West Indies reveal T20 World Cup 2026 squad

ANTIGUA: Cricket West Indies have named a strong 15 member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, slated to begin on 7 February across Sri Lanka and India.

Shai Hope, who missed out on Afghanistan series due to SA20, will lead the 2016 and 2012 edition winners in the mega event with plenty of names to look out for.

With 11 players from the previous edition in 2024, the squad carries considerable depth.

The batting lineup will be bolstered by Rovman Powell, Shimron Hetmyer, Johnson Charles and Shai Hope whereas the all-round department features former captain Jason Holder and Sherfane Rutherford.

Shamar Joseph will lead the bowling attack alongside Jayden Seales and Quentin Sampson. Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie will provide support to the fast bowlers with their spin bowling.

Among the notable exclusions are opener Evin Lewis and pacer Alzarri Joseph who were unable to recover from their injuries.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, West Indies will play five T20Is against South Africa, which will begin tomorrow at Paarl.

It is worth mentioning that West Indies second string side suffered a 2-1 defeat in their recent T20I series against Afghanistan, which was held in the UAE, while most of their experienced players were engaged in SA20.

Hope’s ton keeps West Indies alive in New Zealand Test

A sparkling century by Shai Hope, ably supported by Justin Greaves, had the West Indies 212-4 at stumps on Friday and clinging to the remote chance they can save the first Test against New Zealand in Christchurch.

Hope was 116 not out and Greaves 55, with the pair putting on 140 for the fifth wicket after the West Indies were in dire straits at 72-4.

New Zealand need six more wickets with the new ball six overs away while the West Indies, set a mammoth 531-run target, need a further 319 runs.

The tourists’ cause was helped by injuries to New Zealand’s pace ranks, which have forced captain Tom Latham to be creative with how he manages his bowlers.

A side strain sidelined seamer Nathan Smith for the remainder of the Test, and lead bowler Matt Henry was restricted to 11 overs because of a hamstring issue.

That brought off-spinner Michael Bracewell and part-timer Rachin Ravindra into the attack earlier and longer than expected.

New Zealand bowling coach Jacob Oram said the result could depend on how they use their two fit pace bowlers — Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes — with the new ball.

But New Zealand’s injuries take nothing away from the stubborn performance of Hope, who is enjoying a purple patch despite battling an eye infection, with 56 in the first innings and coming to New Zealand off a century against India.

Hope played briskly with 15 fours and one six and the delight was evident when he raised his bat after driving Ravindra to the covers for a single to bring up his century.

Greaves played his support role admirably, offering two faint edges, but both fell well short of the slip cordon.

After the West Indies went to lunch at 11-0, New Zealand dominated the second session with four wickets.

Duffy removed John Campbell for 15 in the second over after lunch with a seaming delivery that clipped the edge of the bat, and Bracewell held the catch diving in front of first slip.

At the start of his next over, Duffy had Tagenarine Chanderpaul caught behind for six.

Right-arm spinner Bracewell picked up an easy wicket when he accounted for Alick Athanaze (five).

A gentle long-hop, which should have been dispatched to the boundary, went instead to Foulkes at mid-on.

Henry made a brief return to the attack to remove captain Roston Chase for four.

New Zealand resumed the day at 417-4 and added 49 runs in an hour before Kemar Roach ended the innings, taking a return catch from Duffy (10).

Roach also took the wickets of Bracewell and Henry to finish with 5-78.

The New Zealand innings closed with 466-8 with the injured Tom Blundell (hamstring) and Smith unable to bat and in doubt for the second Test, which starts in Wellington next Wednesday.

West Indies outclass Bangladesh in thrilling Super Over finish

MIRPUR: Skipper Shai Hope starred as West Indies edged Bangladesh by one run in a thrilling last-ball Super Over finish to level the three-match ODI series 1-1 here at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday.

Set 213 to win on a tricky surface, West Indies managed to level the score at the end of their 50 overs.

However, in the one-off over, Bangladesh fell short of the 11-run target,  losing the match by just one run.

Akeal Hosein was given the responsibility of defending the total in the Super Over. Albeit, he had a sloppy start— which included five runs from his first ball, including a no-ball and a wide, he eventually managed in defending the score.

Shai Hope starred with the bat, scoring a vital 53 from 67 balls laced with four boundaries, which lifted West Indies out of trouble.

For Bangladesh, Rishad Hossain picked up three wickets in his quota of 10 overs.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, Bangladesh mustered 213-9 in 50 overs.

Soumya Sarkar top-scored with a sluggish 45 from 89 balls, striking three fours and a six. Skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz supported him well, remaining unbeaten with 32 from 58 balls with the aid of one boundary.

