David, Marsh propel Australia to thrilling T20 win over New Zealand

Tim David hit a four off the last ball to give Australia a nail-biting six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20I in Wellington on Wednesday.

Having been set 216 to win, Australia skipper Mitchell Marsh hammered 72 off 44 balls before batting partner David (31 not out) sealed a thrilling last-gasp victory.

“I thought we were done, to be honest,” admitted the relieved Marsh.

“Timmy David is extremely calm and had a lot of confidence in his ability towards the end. We are very lucky to have him. It was a great game of cricket.”

The three-match series is the last for both teams before the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies in June.

Rachin Ravindra had earlier put New Zealand in the driving seat by hitting 68 runs off 35 balls to claim his first half-century in the format as the hosts finished on 215-3.

Marsh finished with best bowling figures of 1-21 before leading the charge with the bat, hitting seven sixes and two fours in his unbeaten knock.

The captain steadied his side after they lost openers Travis Head and David Warner early on.

Head went for 24, caught by Tim Southee off the bowling of Adam Milne.

Veteran Warner followed for 32 in the sixth over, caught by Glenn Phillips.

Having criticised New Zealand fans in the build-up, Warner blew kisses at the crowd as he was booed off the pitch.

Marsh built a partnership of 42 for the third wicket with Glenn Maxwell, who was clean-bowled by Lockie Ferguson on 25 to leave Australia 111-3 after 10 overs.

New Zealand’s fielding let them down in the 12th over as Southee missed a catch off Josh Inglis, then Phillips dropped Marsh next ball on the boundary.

Inglis was dismissed with three overs left and Australia on 172-4 when he skied his shot to Ravindra at deep backward square leg. Inglis made 20.

The game went to the wire after New Zealand seamer Adam Milne was smashed for 19 runs in the penultimate over.

Australia needed 15 from the last six balls, but Tim David held his nerve by smashing a six before sending the final ball of the night to the boundary past a diving Phillips.

“I thought we didn’t bowl too bad, but the power they possess all the way down is the reason why they are pretty good,” New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said of Australia.

“We had a pretty good score, but we know they keep coming with the bat. The only way to stop them is to take wickets and we didn’t really do that.”

The series moves to Auckland with the next two T20 internationals both to be played at Eden Park, on Friday and Sunday, before a two-Test series.

Conway, bowlers star as New Zealand stun defending champions Australia

SYDNEY: New Zealand openers Devon Conway laid the foundation with an unbeaten 92 before bowlers displayed a combined bowling effort to power their side to a thumping 89-run victory over Australia in the first fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Super 12s.

Defending champions Australia had a dismal start to their T20 World Cup campaign as they suffered a frustrating 89-run defeat at the hands of last year’s finalists New Zealand.

Set to chase a massive 201, the Australian batting lineup failed and bundled out for a skimpy 111 in the 18th over.

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell could put on a brief fight as he top-scored for the hosts with a gritty 28 off 20 delivery.

The rest of the Australian batters failed to chip in the run chase and Australia, as a result, bundled out for a mere 111.

Tim Southee led the bowling attack for New Zealand as he picked up three wickets for a mere six runs, while Mitchell Santner picked as many wickets for 31.

Trent Boult picked two wickets in his economical spell, while Ish Sodhi and Lockie Ferguson made one scalp each.

Batting first on the invitation of Australian captain Aaron Finch, New Zealand batters charged on the hosts’ bowlers to finish at a massive 200/3 at the back of their openers.

Finn Allen took New Zealand to a flying start with his blistering knock that featured five boundaries and three sixes.

The right-handed batter scored a quickfire 42 off just 16 balls up the order and set the foundation of a big total before Josh Hazlewood struck in the fifth over to hand Australia a much-needed breakthrough.

With the side at 56/1 in the fifth over, Conway and Kane Williamson stitched an anchoring second-win stand as they added 69 runs for 53 deliveries.

Australian bowlers, on the other hand, did well to stop the flow of runs and slowed down the proceedings.

Their comeback bolstered in the 13th over when Adam Zampa removed Williamson on a run-a-ball 23, who was struggling to score rapidly.

Glenn Phillips then also failed to make an impact with the bat as he could score 12 off 10 before falling in the 16th over and New Zealand consequently, slipped to 152/3.

All-rounder Jimmy Neesham then joined Conway in the middle and put on an astonishing partnership as they added 48 runs in the last four overs.

Neesham was the core aggressor of the fourth wicket stand as he scored an unbeaten 26 off just 13 deliveries, laced with two sixes.

Conway, on the other hand, carried his bat till the final ball and top-scored for New Zealand with an unbeaten 92 off just 58 deliveries. His magnificent knock featured seven boundaries and two sixes.

Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers for Australi as he bagged two wickets, while Zampa made one scalp.

