It was a collective effort from the Bangladesh team as they outclassed the home side in the first Test of the series. Bangladesh became the first team since 2011 to have defeated New Zealand in a Test in their backyard.

MOUNT MAUNGANUI: Bangladesh cricket fans were ecstatic after waking to learn of their first-ever victory on New Zealand soil with Wednesday’s crushing, eight-wicket Test win. 

Dawn was breaking as news of the team’s triumph came through, with chilly weather and a recent jump in coronavirus cases keeping public celebrations subdued.

But thousands took to social media to share footage of dressing room celebrations after Mushfiqur Rahim cut Kyle Jamieson for a boundary, sealing what was just the sixth Bangladesh Test win away.

“No procession, no screaming in houses… who thought the most beautiful day in Bangladesh cricket would come so surreptitiously,” wrote cricket fan Amlan Mostakim Hossain.

Star batsman Tamim Iqbal, who missed the tour due to injury, was among the cricketers revelling in the historic moment.

“Years after years, tours after tours, we returned from New Zealand empty-handed,” he wrote on Facebook.

“For many reasons (the) situation was tougher this time. But this team removed all the hurdles to bring an incredible win.”

Wednesday amounted to “the greatest victory of Bangladesh cricket”, national cricket board operations chief Jalal Yunus said on Twitter.

The match was wrapped up in one session on the final day as Ebadot Hossain took a career best six for 46 and New Zealand were rolled over in their second innings for 169.

It was a “David and Goliath” result, with Bangladesh ranked ninth in the world while world Test champions New Zealand are second.

It was also New Zealand’s first loss in 16 home Tests over the past four years.

The second Test starts in Christchurch on Sunday.

In response to the touring side’s 458, New Zealand had an average start to their second innings; their openers could only provide a 29-runs stand before Tom Latham dismissed after scoring a mere 14.

His opening partner – Will Young, on the other hand, stood firm and batted brilliantly for his half-century, he scored a valuable 69-runs, laced with seven boundaries. He also put on a magnificent partnership of 73 with Taylor.

Following Young’s dismissal, the hosts then ran into a collapse; losing two more wickets without adding any runs. The side was slipped from 136/2 to 136/5.

Veteran batter – Ross Taylor, however, retaliated against the touring side’s bowling attack; scoring an unbeaten 37 before the stumps were called. Taylor and Rachin Ravindra (6*) will now resume the proceedings for the home side at 147/5 on the final day.

For Bangladesh, Hossain starred; taking four wickets, while Taskin Ahmed made one scalp.

The Tigers, resuming at an overnight score of 175/2, had a poor start to their inning. The touring side’s set batter and the then top-scorer – Mahmudul Hasan Joy departed after scoring just eight runs in the first session. He scored a brilliant 78, laced with seven boundaries.

Following his departure, Mominul Haque put on a brief partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim. The pair added 19-runs for the fourth wicket before Rahim departed after scoring just 12.

Liton Das then joined the skipper – Haque and recorded a dazzling159-runs partnership. Both the batters scored half-centuries and strengthened the position of the Tigers in the ongoing Test. The pair looked to carry their bat all the way through, but, Haque fell short; missing his well deserved century by just 12 runs. He scored 88, including 12 boundaries.

Das, on the other hand, stood firm at the other end and remained not out with his 86. Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (20*) will now resume the proceedings for the touring side at 401/6 on the fourth day.

Bangladesh, started off the innings poorly; losing their first wicket for just 43 runs. Shadman Islam was the batter, who dismissed after scoring 22.

The duo then made things easier for the touring side with their magnificent century-partnership. Both the batters scored half-centuries, but, Shanto dismissed after scoring 64, in the final session.

The Tigers’ skipper, Mominul Haque joined Joy at the crease, the pair added a 28-runs partnership before the stumps called. Joy remained not-out with his top score for the side; scoring 70, laced with seven boundaries. Haque, on the other hand, unbeaten for his eight.

The duo will resume the proceedings for the side at 175/2 on the third day of the first Test.

For the Kiwis, Neil Wagner bagged two wickets.

Resumed at an overnight score of 258/5, New Zealand could not add much to their total; losing their remaining five wickets after adding 70 runs. The side bowled out for 328 in the first innings.

Kiwi batters made little to no contribution on the second day. Henry Nicholls, on the other hand, batted magnificently, the batter put on his 11th half-century in Test cricket. The batter batted valiantly before getting dismissed by Islam on 75.

For the Tigers, Shoriful Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz starred; taking three wickets, while Haque bagged two. Ebadot Hossain, on the other hand, struck out a batter.
