The two-time Wimbledon finalist would now take on Iga Swiatek in the tournament.

However, the 31-year-old – Tunisia’s unofficial “Minister of Happiness” – was not in an enjoying mood as she got emotional while sharing her views on the ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict.

Following the match, Ons Jabeur said she was unhappy with the prevailing crisis before breaking down into tears. She added, “It’s very tough seeing children, babies dying every day.”

“I cannot be happy with just this win, with what is happening. I’m sorry guys, it’s supposed to be about tennis, but it’s very frustrating looking at videos every day. I’m sorry – it’s not a political message, it’s just humanity. I want peace in this world and that’s it,” the athlete added.

She said she had trouble sleeping after looking at the visuals from the war in Gaza.

“I try to stay off social media as much as I can but it’s very tough. You go through horrible photos and videos every day – it doesn’t let me sleep or recover very well. The worst thing is I feel hopeless, I feel like cannot do anything,” she said.

Ons Jabeur added that she has been affected by watching babies, women and people dying every day in Palestine. Moreover, she wished to wave a magic wand and end this and have peace for everybody.

She announced that she would donate part of her earnings from the tournament to the Gaza victims.

It is pertinent to mention that Israeli bombardment has left at least 8,796 people – including 3,648 children and 2,290 women – dead.

Djokovic, Jabeur on committee of controversial tennis players body

MELBOURNE: Novak Djokovic and women’s world number two Ons Jabeur were named Wednesday on the first executive committee of the controversial Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA).

Serbia’s Djokovic, the former men’s number one, was instrumental in the creation of the PTPA, having quit as president of the ATP Player Council in 2020 to launch the breakaway organisation.

The ATP runs men’s tennis. The PTPA is independent of the ATP and its women’s equivalent, the WTA, and says it wants to give players a greater voice in the sport.

Six other players were also named on the executive committee, or leadership body: Paula Badosa, Hubert Hurkacz, John Isner, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Vasek Pospisil and Zheng Saisai.

The committee is “centered on advancing player rights, growing and improving the business of tennis”, the PTPA said in a statement from Melbourne, ahead of next week’s Australian Open.

Speaking in Adelaide last week, Djokovic said: “When it comes to PTPA, a player organisation that is 100 percent devoted to players, we don’t have anything like that in tennis.”

The 35-year-old, one of the most successful men’s players of all time, admitted that “we were not accepted and embraced by Grand Slams, ATP nor WTA, so it makes things difficult for us”.

“But this association needs to live,” he said.

“It needs to be there because players don’t have 100 percent representation in the tennis world, unfortunately.”

Swiatek downs Sabalenka to face Jabeur in US Open final

NEW YORK: World number one Iga Swiatek defeated Aryna Sabalenka in three sets to set up a US Open final showdown with Ons Jabeur on Thursday.

Two-time French Open champion Swiatek came from behind to defeat sixth-seed Sabalenka 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at Arthur Ashe Stadium and reach her maiden US Open final.

Sabalenka had been chasing the first Grand Slam final of her career after just missing out with semi-final defeats at Wimbledon and the US Open last year.

But the 24-year-old from Belarus suffered a late collapse while leading in the third set as Swiatek edged victory.

Polish star Swiatek said an emergency bathroom break after losing the first set had been crucial.

“I kind of needed to go,” Swiatek said. “For sure I felt lighter. I’m sorry — that’s disgusting,” the 21-year-old added.

“I tried to use that time to think about what to change because I remember when I was younger all I would do in the bathroom between sets after I lost was cry.

“But this time I could think about what to change and actually problem solve.”

Sabalenka looked well placed to break her final duck as she swept into an early lead against the top seed.

The hard-hitting Sabalenka broke Swiatek three times in the opening set, rattling her opponent’s shaky service game and stretching her with an array of powerful groundstrokes.

But Swiatek looked rejuvenated after her bathroom break following the first set and came out for the second all guns blazing.

She broke Sabalenka to love in the opening game and then held twice for a 3-1 lead.

She sealed a further break with a backhand cross-court return of serve to open up a 4-1 advantage as Sabalenka struggled to cope with the change in tempo.

She was broken again in the seventh game, Swiatek levelling the match after Sabalenka fluffed an easy volley at the net on set point.

Nevertheless Sabalenka appeared to have stopped the bleeding in the third set.

She broke Swiatek in the opening game and then broke again for a 3-2 lead after Swiatek had broken back.

She held serve for a 4-2 lead and the momentum seemed to be with her.

But Sabalenka’s game disintegrated from that point on. Swiatek broke her to love to make it 4-4 and then held for a 5-4 lead.

