It’s worth noting that Zimbabwe defeated Pakistan in the first ODI of the three-match series by 80 runs on the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method due to heavy downpour here on Sunday.

Pakistan, chasing a target of 206, were in trouble at 60/6 in 21 overs when heavy rain halted the play. With the weather preventing any further action, the umpires called off the match, handing victory to the hosts, who were 80 runs ahead of the DLS par score.

Zimbabwe defeat Pakistan in first ODI by 80 runs on DLS method

BULAWAYO: A combined team effort propelled Zimbabwe to defeat Pakistan in the first ODI of the three-match series by 80 runs on the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method due to heavy downpour here on Sunday.

Pakistan, chasing a target of 206, were in trouble at 60/6 in 21 overs when heavy rain halted play at Queens Sports Club.

With the weather preventing any further action, the umpires called off the match, handing victory to the hosts, who were 80 runs ahead of the DLS par score.

The Green Shirts had a shaky start to the run chase as both opening batters fell prey to Blessing Muzarabani inside five overs.

Kamran Ghulam (17) and Mohammad Rizwan (19*) played cautiously to help the team recover but Sean Williams removed the former to break Pakistan’s momentum.

The visitors slipped from 40-2 to 58-6 in quick succession with the skipper watching the wickets fall on the other end.

Rizwan (19) and Aamir Jamal (0) were on the crease when the rain stopped the action.

Earlier, Zimbabwe, after being invited to bat first by Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan, were bowled out for 205 in the 41st over.

The hosts started strongly, with openers Joylord Gumbie and Tadiwanashe Marumani adding 40 runs in the first six overs.

However, their partnership ended in disappointment when Gumbie was run out after a mix-up in the sixth over. He scored 15 runs from 17 balls, including three boundaries.

Marumani built brief partnerships with Dion Myers, Craig Ervine, and Sean Williams but was dismissed in the 16th over, leaving Zimbabwe at 83/4. He contributed 29 runs off 41 balls, hitting two fours and a six.

After his departure, Zimbabwe’s middle order crumbled, and they were reduced to 125/7 by the 26th over.

Sikandar Raza and Richard Ngarava then steadied the innings with a crucial 62-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Raza played a determined knock of 39 from 56 balls, including six boundaries, before being dismissed by debutant Faisal Akram in the 38th over.

Faisal struck again in the same over, removing Blessing Muzarabani for a duck, reducing Zimbabwe to 187/9.

Ngarava showed resilience, top-scoring with 48 runs from 52 balls, hitting six boundaries and a six. He, along with Trevor Gwandu (3*), helped Zimbabwe cross the 200-run mark with a fighting 10th-wicket stand.

For Pakistan, Faisal Akram and Agha Salman were the standout bowlers, taking three wickets each. Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, and Aamir Jamal chipped in with a wicket apiece.

Rizwan stresses importance of Zimbabwe ODIs for Champions Trophy preparations

BULAWAYO: Pakistan white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan on Saturday stressed that the ODI series against Zimbabwe will serve as a key preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Pakistan and Zimbabwe will lock horns in a three-match ODI series followed by as many T20Is at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo from 24 November to 5 December.

This will be Pakistan’s second ODI series this month after they beat Australia 2-1 earlier in November in their own backyard.

Former fast bowler and member of the National Men’s Selection Committee, Aaqib Javed has been appointed the interim white-ball head coach of the Pakistan team until the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at home.

The ODI series against Zimbabwe will be his first assignment after he joined the team on Friday.

Pakistan’s ODI squad, led by Mohammad Rizwan, reached Zimbabwe on Wednesday and had three extensive practice sessions in the lead-up to the ODI series.

“The ODI series against Zimbabwe is equally important for us as we aim to test out our bench strength and plan towards the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at home,” said Rizwan.

“With the help of the Almighty, we aim to keep the winning momentum from out last ODI series going.

“With the trio of our main players resting up after the Australia series, it will be exciting to see other players putting their hands up and helping the team at various times during the 50-over contests.

“Having played against the home team various times, we do expect them to put up challenges for us during the three ODIs but crucially this series will also test out temperament in terms of backing up a historic win in Australia.”

In the 15-member squad Arafat Minhas, Babar Azam, Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi have been replaced with the uncapped duo of Abrar Ahmed and Ahmed Daniyal along with pacer Shahnawaz Dahani and Tayyab Tahir.

Pakistan and Zimbabwe last faced each other in the 50-over format in November 2020 in Rawalpindi where Pakistan beat the visitors 2-1. Pakistan, on their last visit to Zimbabwe, whitewashed the Chevrons in a five-match ODI series in July 2018.

Zimbabwe Select thrash Pakistan Shaheens to seal series win

HARARE: Mubasir Khan’s fighting century failed to trump Craig Ervine’s marathon 195-run knock as Zimbabwe Select thrash Pakistan Shaheens by 32-run in the sixth one-day to seal the six-match series 4-2.

Set to chase a mammoth 386, Pakistan Shaheens’ batters showcased a valiant effort in the pursuit but ended up 32 runs short as they were bundled out for 353 in the final over despite Mubasir Khan’s century.

Pakistan Shaheens had a dismal start to the run chase as they were three down for just 50 runs in the 10th over.

