Malan, bowlers star as England thump Pakistan to claim series triumph

LAHORE: England left-handed batter Dawid Malan played a magnificent knock of 78* and powered his side to a massive total of 209/3 before the bowlers decimated Pakistan batting line-up to bolster their side to a resounding victory to claim the seven-match T20I series 4-3.

Set to chase 210, Pakistan’s batting line-up failed completely and could only score 142/8 in the allotted 20 overs, thus, handing a dominating 67-run victory to England in the series decider.

Pakistan were off to a dismal start as the home side lost their key batters Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan cheaply for a mere four and one respectively. The hosts, as a result, slipped to 5/2 in the second over.

Iftikhar Ahmed and Shan Masood then attempted to script the fightback with a 28-run partnership for the third wicket before the former fell in the sixth over off a short-pitch delivery from David Willey. He could score 19 off 16.

Following the slump, Shan then joined hands with Khushdil in the middle and the duo added 53 runs for the fourth wicket before the latter perished after scoring a snail-paced 27.

The home side then began to lose wickets at an alarming rate, while Shan, who was holding his ground firm also fell in the 19th over after scoring a gritty 56 off 43, laced with four boundaries and a six.

Chris Woakes led the bowling attack for England with three wickets, while Willey bagged two. Adil Rashid, Sam Curran, and Reece Topley struck out a batter each.

England, batting first, on the invitation of Pakistan captain Babar Azam, charged on the host bowlers as they amassed a massive 209/3 in the allotted 20 overs, thanks to a match-defining partnership between Malan and Brook.

The English openers – Alex Hales and Phil Salt – gave the touring side a flying start as they amassed 39 runs in the first four overs and laid a solid foundation for a massive total.

Right-arm pacer Mohammad Hasnain, however, then struck on the first delivery of the first over to hand Pakistan a much-needed breakthrough as he removed Alex Hales, who scored 18 off 13.

The touring side lost another wicket in the same over as a direct hit from Shadab Khan saw their last match hero Salt walking back to the pavilion. He scored 20 off 12 deliveries, laced with three boundaries.

Ben Duckett and Malan then anchored the proceedings for England as the pair added 62 runs for the third wicket and made sure to continue the momentum offered by the openers and powered their side to breach the 100-run mark.

Mohammad Rizwan’s sharp work behind the stump in the 10th over brought an end to a brilliant knock of Duckett, who perished after scoring 30 off just 19 including three boundaries and a six.

Malan and Brook then combined magnificently for a blistering 108-run partnership for the fourth wicket. The pair took on Pakistan bowlers and also enjoyed three changes offered by the sloppy fielding efforts of the home side.

Malan top-scored for the side with a terrific knock of 78 off 47 deliveries, laced with eight boundaries and three sixes, while Brook fellfour short of his half-century as he finished unbeaten on 46 off just 20 with the help of a boundary and four sixes.

Right-arm pacer Mohammad Hasnain was the only bowler to pick a wicket for Pakistan.

Pakistan eye revenge to seal series victory over England after six years

LAHORE: In a highly-competitive seven-match series, levelled at 3-3 after the first six matches, Pakistan would seek revenge from a crushing sixth T20I defeat to claim series victory over England after six years in the final match at Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.

The two sides went hard at each other in the first six matches with England winning the first, third, and sixth match, while Pakistan emerged victorious in the second, fourth, and fifth.

England’s hard-hitting opening batter Phil Salt – who rose to fame from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) – charged on the Pakistan bowling attack in the absence of star speedster Haris Rauf and powered England to a dominating eight wickets victory.

In an all-important series decider, Pakistan would likely recruit back their key players Mohammad Rizwan and Haris Rauf to go with the full flow against England in a bid to seal a series victory over the side after six years.
[totalpoll id=”241269″]

England, on the other hand, fuelled with momentum likely to bring in their key pacer Mark Wood to carry on their domination over the hosts.

Pakistan, once again, would be relying heavily on their opening pair – Babar Azam and Rizwan – and the bowling attack, while the middle-order persists to be a concern for the men in green.

Whereas England will rely on last-match hero Salt and their powerful middle order, their bowling attack would also strengthen with the return of Wood.

Salt powers England to chase down 170 in 15th over to level series

LAHORE: England’s opening batter Phil Salt wreaked havoc over the Pakistan bowling line-up as the touring side sealed the sixth T20I with eight wickets and 33 balls to force a series decider, scheduled on Sunday.

Set to chase 170, England comfortably steered to a much-needed victory in just the 15th over, thanks to a quickfire knock of their opening batter Salt, who charged on the host’s bowlers right from the first over.

England’s opening pair of Alex Hales and Salt gave the touring side a flying start as they amassed fifty runs in just three overs.

Following England’s flying start, Pakistan captain Babar Azam then brought Shadab Khan into the attack, who struck in his first over to hand the home side a highly anticipated breakthrough as he removed Hales for 27, who faced just 12 boundaries and smashed four boundaries and a six.

