Bangladesh beat Pakistan Women in a super over thriller

Bangladesh won the second ODI against Pakistan in the Super Over after the match at Shere Bangla National Stadium ended in a dramatic tie with the three-match series now squared at 1-1.

Pakistan made seven runs for the loss of two wickets (Iram Javed and Bismah Maroof) in five balls of the one-over eliminator before Bangladesh reached the target on the final delivery of the Super Over, making 10-1 in reply.

Pakistan were 153-6 in the 47th over in pursuit of the 170-run target before a collapse left them needing three in the last over with one wicket in hand. Nashra Sundhu, who came out to bat No.10, was run out on the penultimate ball with the scores level.

Pakistan’s opening pair of Sidra Amin and Sadaf Shamas provided a 41-run start to the innings. After the departure of Sidra (22, 43b, 3x4s), Bismah was the next batter to return back to the pavilion for nought off three balls.

Sadaf was joined by Aliya Riaz and the pair added 23 runs for the third wicket before Sadaf departed for 29 off 83 balls, which included three fours. Aliya was next to go not before scoring a 28-ball 21, hitting two boundaries.

At that stage of the innings, captain Nida Dar was joined by Iram Javed and the pair stitched another 25 runs. Right-handed batter Iram, who was included in the side in today’s game in place of injured Muneeba Ali, scored 15 runs off 31 balls, smashing two boundaries.

With 70 runs required and five wickets in hand, wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi joined Nida and the pair added 28 runs in the t0tal before Nida got out for 27 off 47 balls, hitting a four.

Najiha and Diana later added a vital 25 runs for the seventh wicket before a flurry of wickets deterred the charge.

Earlier, after Bangladesh opted to bat first for the second time in as many games, Pakistan bowlers restricted them to 169 for nine in their 50 overs. Captain Nigar Sultana top-scored for her side with a 104-ball 54, which included three fours.

The wicketkeeper-batter added a 49-run partnership for the third wicket with opening batter Fargana Hoque (40, 88b, 3x4s).

For Pakistan Women, left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal, who bagged four wickets in the first ODI, took two for 32 in 10 overs today. Fellow left-arm spinner Nashra bagged two wickets for 27 in her quota of 10 overs.

Najiha, playing her second ODI, enacted four stumpings becoming only the second Pakistan wicket-keeper to do this in an ODI innings. Batool Fatima achieved this feat in 2004 against the West Indies in Karachi.

Pakistan Women and Bangladesh will now play the third and final ODI of the series on Friday, 10 November.

Bangladesh Women edge Pakistan in low-scoring first T20I

CHITTAGONG: Nahida Akter returned with astonishing figures of 5/8 and powered Bangladesh Women to edge Pakistan Women by five wickets in the first T20I of the three-match series here on Wednesday.

Put into bat first by Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana, Pakistan Women’s batting lineup failed completely and could only accumulate 82 runs before being bundled out in the final over.

The touring side, after 12 overs, were 52/2 with experienced batters Bismah Maroof and Nida Dar at the crease before both set batters perished in the next two successive overs.

Pakistan Women’s captain Nida Dar scored 14 in 21 deliveries with the help of a boundary while Bismah Maroof top-scored with a 29-ball 20.

Pakistan Women then lost three more wickets in quick succession and thus slipped to 67/7 in 16.3 overs.

Coming out to bat at number six, Natalia Pervaiz then added valuable runs at the backend with her 16-ball 15 before perishing in the penultimate over.

Bangladesh Women’s bowlers then ran through Pakistan’s batting tail and booked the visitors on a modest total.

Nahida Akter spearheaded Bangladesh’s bowling attack with a five-wicket haul while Shorna Akter, Rabeya Khan and Sultana Khatun contributed with a wicket apiece.

In response, Bangladesh Women completed the pursuit for the loss of five wickets and three balls to spare.

The home side had a shaky start to the 83-run pursuit as they were two down for 33 in 9.5 overs.

Skipper Nigar Sultana then joined Murshida Khatun in the middle and put together a vital 24-run partnership before the latter perished in the 15th over.

Khatun scored a cautious 40-ball 23 with the help of two boundaries.

Bangladesh Women then lost two more wickets in the modest run chase but their captain Nigar Sultana stood her ground firm and led the home side to a narrow victory in the final over.

She top-scored with an unbeaten 26. Her 28-ball knock featured three boundaries.

Pakistan earn automatic qualification for Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

DUBAI: Pakistan women’s cricket team have qualified for the next year’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup credit to being the highest-ranked team outside of six direct qualifiers and the host.

International Cricket Council named the eight automatic qualifiers for the next edition of the Women’s T20I megaevent on Tuesday as per the qualification process.

Australia, New Zealand and South Africa booked direct qualifications for being the top three teams of Group 1 in the league stage of the recently-concluded ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa. Similarly, England, India and the West Indies make it from Group 2.

Bangladesh qualify as hosts of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup while Pakistan earn qualification by virtue of being the next highest-ranked team in the team rankings as of 27 February 2023.

The remaining two spots of the 10-team tournament will be filled through a Global Qualifier to be held in early 2024. The dates and venues of this tournament will be announced later.

Sri Lanka and Ireland are the only participating teams from this year’s tournament which did not receive automatic qualification. Sri Lanka are currently ranked eighth in the rankings while Ireland are 10th.

It is pertinent to mention here that Australia crowned the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup for the sixth time after beating South Africa in the final of the eighth edition of the tournament on Sunday.

Schutt, Perry sail Australia to convincing win against Pakistan in first T20I

SYDNEY: Megan Schutt ran through the Pakistan batting line with her maiden five-wicket haul before veteran Ellyse Perry smashed a crisp half-century to hand Australia Women’s team a commanding eight-wicket win over Pakistan in the first T20I, here on Tuesday.

Schutt produced career-best figures, 5 for 15, as she led the energetic Australian bowling attack that confined Pakistan to a paltry total of 118 after they opted to bat first.

Australia, in return, eased past the target with 38 balls to spare. Perry who claimed 2 for 3 in her two overs, showed her batting class as well, as she went unbeaten on 57 from 40.

Perry came out to open for Australia in place of Beth Mooney, along with skipper Meg Lanning, who was beaten by an excellent arm ball from Sadia Iqbal in the second over.

Tahila McGrath held the crease for some time with Perry before she was cleaned up by Nida Dar in the 8th over for 14.

Ashleigh Gardener (30 off 19), however, stood rock solid with Perry and denied Pakistan further breakthroughs as the two gathered unbeaten 64 runs to take Australia home.

Earlier, Omaima Sohail and Ayesha Naseem put up a monetary fightback lower down the order after Pakistan were once stuck at 57/5 in 10.4 overs. Omaima made 30 from 36 balls while Ayesha scored 24 off 20 balls.

With yet another disappointing outcome following a 3-0 ODI series whitewash, Pakistan are still searching for their first win of the tour with only two T20Is now left to be played.
