WATCH: Shan Masood engages in heated exchange with journalist questioning his future

MULTAN: Pakistan red-ball captain Shan Masood engaged in a heated exchange with a journalist during the press conference after his team’s 120-run defeat in the second Test against West Indies here on Monday.

After Pakistan’s loss, a journalist questioned Shan Masood’s captaincy and his future in the role.

Shan, visibly frustrated by the question and its tone, initially opted to move on, saying, “Next question.” However, the journalist interrupted, asking for a response, which prompted a heated reply.

“You have your opinion and I respect that but there is a lot of disrespect in your question. You can’t show disrespect to players, me and the others,” Shan Masood stated.

“Your question was very insulting. You tried to undermine someone with your question.

“If you want to talk about facts, feel free to, but your information is completely wrong. You can express your opinion but do some research first.

Shan Masood stated that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is the decision-making body and every player will accept whatever their decision is.

He further stressed that as a player, their job is to give their best for the team and they deserve respect for their efforts.

“Making decisions is PCB’s job, and all decisions, including mine, are accepted by everyone,” he added.

“We play for Pakistan, and everything we do is to bring results but no one will tolerate such disrespect. You have to understand that.

“You have to understand and appreciate that we are trying to do something different and you must study that. Anyone can google something but we are trying to do something and we have won three out of the last four Tests at home.”

Watch: Warrican hits back at Sajid with ‘You Can’t See Me’ celebration

MULTAN: West Indies man of the series Jomel Warrican took a jibe at Pakistan’s off-spinner Sajid Khan with WWE superstar John Cena’s iconic ‘You can’t see me’ celebration during the second Test here on Monday.

Warrican took a jab at the off-spinner in the 44th over of Pakistan’s second innings when Sajid Khan was bowled out cheaply by the left-arm spinner.

While Pakistan’s spinner was walking back, Warrican mocked him with Cena’s famous signature pose followed by Sajid’s own celebration.

Earlier, Sajid Khan had mimicked the same style after nearly dismissing Warrican in West Indies second innings.

The signature ‘You can’t see me’ pose was popularised in the Wrestling world by the former WWE champion John Cena.

It’s worth noting that Warrican-led spin master class steered West Indies to a dominant 120-run victory over Pakistan to level the two-match series 1-1 here on Monday.

A brief glimmer of hope emerged as Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha steadied the innings with a 39-run partnership. However, Warrican once again turned the tide, dismissing Salman for 15.

Rizwan’s resistance ended soon after as he gave away his wicket, scoring 25 runs. He was dismissed by Warrican, who picked up his fourth wicket, leaving Pakistan at 122/8 in 41.3 overs.

Noman Ali showed some resilience, smashing a six off Motie’s delivery, but his innings was cut short after scoring just six runs, leaving the side at 131/9 in 43 overs.

Sajid Ali was the final wicket to fall, dismissed by Warrican, ensuring the West Indies their first Test win over Pakistan on their home soil since 1990.

Warrican registered match-winning figures of 5/27, while Sinclair claimed three wickets and Motie took two.

Pakistan languish at bottom in WTC standings after West Indies defeat

MULTAN: Pakistan suffered a 120-run defeat in the second Test against the West Indies here on Monday, consequently falling to the bottom of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings.

West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican claimed a five-wicket haul to bundle the hosts for 133 in the second innings to help his team level the two-match series 1-1.

This was West Indies’ first Test win in Pakistan since their seven-wicket triumph under the captaincy of Desmond Haynes in Faisalabad back in 1990.

With this loss, Pakistan finished the current WTC cycle at the bottom, with only five wins in 14 matches.

Their only notable overseas performance was a 2-0 victory against Sri Lanka in July 2023. Following that Pakistan managed to win only three Test matches, all on their home soil.

It’s worth noting that in the previous cycle, Pakistan ended in eighth position, which highlights their recent struggles in red-ball cricket.

Meanwhile, the West Indies also finished poorly ranking just ahead of the Pakistan team in 8th place with a PCT of 28.21.

Their record for this cycle includes three wins, two draws, and eight losses in 13 matches.

The two finalists of the WTC, South Africa and Australia are sitting at the top of the table with a PCT of 69.44 and 63.73 respectively.

Australia position will remain same on points table even if they whitewash Sri Lanka in the upcoming two-match Test series.

Shan Masood opens up after Pakistan’s loss in second West Indies Test

MULTAN: Pakistan captain Shan Masood has shared the reasons behind his team’s 120-run defeat in the second Test against West Indies here on Monday.

West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican claimed a five-wicket haul to bundle Pakistan for 133 in the second innings to help his team level the two-match series 1-1.

This was West Indies’ first Test win in Pakistan since their seven-wicket triumph under the captaincy of Desmond Haynes in Faisalabad back in 1990.

Shan Masood, during the post-match presentation, acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, while giving credit to West Indies’ batters for their effort on a challenging pitch.

“They batted well, but that’s something that we have to learn. We have struggled to get the tail out here, something that we did well in South Africa and Australia,” said Masood.