Gudakesh Motie remained the standout bowler for West Indies, whereas Alick Athanaze and Akeal Hosein picked up two wickets each.

Notably, West Indies became the first team in history to bowl all 50 overs of spin in an ODI.

Overall, the match had a total of 92 overs of spin, the highest in an ODI. The previous record was 78 overs.

Hope etched his name into the record books after scoring his 18th ODI hundred on just 83 balls.

He remained unbeaten with 120* off 94 balls, an innings peppered with five sixes and 10 boundaries.

Playing in his 142nd ODI, Shai Hope reached the triple-figure mark on the fourth ball of the 47th over with a beautiful cover drive off Naseem Shah’s bowling.

With this century, the right-handed batter surpassed West Indies legend Desmond Haynes in terms of most tons, and he is now only behind Chris Gayle and Brian Lara.

Following his dismissal, Hope crafted a brisk stand of 64 runs with Roston Chase, which stabilized the home side’s innings.

During the last phase of innings, Hope provided the home side innings an impetus, partnering with Justin Greaves and stitching a destructive stand of 110* off just 50 balls to power them to a formidable total of 294 runs.

West Indies break jinx, win first ODI series against Pakistan after 34 years

TAROUBA (Trinidad & Tobago): West Indies on Tuesday broke a 34-year-old jinx by achieving a historic ODI series win against Pakistan here at Brian Lara Stadium.

With a massive 202-run win, the West Indies clinched their first ODI series victory over Pakistan since 1991, taking the series 2-1.

Jayden Seales was named Player of the Series after scalping 10 wickets in three matches.

Chasing a daunting 295-run target, Pakistan crumbled under pressure and were bundled out for just 92 runs in only 29.2 overs.

Pakistan demonstrated a shambolic batting display as pacer Jayden Seales ripped through the top order.

Saim Ayub was the first to go for a three-ball duck, only in the first over, followed by Abdullah Shafique, who also could not open his account and played eight balls.

With Pakistan reduced to 8-2, it was all on the experienced duo of Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam. However, Seales was exceptional with the new ball and cleaned up the Pakistan captain on a golden duck with a beautiful inswinging delivery.

Ace batter Babar Azam did not look comfortable either and was trapped lbw. He only managed to score nine after facing 23 deliveries.

With Pakistan reeling at 23-4 in 8.2 overs, Salman Ali Agha and Hasan Nawaz tried to stabilize the innings and put on a 38 partnership.

However, with the required run-rate creeping up, Hasan Nawaz lost his patience, ending up being stumped after making just 13 from 40 balls.

Nawaz’s wicket sparked a collapse that Pakistan never recovered from, eventually resulting in an all-out on a modest total.

Salman Agha top-scored with 30 off 49 balls with the aid of three boundaries.

For the West Indies, Jayden Seales destroyed the Pakistan batting line-up with figures of 6-18 in only 7.2 overs.

Earlier, after being put into bat, the West Indies posted 294-6  in their allocated 50 overs.

The home side opening conundrum continued with Brandon King falling for a low score for the third time in the series. Green Shirts struck early, removing the right-handed batter for just five runs in only the second over of the match.

Following the opening wicket, Pakistan kept bowling on tight lines and did not allow West Indies to score freely within the fielding restrictions.

At the end of the power play, West Indies could only muster 35 runs with Evin Lewis and Keach Carty on the crease.

Lewis, who was batting cautiously, decided to take on Hussain Talat and smashed two sixes to accumulate 14 runs in the 14th over. He was eventually caught in the next over, scoring 37 off 54 balls with the help of three sixes and a four.

Pakistan further applied the pressure and put the brakes on scoring, which resulted in another wicket. Keach Carty’s sluggish knock off 17 from 45 balls was ended by Abrar Ahmed.

However, Shai Hope held the West Indies innings together, forging crucial partnerships that resulted in a competitive total against Pakistan.

First, he formed a 45-run partnership with Sherfane Rutherford (15 off 40 balls), which brought the total to 113 in 30.3 overs.

Following Rutherford’s dismissal, Shai Hope crafted a brisk stand of 64 runs with Roston Chase, which stabilized the home side’s innings.

Chase, who was looking dangerous, departed after making 36 off 29 deliveries, striking two sixes and three fours. The Green Shirts made a comeback with another quick wicket.

Gukasdesh Motie was caught and bowled, adding just five runs to the team total as West Indies were reduced to 184-6 in 41.5 overs.

However, Shai Hope partnered with Justin Greaves and stitched a destructive stand of 110* off just 50 balls to power them to a formidable total.

