: reports

India captain Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly requested that if his side wins the Asia Cup 2025, he does not want the trophy to be presented to him by Mohsin Naqvi.

Naqvi, in his role as the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), will present the winners’ trophy to the victorious team.

According to a report by NDTV, Yadav has formally requested not to receive the trophy from Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

“India captain Suryakumar Yadav has also made it clear that he doesn’t want the Asia Cup trophy to be handed to India by Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council, if the team emerges triumphant in the final. This message has also been delivered to the ACC,” the report stated.

Notably, Yadav was criticised by many Indian fans back home after he was seen shaking hands with Naqvi in the Asia Cup 2025 trophy unveiling ceremony.

However, in the high-octane clash against Pakistan, Yadav did not engage in a customary handshake with his counterpart, Salman Ali Agha, after the toss.

The incident did not end there. After hitting the winning runs, the Indian skipper exchanged fist bumps with fellow batter Shivam Dube and walked straight to the dressing room.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan players lined up and waited for the customary handshake, only to see the Indian team retreat to their dressing room and close the doors.

ACC President Naqvi comments on India’s refusal to shake hands with Pakistan

DUBAI: Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi voiced his disappointment after Indian players refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts.

In the high-octane Asia Cup clash at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, India, chasing 128, wrapped up the contest in the 16th over with captain Suryakumar Yadav clearing the ropes for the winning runs.

Yadav and Shivam Dube exchanged fist bumps before heading straight to the dressing room, bypassing the customary handshake with Pakistan players..

After the match, Mohsin Naqvi took to X (formerly Twitter) and called out the lack of sportsmanship, stressing that politics should not overshadow the spirit of cricket.

“Utterly disappointing to witness the lack of sportsmanship today. Dragging politics into the game goes against the very spirit of sports. Let’s hope future victories are celebrated by all teams with grace,” he wrote.

“Indian players’ refusal to shake hands is against sportsmanship,” Cheema said in a PCB statement.
