‘Shaheen came in as the No. 1 bowler’ Middlesex captain Handscomb

LONDON: Australia’s middle-order batter and the captain of the Middlesex County Cricket Club Peter Handscomb heaped praises on the Pakistani left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, termed the latter as the No.1 bowler.

Handscomb, in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, opined about the inclusion of Shaheen in the Middlesex camp and claimed that the left-arm pacer came in as the world’s No.1 bowler and lifted everyone’s spirit in the team.

“It does help [to have] Shaheen Afridi coming in as the No. 1 bowler in the world – that lifts everyone,” Handscomb said.

“He brings something different that we don’t have which is incredible,” he added.

It’s worth noting that Shaheen, who made his first-class debut at Lord’s, got two wickets in two balls for Middlesex against Leicestershire before Louis Kimber blocked down an inswinging yorker that would have given him his hat-trick.

In his side’s dominant ten-wicket victory against the visitors, Shaheen took six wickets – three in each innings.

‘Playing County Championship will benefit Pakistan team’ Shaheen

LONDON: Pakistan’s left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi, who is representing Middlesex in the ongoing County Championship 2022, claimed that the representation of Pakistani players will also benefit the team.

Shaheen, in an interview on the eve of Middlesex’s County Championship match against Leicestershire at Lord’s, commented about the participation of Pakistani players in the tournament and claimed it will benefit Pakistan cricket.

“I think, this year, I saw like nine or 10 players here and that’s good for Pakistan cricket,” he said.

The left-arm pacer also heaped praises on his fellow teammates, saying they are performing really well and that too is good for Pakistan cricket.

“Actually, that’s a good sign for Pakistan cricket — the top cricketers are here. They are performing really well, Hasan and Shan, and everyone performed really well — Haris — so it’s good for Pakistan cricket as well,” he said.

“I think playing anywhere in the world and playing in different conditions always improves your game,” he added.

Shaheen further admitted that Pakistan, despite being a regular visitor of England since the conclusion of the ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup, has ‘underperformed’.

“We did not play good cricket here as a team, so now I think the top guys are all there. So maybe it will be good for us [to get to know] the conditions and the pitches. Maybe this will help the national team as well,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the high-profile Pakistani contingent features former pacer Mohammad Amir, alongside Shaheen’s fellow internationals Mohammad Rizwan, Shan Masood, Hasan Ali, Haris Rauf, Azhar Ali, Mohammad Abbas, and some others.

In a video shared by County Championship, the left-arm speedster can be seen taking his first county wicket including his second on the next ball.

In his side’s first fixture of the 2022 championship against Glamorgan, Shaheen dismissed top-ranked Test batter Marnus Labuschagne and Sam Northeast on consecutive balls in the ninth over.

“So close for Shaheen Afridi. He is on a hat-trick…but Carlson survives the hat-trick ball,” the County Championship wrote.

It is pertinent to mention here that Glamorgan are in trouble on the first day of the ongoing match as the side have lost six wickets for a mere 51 in the first innings.