Justin Greaves played a cameo of 43 runs from just 24 balls, laced with four boundaries and two sixes.

For Pakistan, Abrar Ahmed and Naseem Shah picked up two wickets each.

Hope, Powell take over West Indies white-ball captaincy from Pooran

ANTIGUA: Cricket West Indies (CWI) have confirmed that Shai Hope and Rovman Powell will be the new captains of the ODI and T20I teams, respectively, taking over the roles from Nicholas Pooran.

Pooran stepped down from the captaincy of both white-ball formats following the West Indies’ forgettable campaign in the last year’s ICC T20 World Cup in November, facing an early exit from the tournament in the first round.

The first assignments for both captains will be the upcoming tour of South Africa in March where the West Indies face the Proteas in three ODIs and three T20Is from 16 to 28 March, following two matches in the ICC World Test Championship, said CWI on Wednesday.

With the 50-Over World Cup in sight later this year, wicket-keeper batter Hope’s foremost challenge as a captain is to earn qualification for West Indies in the tournament as his team is likely to play qualifiers scheduled to be held in Zimbabwe in June.

“To lead a team that is of such incredible significance not only to myself and my teammates but to our legion of fans the world over, is something one dreams of as a child,” Hope said in a CWI statement.

Hope has represented West Indies in 104 ODI games and vice-captained the side on a number of occasions. His exceptional individual performances earned him a place in the ICC ODI Team of the Year for 2022.

PAK v WI: Babar’s ton, Khushdil’s power-show guide Pakistan to victory

MULTAN: Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s record-breaking knock assisted the home side defeat the West Indies by five wickets in the first ODI, here on Wednesday.

Set to chase a commendable 306, the home side got to the total for the loss of five wickets with four balls to spare.

Coming out to chase, Pakistan were off to a similar dismal start to that of the West Indies as Fakhar Zaman fell cheaply after scoring 11 as the home side lost their first wicket for a mere 26.

Pakistan skipper Babar, alongside the left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq then anchored the run chase with a terrific 103-run partnership for the second wicket.

The pair appeared firm before Imam fell in the 25th over after failing to execute a reverse-sweep against Akeal Hosein. The left-handed opener scored 65 off 71 balls with the help of six boundaries.

Following Imam’s departure, Babar joined hands with the wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan and put on another century-plus partnership as the pair took the hosts to 237 before the skipper fell briefly after reaching his 17th ODI century. Babar remained the top-scorer for his side as he scored 103 off 107 balls, including seven boundaries.

https://twitter.com/aryzappk/status/1534611539327602688

Rizwan, on the other hand, brought up his fifth half-century and kept the scoreboard ticking after Babar’s departure. He, however, remained unable to carry his bat till the end as the right-handed batter perished in the 45th over after scoring 59.

Following this, the hosts appeared to be in danger as the side was losing their way in the run chase. Khushdil Shah’s late power-hitting, however, bolstered the side to clinch the victory as the left-handed batter remained unbeaten with his blistering knock of 41. He faced a mere 23 balls and smashed four sixes.

https://twitter.com/aryzappk/status/1534624707839918080

Following his match-winning knock, Khushdil was adjudged the Player of the Match.

For the West Indies, Alzarri Joseph took two wickets, while Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, and Hosein struck out a batter each.

West Indies, after opting to bat first, were off to a poor start as Shaheen Shah Afridi struck in the third over to hand Pakistan their first breakthrough as Kyle Mayers departed after scoring just three.

Following this early disaster, the wicket-keeper batter Hope and Shamarh Brooks joined hands to anchor the innings and frustrated the hosts’ bowlers with an astonishing 154-run partnership for the second wicket.

Brooks, who was looking in top-notch, however, lost his way while attempting to slog the ball against Mohammad Nawaz as Shadab Khan’s full-length provided a much-needed breakthrough to the Green Shirts. He scored 70 off 83 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

Hope, on the other hand, stood firm and went on to smash a magnificent century. He anchored the innings with his brilliant knock while the touring side were losing wickets at an alarming pace.

The right-handed batter Hope carried his bat till the 44th over Haris Rauf’s slower delivery castled him. He remained the top-scorer for his side with 127 off 134 balls, laced with 15 boundaries and a six.

Following his departure, the cameos from Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd accelerated the proceedings and backed the touring side to finish at 305/8 in the allotted 50 overs. Powell scored 32 off while Shepherd made an 18-ball 25.

For Pakistan, Haris led the way with four wickets but was expensive, while Shaheen claimed two for 55. Nawaz and Shadab, on the other hand, made one scalp each.