“Even in the game we lost right now, the first day, we were in a position where we wanted to be, just one bad performance and it led to a domino effect.

“But you can’t forget the way we have played right through. We have realised that one extra partnership can have a big effect on games, that’s what we want to learn quickly.”

Masood also highlighted that Pakistan have done well since turning to spin-friendly pitches and there are some positives even in this defeat.

“We did win 3 of the 4 Tests on such pitches, we did well on the first session here as well. It’s important to see some encouraging signs,” he added.

“Saud [Shakeel] and Rizzy [Mohammad Rizwan] got their fifties, I got a 60-ball fifty in the first Test, and Babar [Azam] contributed as well.

“We might not get those big hundreds, but you need to be proactive, Brathwaite took the game on with his 50 and that’s what we need to be aware of and probably be better going further.”

Jomel Warrican steers West Indies to historic Test win against Pakistan

MULTAN: Jomel Warrican claimed a five-wicket haul to steer West Indies to a dominant 120-run victory over Pakistan to level the two-match series 1-1 here on Monday.

This was West Indies’ first Test win in Pakistan since their seven-wicket triumph under the captaincy of Desmond Haynes in Faisalabad back in 1990.

Pakistan were bundled for a meagre 133 runs while chasing 254 in the first session of the third day. Babar Azam was the top-scorer with his 67-ball 31.

Warrican led the bowling charts with his figures of 5-27, while Kevin Sinclair and Gudakesh Motie returned with three and two wickets respectively.

The hosts resumed their innings at 76-4, but their situation quickly deteriorated as their fragile lineup crumbled alarmingly within just 20 minutes of play.

Kevin Sinclair made a critical breakthrough, sending Saud Shakeel back to the pavilion for a mere 13 runs. The situation worsened soon after, as night-watchman Kashif Ali (1) fell victim to Jomel Warrican, leaving Pakistan teetering on the brink at 76-6.

Just when it seemed like the team was set to collapse entirely, a flicker of hope emerged as Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha joined forces to forge a 39-run partnership that steadied the innings momentarily.

However, Warrican once again shifted the momentum, dismissing Salman for a modest 15 runs. Rizwan, showcasing admirable resistance throughout the innings, eventually succumbed as well, scoring 25 runs before giving away his wicket to Warrican.

Noman Ali attempted to infuse some life into the innings, striking a six off a delivery from Motie, but his efforts were short-lived as he was dismissed shortly after, contributing only six runs to the team’s total and leaving Pakistan reeling at 131/9.

The final nail in the coffin came with the dismissal of Sajid Ali, who fell to Warrican, culminating in a rapid collapse that sent Pakistan crashing down.

Gudakesh Motie, Jomel Warrican star as West Indies bundle Pakistan

MULTAN: West Indies spinners Jomel Warrican and Gudakesh Motie spun a web to bundle Pakistan for 154 runs on the opening day of the second Test here on Saturday.

Warrican returned with bowling figures of 4-43, while Motie and Kemar Roach managed three and two wickets respectively to give West Indies a nine-run lead.

Pakistan’s Sajid Khan remained unbeaten after scoring 16 runs from 20 balls, with the help of two boundaries.

Mohammad Rizwan top-scored for Pakistan with a gutsy 49-run knock, while Saud Shakeel managed 32 runs.

Rizwan and Saud extended their partnership to 68 runs in the third session of the first day, taking the team’s total to 119 before the latter fell courtesy of a brilliant catch by Roach.

Meanwhile, Rizwan got out stumped off Warrican’s bowling to leave Pakistan in a precarious situation. Except Sajid, no Pakistani batter could pose any threat as they were folded for 154.

Earlier, Pakistan were struggling on 70-4 when the umpires called for Tea with Saud Shakeel (14*) and Mohammad Rizwan (13*) on the crease.

The hosts took a cautious start before the West Indies bowler took three quick wickets to dismantle Pakistan’s top-order.

Mohammad Hurraira fell prey to Roach after scoring nine runs, while Babar Azam (1) was castled by Motie in the next over. Roach bowled skipper Shan Masood, who was playing on 15, to leave Pakistan reeling on 25-3.

Kamran Ghulam scored a fighting 16 before he gave an easy catch to Alick Athanaze off Motie’s bowling.

Rizwan joined Saud and they played cautiously to ensure no further damage in the second session of the day.

Earlier, Pakistan bundled West Indies for 163 runs in the first session, courtesy of Noman Ali‘s six-wicket haul.

Pacer Kashif Ali provided the first breakthrough to Pakistan as he removed Mikyle Louis (4) to claim his first Test wicket before Sajid Khan dismissed West Indies’ debutant Amir Jangoo in the next over.

Kavem Hodge held on to one end, while Pakistan spinners wreaked havoc on the other end, with Noman Ali taking a hat-trick to leave West Indies struggling on 38-7. Hodge scored 21 runs from 38 balls before he fell victim to Abrar Ahmed.

With the scoreboard reading 54-8, Pakistan looked in control, however, West Indies tailenders helped the team recover as they scored 109 for the last two wickets.