Following the early setback, wicketkeeper batter Rohail Nazir and skipper Kamran Ghulam launched the recovery as the pair stitched a gritty 108-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

They were looking in control until Luke Jongwe got rid of Kamran Ghulam briefly after the captain amassed his half-century. He struck 56 in 47 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and a six.

Rohail Nazir then received another strong firm at the other end as Mubasir Khan joined him in the middle after Ghulam’s dismissal and they put on another vital partnership for Pakistan Shaheens.

The duo of Nazir and Khan added 98 runs to the team’s total at a brisk rate but Sean Williams dented their expedition with a timely blow by removing the former, who fell just 13 runs short of his well-deserved century.

Nazir smashed six boundaries and three sixes on his way to a 91-ball 87.

Mubasir Khan stood his ground firm while Pakistan Shaheens’ lower order batters failed to lend significant support to the young batter at the backend and thus the former fell short of propelling his side to glory despite a brilliant century knock, which ended in the final over.

Mubasir Khan top scored for Pakistan Shaheens with a quickfire 115 off just 77 balls, laced up with six boundaries and eight sixes.

Sikandar Raza led the bowling charge of Zimbabwe Select with 3/66, followed by Blessing Muzarabani, Tanaka Chivanga and Jongwe, who took two wickets each.

Zimbabwe Select thwarted Pakistan Shaheens’ bowlers as they piled up a humongous total on the scoreboard at the back of an astonishing knock by Craig Ervine.

The home side had a contrasting start to their innings after they were put into bat first as Zimbabwe Select lost an early wicket on the second delivery of the innings after Mohammad Ali dismissed Joylord Gumbie for a duck.

Following an early hiccup, Craig Ervine and Innocent Kaia launched the recovery as the pair built a strong partnership for the second wicket.

The duo of Craig Ervine and Innocent Kaia added 187 runs to the total before Mohammad Ali struck again in the 28th over and devoided Kaia of his well-deserved hundred.

Kaia fell just eight runs short of the landmark as he scored a brisk 92 off just 79 deliveries, laced up with 10 boundaries and three sixes.

Meanwhile, Craig Ervine stood his ground firm after Kaia’s dismissal and stitched brief partnerships with Sikandar Raza (15), Sean Williams (20), and Wessly Madhevere (8) before finally receiving significant support from Ryan Burl.

The sixth-wicket partnership between Craig Ervine and Ryan Burl (31 off 18) changed the momentum of the game as the duo added 71 runs in just 34 deliveries until both perished in the final over.

Craig Ervine smashed 22 boundaries and six sixes on his way to a magnificent 195 runs in just 148 deliveries.

For Pakistan Shaheens, Aamer Jamal and Mohammad Ali bagged two wickets each while Qasim Akram and Mehran Mumtaz struck out a batter each.

Omair, bowlers star as Pakistan Shaheens stay alive in one-day series

HARARE: Omair Bin Yousuf played a scintillating knock of 89 not out before bowlers decimated Zimbabwe Select to power Pakistan Shaheens to a massive 177-run victory in the fifth one-day of the six-game series on Thursday.

Set to chase a massive 316-run target, the Zimbabwe Select batting lineup struggled against the ruthless Pakistan Shaheens’ bowling attack and could score a meagre 137 before bundling out in the 32nd over.

The hosts started off poorly in pursuit of the total and kept losing wickets at regular intervals with only Milton Shumba offering some retaliation with a gritty 46-ball 41, which featured five boundaries.

Besides Shumba, opening batter Tadiwanashe Marumani (19), Wessly Madhevere (15) and skipper Sean Williams (15) remained the notable run-getter for Zimbabwe Select amid a dismal show with the bat.

Whereas, six of the Zimbabwe Select batters could not make it into the double digits which paved the way for a resounding 177-run victory for Pakistan Shaheens.

Qasim Akram and Shahnawaz Dahani led the bowling attack for Pakistan Shaheens with three wickets each, followed by Mehran Mumtaz’s 2/36 while Mohammad Ali and Aamer Jamal made one scalp each.

The 177-run victory in the fifth one-day bolstered Pakistan Shaheens to stay alive in the six-match series as the visitors reduced Zimbabwe Select’s advantage to 3-2 with a game to spare.

Omair Bin Yousuf built on a superb 139-run start given by openers Imran Butt and Haseebullah Khan to steer Pakistan Shaheens to 314/6 in 50 overs after they were put into bat.

Imran scored 64 from 65 balls with the help of seven fours and a maximum while wicket-keeper batter Haseebullah made a 77-ball 62, laced with nine boundaries.

Sikandar Raza’s 24th over gave Zimbabwe Select a much-needed respite as both openers were sent back to the hut in a matter of three balls.

Omair Yusuf, however, continued his brilliant form from the previous match, where he scored a sensational 156 off 126 deliveries, and top-scored for his side in this game as well.

He smashed seven boundaries and a six while playing at a strike rate of over 100.

While he remained undeterred at one end, Rohail Nazir (16), Kamran Ghulam (12), skipper Hussain Talat (7) and Qasim Akram (13) failed to make significant contributions in the middle.

However, all-rounder Aamer Jamal made an unbeaten 24 from 18 balls to give a helping hand to Omair Yusuf in the end.

For Zimbabwe Select, Brandon Mavuta bagged two wickets while Sikandar Raza and Luke Jongwe took a scalp each.
