Ricky Ponting reveals reason for rejecting India’s head coach role

Legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting has revealed that he was offered to become head coach of India, however, he declined the offer.

Reports surfaced that Ponting was contacted to take up the role after current Indian head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that he will not be continuing after the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Ponting confirmed that he was approached for the job and he would have loved to accept the offer, but his current commitments did not allow him to do so.

“I’ve seen a lot of reports about it,” Ponting told the ICC Review. “There were a few little one-on-one conversations during the IPL, just to get a level of interest from me as to whether I would do it.

“I’d love to be a senior coach of a national team, but with the other things that I have in my life and wanting to have a bit of time at home…everyone knows if you take a job working with the Indian team you can’t be involved in an IPL team, so it would take that out of it as well.

“Also, a national head coach is a 10 or 11-month of the year job, and as much as I’d like to do it, it just doesn’t fit into my lifestyle right now and the things that I really enjoy doing.”

The three-time World Cup winner is currently the head coach of Delhi Capitals in IPL and Washington Freedom in MLC. He is also working as the head of strategy at Hobart Hurricanes in BBL.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently in the process of seeking applications from potential candidates to become the next head coach for a three-and-a-half-year period. The deadline for submitting applications is May 27.

David Warner scored 38 runs against Pakistan before he was dismissed by Salman Ali Agha after being dropped earlier by Abdullah Shafique when he was at 2.

He surpassed former captain Steve Waugh, who scored 18,496 in 548 innings at an average of 41.65.

The southpaw is now only behind the two-time World Cup-winning captain, Ricky Ponting, who has accumulated 27,368 runs in 667 innings during a career spanning 17 years.

Ponting heaps praises on Babar for winning double ICC Awards

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting hailed star batter Babar Azam, who bagged two major ICC men’s cricket awards, saying he is on the ‘upward curve’ and may end up as Pakistan’s ‘all-time greatest’.

Pakistan skipper Babar, who enjoyed a remarkable year with the bat in all three formats, on Thursday claimed the ICC ODI Men’s Cricketer of the Year Award before getting his hand on the most coveted Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year for 2022.

Speaking on the latest episode of The ICC Review, Ponting heaped praises on Babar, highlighting his sound foundation and adaptability as factors that contributed to his meteoric rise across each format.

“Technically, he’s very good,” said the two-time World Cup-winning captain as quoted by ICC.

“He plays spin bowling very well, he plays fast bowling really well, and he’s been able to adapt to different conditions across the world – which is what separates the great players from the good players.”

“The great players are also very strong mentally. You’ve only got to look at when he plays, how long he bats for in Test matches, how he controls the innings in one-day games, how he’s sort of got the ability to go up and down the gears as a batsman when the game and the situation needs him to.”

Ponting, however, expressed that the right-handed batter was probably not at his peak, adding that “most batters come into their prime in the start of their early thirties.”

“You’re sort of working on your game and improving your game right through to a certain point. And that for most guys is it. You look at where Steve Smith and (David) Warner and those guys have been. Steve Smith is probably playing as well as he’s ever played now, along with guys like Kane Williamson as well in their early thirties.

“So I think Babar’s still got a little bit of improvement to come, which is a pretty scary thought with what he’s been able to do, pretty much across all three formats over the last three, four years. I love watching him play. I think there’s some room for improvement, let’s hope we see it.”

Babar had an unforgettable year with the bat as he was the only player to breach the 2000-run mark in the calendar year 2022. His 2598 runs from 44 matches came at an average of 54.12, which included eight centuries and 15 fifties.

The 28-year-old, who has been ruling the ODI chart since July 2021, is in the top five rankings across each format while his consistent performances earned him a place in the ICC Test Team of the Year besides leading the ICC ODI Team of the Year for the second time in a row.

Babar’s exceptional batting class is much more than just the numbers as it came with the additional burden of captaining the side in all three formats.

Pakistan claimed 14 wins from 26 matches through 2022, including eight out of nine victories in ODIs, under Babar’s leadership. He also led his team to the T20 World Cup final last year.