Gudakesh Motie and Kemar Roach (25) stitched a 41-run stand for the ninth wicket to take the team’s total to 95 before Noman struck to take his fifth scalp.

Motie was joined by Jomel Warrican and together they added a crucial 68 runs for the last wicket, much to the frustration of the home team.

Noman finally ended the partnership and West Indies’ innings with the wicket of Motie, who scored 55 runs from 87 balls. Warrican remained unbeaten after scoring 36 off 40.

For Pakistan, Noman took six, while Sajid Khan claimed two wickets. Abrar Ahmed and Kashif Ali contributed with one wicket each.

Aqib Javed responds to criticism on Pakistan’s spin-spiced strategy in Test cricket

MULTAN: Pakistan interim head coach Aqib Javed on Friday defended the formula of using spin-friendly pitches in the home series ahead of the second Test against West Indies, starting here tomorrow.

Pakistan won the first Test before tea on the third day as spinners Sajid Khan grabbed 5-50 and Abrar Ahmed finished with 4-27 to dismiss the West Indies for 123 after setting a 251-run target.

The Test lasted fewer than eight sessions on a dry and grassless Multan Stadium pitch, with spinners taking 34 of the 40 wickets to fall.

Pakistan bowled just one over of pace in the match, which resulted in criticism over the strategy to make spin-friendly pitches.

Nevertheless, Aqib Javed defended the approach of creating spin-friendly pitches, highlighting the significance of leveraging home advantage for victory.

“I’ve been hearing a lot, and people are commenting on where our Test cricket is heading,” said Aqib during a press conference. “If these decisions had been made earlier in Test cricket, we might have been in the race for the WTC final.”

The former pacer also highlighted pace-friendly pitches in countries outside Asia, where conditions are challenging for batters.

“We played in South Africa and didn’t field a spinner there due to the conditions. Similarly, pitches in Australia and England favor pace bowlers,” he stated.

“Every country prepares pitches according to their advantage to win matches. I don’t understand the problem with spin-friendly wickets.

“If pace bowlers take wickets, people say cricket is progressing, but if spinners take wickets, they say cricket is going backwards. I don’t understand this.”

Former Pakistan batter suggests resting Babar Azam for second West Indies Test

Former cricketer Basit Ali has advised the Pakistan team management to rest their star batter, Babar Azam, for the second Test against the West Indies to help preserve his confidence.

Babar returned with forgettable scores of 8 and 5 in the first Test against West Indies, which Pakistan won by 127 runs on a spin-friendly pitch at Multan Stadium.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Basit Ali stated that playing on such pitches will diminish Babar’s confidence ahead of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

“Pakistan is damaging Babar’s confidence when he has just regained his rhythm. Since Pakistan won’t qualify for the WTC final, it would be wise to rest Babar,” said Basit.

“If you want to keep him in the Playing XI, prepare better pitches.

“Babar struggled in the first Test [against West Indies], but he found his form in South Africa [earlier this month], scoring runs in both ODIs and Tests.”

For the unversed, Babar was dropped from the Test team owing to his bad form after the first match of the home series against England last year.

However, he returned to the team during the two-match Test series against South Africa and scored 193 runs at an average of 48.25, including three half-centuries.

Notably, the second Test between Pakistan and West Indies will be played at the same venue from January 25-29.

Ramiz Raja lauds Rizwan, Saud after Pakistan’s victory over West Indies

Former Pakistan Test cricketer and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja praised Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel for their batting performance in the first innings of the opening Test against the West Indies.

Pakistan completed their dominant 127-run victory over the West Indies in the first of a two-match Test series on Sunday.

Following Pakistan’s victory, Ramiz Raja shared his opinion in a video on his YouTube channel, highlighting the strategy to dismantle opponents with a spin.

“Pakistan pocketed this test match with authority. This square-turning pitch, much like the template set after the England series, completely exposed the West Indies’ lack of quality when it comes to handling spin,” said Ramiz.

“Their batters were not equipped to deal with the conditions or our heavy-duty spin attack.”

The former captain highlighted the unique skills each spinner—Abrar Ahmed, Noman Ali, and Sajid Khan—brought to the team, which contributed to Pakistan’s victory.

Follow us on our Official WhatsApp channel

“Each bowler brought something unique to the table, adjusting seamlessly to the wear and tear of the ball,” he added.

“Abrar is relentless with his accuracy, Noman’s variations on a spinning track are world-class, and Sajid’s angles make him a constant threat.

“Together, they formed a perfect spin attack that dominated the opposition.”

He also appreciated the 141-run partnership between Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel in the first innings. The two batters joined hands when the team was struggling on 46-4 and helped the team post a fighting total of 230.

“On a challenging pitch, the way Rizwan and Shakeel handled the pressure was brilliant. They turned the tide in Pakistan’s favor when it mattered most,” Ramiz Raja stated.

“Even though Pakistan’s batting stumbled in the second innings, they had already moved so far ahead that 250 was unachievable for the West Indies.”