Sabalenka was overrun in the 10th game as Swiatek raced into a 0-40 lead to move to triple matchpoint.

Sabalenka held off the first with a forehand volley at the net, but her 44th unforced error  on the next point sealed her fate.

Ons Jabeur makes history by securing Wimbledon final berth

LONDON: No.3 seed Ons Jabeur carried on her astounding Wimbledon run as she thumped Tatjana Maria 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to become the first Tunisia player to book a Grand Slam final berth.

In-form Jabeur, fuelled with momentum, drew an early lead for herself as she broke Maria 2-1 to start the proceedings on a high before extending her lead to 5-2 and did not face a break point before claiming a straightforward first set.

The second set, however, drew a contrasting result as Maria pushed Jabeur on the back foot with her aggressive approach and nullified the latter’s lead by claiming the second set 6-3.

Maria’s exceptional comeback forced Jabeur to recollect herself and it seemed to have worked for the Tunisian as the World No.2 completely dominated Maria in the third set to claim a historic victory.

Following her qualification to the Wimbledon final, Jabeur has become the first Tunisian, Arab, and African woman to reach a grand slam final.

World No.2 will now face Elena Rybakina in the final, who claimed a straight-set victory over Simona Halep 6-3, 6-3 to book her final berth.

‘I’m a huge Cristiano Ronaldo fan’ Ons Jabeur reveals her football passion

LONDON: Women’s World number two Ons Jabeur has revealed that she started to follow Real Madrid because of Cristiano Ronaldo while claiming to be his huge fan.

Tunisia’s Jabuer, who has reached Wimbledon’s round of sixteen and will lock horns against France’s Diane Parry on Friday, disclosed in a BBC Sport column that the Portuguese star was her favorite footballer and called him an inspiration.

“I love watching football and I’m a huge Cristiano Ronaldo fan. He’s a great athlete and just an inspiration for me,” she said.

The Tennis star stated that she had been following Real Madrid because of Ronaldo and felt dejected when he left the club.

“I became a Real Madrid fan thanks to Cristiano, I was pretty sad when Cristiano left but I’m always following him, as well as still following Real,” she added

Meanwhile, she also claimed to be a Manchester United fan too since her favorite footballer had joined the club and vowed to continue her support for Ronaldo wherever he moves.

“So now I’m a Manchester United fan too and if he goes anywhere else then I will support that team for sure,” she maintained.

She further expressed her wish to witness a Real Madrid match because of her passion for the club while claiming that she felt connected with Real’s striker Karim Benzema because of her Arab Heritage.

“It’s on my bucket list to go and see a Real Madrid match, When I’m playing at the Madrid Open I always want to go to the Bernabeu to watch a match and I especially wanted to go this year because Real had a massive Champions League game against Manchester City,” she added.

“That Champions League game was the night when Karim Benzema scored the winning goal – I love him too. He’s of Algerian heritage so there is an Arabic connection for me,” she concluded.

Serena Williams’ comeback cut short by Jabeur injury

EASTBOURNE: Serena Williams’ Wimbledon preparations suffered a blow after doubles partner Ons Jabeur withdrew from the Eastbourne tournament because of a knee injury on Thursday.

Williams had returned to tennis at Eastbourne after 12 months away, playing her first two competitive matches since she limped out of last year’s Wimbledon in tears with a leg injury.

The 40-year-old American and Tunisian partner Jabeur made it through to the Eastbourne semi-finals with wins over Maria Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo in the last 16 and Shuko Aoyama and Chan Hao-ching in the quarter-finals.

But Jabeur’s injury deprives Serena of the chance to hone further her grass-court game ahead of the start of Wimbledon on Monday.

Before Williams made the surprise announcement of her return last week, rumours of retirement had swirled around her for several months.

But Williams has accepted a wild card into the women’s singles at Wimbledon as she bids to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

She will find out who she faces in the first round when the draw is made on Friday.

Speaking after Wednesday’s doubles match, Williams had said: “I feel good. As good as one can feel after having such a long time off. I was telling Ons, that this was a really good match, and the second set in particular, they played really well, but we were able to just play under different circumstances.

“It was actually good match play and match practice, which is exactly what I needed and what I wanted to do coming here, so I couldn’t have asked for more.”

The last of Williams’ 23 Grand Slam singles titles came at the Australian Open in 2017.

Since then she has lost four Grand Slam finals, including at Wimbledon in 2018 and 2019.

Williams won the seventh and most recent of her seven Wimbledon singles titles in 2016.

Serena, who became a mother in 2017, has plummeted to 1,204th in the WTA rankings due to her period out of action prior to Eastbourne.