Hales’ dismissal did not bother Salt much as he continued to attack the Pakistan bowling attack and put on another scintillating partnership with Dawid Malan.

The pair continued their domination over Pakistan bowlers and added 73 runs for the second wicket at a rapid pace before Shadab struck again to remove the left-hander. Malan scored 26 off 18 deliveries.

Ben Duckett then joined Salt in the middle and put on a match-winning 42-run partnership to steer the touring side to the victory.

Salt top-scored for the side with a brilliant 88 off just 41 deliveries, laced with 13 boundaries and three sixes, while Duckett remained not-out on 26, facing just 16.

Shadab was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan as he bagged two wickets for 34, while the rest remained clueless in front of the strong English batting line-up.

Batting first on the invitation of England’s captain Moeen Ali, the hosts had an unwanted start to their inning as debutant Mohammad Haris fell cheaply after managing to score a mere seven.

Following the early halt, Shan Masood, too, could not settle things down as David Willey trapped him in legs for a duck and Pakistan, as a result, slipped to 15/2 in the fourth over.

Haider Ali then joined his captain Babar in the middle and attempted to anchor the inning as the pair added an important 47 runs for the third wicket.

Haider, however, miscued one while pulling a shorter delivery off Sam Curran in the ninth over and walked back to the pavilion in disgust after scoring 18.

Iftikhar Ahmed then looked to turn things around with Babar and scored a quickfire cameo as the duo took Pakistan to 110 in the 15th over.

The hard-hitting batter, however, could not continue his brilliance and fell victim to Curran. He scored 31 off just 21 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and as many sixes.

Babar, on the other hand, held his ground firm and kept the scoreboard ticking while the home side lost their explosive batter, Asif Ali, for a mere nine.

Mohammad Nawaz played a crucial knock of 12 not-out and supported Babar in the death overs. Pakistan captain led from the front and top-scored for the side with a magnificent 87 off 59 deliveries, laced with seven boundaries and three sixes.

For England, Curran and Willey bagged two wickets each, while Richard Gleeson and Reece Topley struck out a batter each.

Moeen’s fifty goes in vain as Pakistan beat England in a final-over thriller

LAHORE: Debutant Aamir Jamal held his nerves calm to defend 15 runs off the final over as he leaked just nine runs to power Pakistan to a thrilling six-run victory over England in the fifth T20I of the seven-match series before wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan shone with a valiant knock of 63.

Set to chase 146, England fell just six runs short of the victory as the Pakistani bowlers displayed combined effort to reduce the touring side to 139/7 in the allotted 20 overs.

The touring side had a dismal start to their run chase as they lost three wickets for a paltry 31 in the first five overs with Alex Hales, Phil Salt, and Ben Duckett walking back to the pavilion cheaply.

Dawid Malan then looked to anchor the run chase with Harry Brook and added 23 runs for the fourth wicket before Shadab Khan trapped the latter in his legs in the ninth over. He could score just four off nine deliveries.

Malan’s stay at the crease also remained brief following Brook’s dismissal as he fell victim to Iftikhar Ahmed, who trapped him plumb for 36. The left-handed batter faced 35 deliveries and could hit six boundaries.

Following the slump, England’s skipper Moeen Ali stood up for his team and top-scored for the side with a handy 51 not-out off just 37 deliveries but he too, could not power the touring side over the line as England fell six runs short of the victory as they finished at 139/7 in 20 Overs.

For Pakistan, Aamir, Haris Rauf, Shadab, Mohammad Nawaz, Iftikhar, and Mohammad Wasim Jr made one scalp each.

Batting first on the invitation of England captain Moeen, the home side was off to a poor start as their captain Babar Azam perished cheaply for nine.

Following the early slump, Shan Masood and Rizwan looked to script recovery as they added a gritty 25 runs for the second wicket. The pair appeared to have settled but Shan failed to execute a ramp shot off David Willey. He scored seven off eight deliveries.

Following his dismissal, the side began to lose wickets at a frustrating rate and only Iftikhar Ahmed and Aamir Jamal managed to amass double-figures besides top-scorer Rizwan, who carried his bat till the 18th over.

The top-ranked T20I batter scored 63 off 46 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and three sixes.

Mark Wood led the bowling attack for England as he returned with bowling figures of 3/20, while Sam Curran and David Willey bagged two each. Chris Woakes, on the other hand, struck out a batter.

Haris trumps Dawson’s brilliance as Pakistan sink England in fourth T20I

KARACHI: Pakistan speedster Haris Rauf bowled a game-changing 19th over as he struck twice before left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz shone with three 3/35 and bolstered Pakistan to defend 167 and seal the fourth T20I of the seven-match series.

