Saeed Ajmal slams team management over Babar Azam’s treatment

Former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal has criticised the team management for what he described as the mishandling of star batter Babar Azam, saying the country’s best players deserve confidence and backing.

Speaking on PakPassion, Ajmal stressed that the primary job of coaches is to instil belief in players, not burden them with unnecessary blame.

“When a team moves forward, the role of the coaches is solely to instil confidence in the players. It’s not their responsibility to teach everything,” Ajmal said.

“But if a player is struggling, the coach should help him overcome it, not break his confidence.”

He took aim at the treatment of Babar Azam, who was dropped from the T20I side in December 2024 before being recalled recently for the home series against South Africa.

“Babar Azam was let down to such an extent that people openly said he wasn’t the kind of player needed in T20Is. If you don’t value your players, how can they learn from you?” he questioned.

Saeed Ajmal further highlighted the hypocrisy in how Babar’s T20I record is often dismissed despite being among Pakistan’s most consistent performers.

“Have you seen any of our players play T20 cricket differently? Has anyone’s strike rate consistently exceeded Babar’s? He’s our world-class player, yet he was criticised so publicly that he couldn’t even handle the pressure,” he remarked.

The former off-spinner also took issue with Pakistan’s inconsistent selection policy, suggesting that bringing Babar back was a forced decision after others failed to deliver.

“This decision was taken out of compulsion, when the new players didn’t perform, they went back to the same ones who could at least do something,” he said.

“First, you remove them, then take them back out of necessity. This is the state of affairs.”

Addressing the issue of workload and leadership, Ajmal questioned the logic behind resting an in-form player.

“You’ve put your player under unnecessary pressure,” he added. “First, you removed him from captaincy, and then you gave him rest. If someone is performing, why would you rest him?”

WATCH: Saeed Ajmal bowls Babar Azam with beautiful delivery during exhibition match

PESHAWAR: Veteran off-spinner Saeed Ajmal weaved his magic to castle ace batter Babar Azam during the flood-relief exhibition match between Peshawar Zalmi and Legends XI at the Imran Khan Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

Babar, not part of Pakistan’s T20I squad, opened the innings alongside Yasir Hameed for Peshawar Zalmi.

The duo batted aggressively, smashing the ball to all round the ground, particularly Babar Azam, who was looking good with his elegant stroke play.

Babar Azam raced to 35 off 20 balls before Saeed Ajmal was introduced into the attack. Peshawar Zalmi were cruising at this stage.

Babar Azam first hit Saeed Ajmal for a beautiful six over long on, but Ajmal, known for his Doosra, made a comeback and castled the right-hander with a beautiful delivery.

Babar made 43 off 23 balls, laced with elegant boundaries and a couple of sixes.

Despite a solid opening foundation, Peshawar Zalmi were bowled out for 144 in 14.4 overs.

Chasing a 145-run target, Legends XI fell short by six runs, scoring 138- 6 in 15 overs.

Inzamam-ul-Haq remained unbeaten from 46 off 23 balls, whereas Mahmood scored 34* off 14 deliveries.

For Peshawar Zalmi, Muhammad Irfan and Babar Azam scalped two wickets apiece, while Salman and Zulfiqar Babar took one each.

For context, the charity fixture, organized in collaboration with the Directorate General of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the provincial government, was held under the slogan “Khel Se Khidmat” (Service through Sports).

All proceeds from ticket sales were being directed towards flood relief and rehabilitation projects in the province.

Since the monsoon began in late June, Pakistan floods have affected several regions of the country. The death toll from the Pakistan floods has crossed 800 in the past week.

In light of this tragedy, Peshawar Zalmi and a Legends XI side faced off today in a high-profile charity clash, uniting current stars and former greats on the field for a cause that stretches far beyond cricket.

Saeed Ajmal criticises Babar Azam’s omission from T20I squad

Former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal criticized the decision to exclude Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the T20I squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand.

While speaking during an interview, Ajmal questioned the exclusion of Babar and Rizwan, terming the decision as poor and unfair.

Before being dropped, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were two top run-scorers for Men in Green in the T20I format. The decision to drop the two premier batters from the shorter format has sparked concerns.

“Aapke paas ek hi toh star hai (You have only one star). If you degrade him also, then how will your cricket run? These are the big issues. Our former cricketers should keep their mouths shut,” said Ajmal.

The 47-year-old urged support for Babar Azam, highlighting that every player goes through a bad patch. Saeem Ajmal further stated that even the Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar couldn’t score in each match.

“As a cricketer, one must realise that bad patches are part of a player’s career. You can’t play cricket the same way all your life. Even if you were Tendulkar, you couldn’t score 100 in every match,” he explained.

Saeed Ajmal stated that instead of dropping Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam from the squad, the PCB should have discussed their performances with them.

“The way you’ve removed them is wrong. It’s not like they are the only ones who haven’t scored.”

“Ideally, the selectors should sit with Babar and discuss his workload, so he can come back stronger,” said Ajmal.

He downplayed concerns regarding their strike rate, citing the example of Virat Kohli, who plays with the method of building the innings.

He minimized concerns about their strike rate by citing Virat Kohli’s method of building innings.

“Come on, what aggression are we talking about? If they are your proven matchwinners, you don’t need aggression. Even legends like Virat often pace their innings before attacking—that’s his style,” Ajmal concluded.

Tabraiz Shamsi names THIS Pakistani spinner as his inspiration

South Africa left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has recently expressed his profound admiration for the former Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal.

Shamsi is currently gearing up for the three-match T20I home series against Pakistan, which is set to kick off in Durban tomorrow.

The 34-year-old spinner, in an interview with a local sports website, opened up about the role of spin bowlers in T20 cricket, which is dominated by explosive power-hitters.

“When T20 cricket began, people thought it would mark the decline of spinners, but the opposite happened,” Shamsi said.

“Slow bowlers have always been pivotal to their teams’ success. While powerplays and field restrictions can sometimes make it seem like the game favours batters, spinners have the ability to turn matches in their teams’ favour with strategic planning.”

Shamsi was then asked about his inspirations as a spinner, and he was quick to highlight Saeed Ajmal as a pivotal figure in his cricketing journey.

“It’s hard to pick one, but Saeed Ajmal was truly inspirational. I studied his bowling closely. His ability to spin the ball both ways was exceptional, and our styles are quite similar,” he revealed.

It’s worth noting that following the first T20I match in Durban tomorrow, the action will shift to Centurion for the second T20I, which is scheduled for December 13. The series will culminate with the final T20I in Johannesburg on December 14.