Australia’s captain Finch calls time on his ODI career

CAIRNS: Australia’s white-ball captain Aaron Finch has announced his retirement from the One-Day Cricket following the conclusion of the ongoing series against New Zealand, on Sunday.

Finch, who made his ODI debut for Australia in 2013, has decided to hang his boots from the 50-over cricket after the third match of the ongoing series against New Zealand. The right-handed batter, however, will continue to lead Australia in T20Is.

“It has been a fantastic ride with some incredible memories,” Finch said. “I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of some brilliant one-day sides. Equally, I have been blessed by all those I have played with and the many people behind the scenes.

“It is time now to give a new leader the best possible opportunity to prepare for and win the next World Cup. I thank all of those who have helped and supported my journey to this point.”

The right-handed batter went through a rough patch in ODI cricket this year, making just 169 runs at 13, including five ducks in his last 12 outings.

Finch, who initially had set his sights on playing the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, however, revealed on Sunday that he had begun to consider the decision of retirement before the Zimbabwe series in Townsville and realised that the ODI World Cup was out of his reach.

It is pertinent to mention here that Finch represented Australia in 145 matches and amassed 5,401 runs at an average of 39.13 including 17 centuries and 30 fifties.

Women’s WC: Bowlers propel Australia to thump New Zealand by 141 runs

WELLINGTON: In the 11th match of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup, Australia sealed a thumping 141-runs victory over the hosts New Zealand following the combined bowling effort from the Aussie bowlers, here on Sunday.

Set to chase 270, New Zealand’s batting line-up failed and bowled out for a skimpy 128 in the 31st over.

The White Ferns had a forgetful start to the run chase as the hosts lost half of their side for just 35. The left-handed middle-order batter Amy Sattherwaite fought hard with her gritty 44 off 67 balls but she too could not pull her side out of trouble.

The side lost wickets at an alarming rate and Sattherwaite, who was retaliating like a lone warrior also made her way back in the 29th over.

Lea Tahuhu, on the other hand, also resisted a bit as she scored 25 off 23 deliveries, while the rest of the batters had no answer to the Australian bowling attack.

For Australia, Darcie Brown shone with three wickets, while Amanda-Jade Wellington and Ashleigh Gardener picked two each. Ellyse Perry, Tahlia McGrath, and Megan Schutt, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

Batting first, Australia managed to post a commendable 269/8 in the allotted 50 overs, thanks to the fifties from Perry and McGrath.

After being put in to bat first, Australian openers Alyssa Healy and Rachael Haynes managed to provide a fair start to the former champions. The pair put on a 37-runs stand for the first wicket before Healy walked back for 15.

Haynes then put on a brief 17-runs partnership with the skipper Meg Lanning as the latter could only manage to score five before making her way back. The former then soon perished in the next over after scoring 30.

Perry alongside Beth Mooney then anchored the innings; putting on an important 57-runs partnership for the fourth wicket. Mooney, who was looking in control lost her wicket to Amelia Kerr in the 30th over. She scored 30 before castled her with a beautiful delivery.

Perry then partnered strongly with McGrath and laid the foundation for a commendable total. The pair added 101 runs for the fifth wicket before the former walked back to the dugout. The all-rounder top-scored with 68 off 86 balls, laced with six boundaries and a six.

McGrath, on the other hand, perished briefly after Perry’s dismissal. She followed back with her 57 off 56 deliveries; smashing eight boundaries.

Gardener then scored a quickfire 48 down the order. She faced a mere 18 deliveries and smacked four boundaries and as many sixes to power her side to 269/8 in 50 overs.

For White Ferns, Tahuhu led the way with three wickets, while Kerr, Hayley Jensen, Frances McKay, and Hannah Rowe struck out a batter each.

New Zealand call off Australia tour over COVID-19 regulations

KARACHI: Following the strict COVID-19 quarantine restrictions, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) postponed an upcoming tour of Australia on Wednesday, 11 days before the scheduled first match.

According to the details, the New Zealand government imposed new entry rules which require a mandatory 10-day isolation period for access into the country. Following this, the NZC decided to call off the Australian tour citing “no guarantee of the space and facilities for the team on their arrival”.

Cricket Australia (CA), on the other hand, offered to extend the tour schedule in order for the Blackcaps to pick a suitable time for their return. However, the New Zealand government said that they could not provide certainty on this either.

After the postponement, Chief Executive NZC – Dana White said the advent of the Omicron variant “prompted a change of heart from the government”.

“NZC and CA (Cricket Australia) had discussed expanding the tour and delaying the squad’s return to New Zealand in the hopes of making it more feasible for the government to approve. But we received advice this morning that they could not provide certainty over this, either,” White said.

New Zealand was scheduled to tour Australia to play three-match ODI and T20I series. With the first match previously scheduled on January 30.