Set to chase 167, England fell just three runs short in the final over, courtesy of a brilliant 19th over from Haris, who struck twice to remove the danger man Liam Dawson and Olly Stone to bring the hosts back in the game after an expensive 18th over from Mohammad Hasnain.

Earlier, Dawson had charged on young pacer Hasnain and scored 24 runs in the 18th over to bring England back into the game after the touring side lost quick wickets in the middle overs.

The touring side had a dismal start to their run chase as they lost three wickets for a mere 14 runs in two overs with Hasnain striking twice in his first, to give Pakistan an upper hand over England.

England’s dependable pair of Ben Duckett and Harry Brook attempted to anchor the run chase with a gritty 43-run partnership for the fourth wicket but Nawaz dampened their hopes in the eighth over as he trapped Duckett in his legs for 33.

The touring skipper Moeen Ali then joined Brook in the middle and put on a crucial 49-run partnership to keep their side in the hunt but Nawaz struck again to provide another vital breakthrough to Pakistan and castled Moeen for 29 and England, as a result, slipped to 106/5 in the 14th over.

Mohammad Wasim Jr then further added to the misery of the English side as he outclassed Brook with a slower delivery in the 15th over, who walked back after scoring 34 off 29 deliveries, laced with two boundaries and a six.

Wasim Jr then bowled the final over after Haris’ brilliant 19 over. England’s tailender Reece Topley looked to steal a run on the second delivery of the over but a direct hit from Shan Masood led the men in green to a thrilling victory over England in the fourth T20I.

Nawaz and Haris bagged three wickets each for Pakistan, while Hasnain claimed two. Wasim Jr, on the other hand, made one scalp.

The home side were off to a decent start batting first on the invitation of England captain Moeen Ali as the pair of captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan amassed 97 runs for the first wicket.

The pair was majorly dominated by wicketkeeper batter Rizwan, who had amassed his 19th T20I half-century at a rapid pace while Babar, on the other hand, struggled to emulate his partner and as a result, fell victim to Dawson in the 12th over.

The second match centurion Babar could score 36 off 28 deliveries with the help of three boundaries.

Rizwan then joined hands with Shan Masood, who was promoted to number three and added 52 runs for the second wicket. The touring side’s bowlers, however, dominated the batting pair as they barred them from scoring freely in the middle overs.

Shan, who was struggling to find the rhythm fell in the 19th over after scoring a snail-paced 21. He faced 19 deliveries in the course of his knock and could hit a boundary.

Rizwan, who was eyeing his second T20I century, fell 12 runs short of it as Reece Topley struck twice in the final over to remove the former. He top-scored for Pakistan with 88 off 67 deliveries, laced with nine boundaries and a six.

Right-handed hard-hitting batter Asif Ali then scored a quickfire 13 runs off just three deliveries in the final over and powered the hosts to 166/4 in 20 Overs.

Topley led the way for England with two wickets, while David Willey and Dawson made one scalp each.

Pakistan and their middle-order woes; a case to address

Consistent middle-order failures have now become a pertinent headache for the national team as after having a disastrous Asia Cup 2022, the Green Shirts could not recover from the same issue in the recently-concluded series opener of the historic home T20I series against England.

Pakistan’s middle-order failure is a case that needed to be addressed at the earliest as the biggest event of the year – ICC T20 World Cup 2022 – is nearing in and the national team, as of yet, could not find the combination.

In the first T20I against England, Pakistan tried a different middle-order compared to that of Asia Cup 2022 by recruiting Haider Ali at number three, Shan Masood at four, and Iftikhar Ahmed at five.

But, the change in the batting combination failed to address the issue, the national team has been going through for a long time now.

Khushdil Shah who is a part of the national team as a finisher came to bat at number seven but he, too, failed to live up to his playing role and slog the ball big in the death overs.

Pakistan’s opening pair of captain Babar Azam and top-ranked T20I batter Mohammad Rizwan gave the hosts a flying start in the first T20I after facing a lot of criticism for their slow approach and strike rate.

Pakistan, as a result, were 104/1 in the first 12 overs, but in the last eight overs, six wickets fell and only 54 runs were scored courtesy of yet another failure of the middle-order.

Khushdil, who is in the team for power-hitting, somehow makes his way into the playing XI every time despite continuous failures, and could score a mere five runs off seven deliveries with a paltry strike rate of less than a hundred.

But this is not the first time, if you look at the last 10 innings of Khushdil, it does not include a single big knock against top-ranked sides, nor could he score a fifty in his T20 career.

Now the question is, how long will Khushdil continue to get opportunities? How does he get into the team? Are power hitters like that? We have a bunch of power hitters but none comes in handy when needed.

Asif Ali and Iftikhar, on the other hand, are also part of Pakistan’s middle order but their performances also lack consistency.

Combining all of these elements, it is safe to say that Pakistan are in a dire need of addressing their middle-order failures by making a dependable combination ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup.