Ponting believed Babar had a lot to improve on the captaincy front especially his ability to handle pressure in tense encounters.

“He looked like he got a little bit flustered at times at the T20 World Cup, certainly the game against India when things got really tight at the end,” said Ponting while admitting “being a captain of the T20 team is never an easy thing to do.”

“I’m sure with a bit more experience under his belt, like he’s done with his batting, I’m sure he’ll find the right way to lead and be a very successful captain of Pakistan,” he added.

Furthermore, the ex-Australian captain opines that the Pakistan skipper may rank among the best cricketers Pakistan has ever produced by the time he ends his career.

Ricky Ponting shifted to hospital after health scare: reports

‘I would fear an opposition that has Virat in it’ says Ricky Ponting

DUBAI: Australia legend Ricky Ponting has thrown his support behind former top-ranked batter Virat Kohli, who has been struggling recently, saying that he would be afraid of an Indian team that included Virat.

Ponting, in the latest episode of ICC Review, backed the former Indian captain Kohli by stating that the latter still has a meaningful impact and also that as an opposing captain, he would fear a side that comprised Virat.

“I think if I was an opposition captain or an opposition player, I will be fearing playing an Indian team that has Virat Kohli in it, more than I would be one that doesn’t have him in it,” Ponting asserted.

“I know there have been some challenges for him, it’s been a difficult time,” he added.

The former Australian captain then expanded his support for the struggling right-handed batter by claiming that every great has been through it at some stage of his career.

“But every great player that I have seen in this game has been through it at some stage, whether that’s a batsman or a bowler, they have all been through it,” Ponting claimed.

“And somehow, the best [players] find a way to rebound and respond, and it’s only a matter of time before Virat does that,” he maintained.

The World Cup-winning Australian captain also predicted that if India opt to omit Virat for the upcoming T20 World Cup then there might be no way back for him, while also claiming if he would be the authority then he would keep pushing him, knowing the upsides of backing.

“If you leave Virat out of the eve of the World Cup, and someone comes in and has a reasonable tournament, it will be hard for Virat to get back in it,” Ponting said.

“If I was India, I will keep pushing with him, because I know the upside. If they actually get him back confident and [play] as well as he can, that upside is better than most. So I think if I was a captain or a coach around the Indian [set-up], I will be making life as easy as possible for him to feel as comfortable as possible, and just wait for him to flick the switch and start scoring runs again,” he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that Kohli had reached the milestone of 70 international centuries in 2019 and has batted more than 100 innings since then without scoring a century. He scored his last century against Bangladesh.

‘The sky is the limit for Babar Azam’ Ricky Ponting

DUBAI: In a released video on the official website of the International Cricket Council (ICC), former ICC ODI World Cup-winning captain – Ricky Ponting heaped praises on the number one white-ball batter – Babar Azam, said the sky is the limit for him.

Ponting, in the released video, commented, that during Pakistan’s recent tour to Australia, the shots Babar played against Aussies’ strong bowling attack which includes – Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc – made him realize that the 27-years-old is a ‘real deal’.

“During Pakistan’s last tour to Australia, Babar played some lovely front foot drives and back foot punches to the offsides made me realize he is a real deal,” he said.

“This is something that most of the touring batters including England’s Joe Root have failed to do but, Babar made it look so easy. So yeah, I think the sky is the limit for him,” he added.

“He is like the Australian players, when I saw him bat in the second Test in Brisbane, he made batting look so easy in those conditions,” Ponting said.

The legendary captain also claimed that Babar could have been the top Test batter by now if he had played more matches.

“It’s only a matter of time when this guy [Babar] would be the top-ranked batter in Test cricket, and I think he is probably challenging for that position right now,” he added.

“Probably, if he had played some more matches in the last couple of years, he would be knocking the doors to be the top-ranked test batter,” he added.

Ponting then went on to comment on Babar’s recent success in the limited-overs format; including him winning the ICC ODI Player of the Year award, said he has been phenomenal in white-ball cricket for the last four to five years.

“Well, he has been exceptional in the T20 cricket for a couple of years now. He has been breathtakingly good in the white-ball cricket for the last four to five years,” he said.
