BIRMINGHAM: Pakistani wrestler Muhammad Sharif Tahir missed out on gold as he lost to India’s Naveen Naveen in the final bout of the Men’s Freestyle 74kg category finishing with a silver medal in the Wrestling event of the Commonwealth Games 2022, here on Saturday.

With the defeat, Sharif joined the likes of Inam Butt and Zaman Anwar, two other compatriots who claimed a silver medal for Pakistan in the competition.

India’s Naveen stunned Sharif with his moves and scored nine straight technical points to secure gold for his country in the action-packed final bout between the arch-rival wrestlers.

Earlier in the semifinal, Sharif pounded New Zealand’s Cole Hawkins by 11-0 to qualify for the final.

As a result, Pakistan’s overall medal tally in the Commonwealth Games has risen to seven, with three bronze, three silver, and the lone gold by weightlifter Nooh Dastgir Butt.

Young wrestler Sharif displayed sheer dominance over his New Zealand opponent Cole Hawkins and qualified for the final of the 74kg category.

In a one-sided semi-final, Sharif kept Hawkins on the back for the majority of the clash before running away with a consolidating 11-0 victory.

Following his qualification for the gold medal bout, Sharif has confirmed at least a silver medal for Pakistan.

Other national wrestlers Ali Asad and Tayab Raza, on the other hand, failed to produce a similar outcome in their respective semi-finals as they suffered crushing defeats from Indian and Canadian opponents respectively. The two wrestlers will now compete for the Bronze medal in the third-place clash.

As a result, Pakistan’s overall medal tally has risen to six as national wrestlers Inam Butt and Zaman Anwar earlier bagged a silver apiece, while Judo player Shah Hussain Shah and wrestler Inayatullah bagged a bronze each. Weightlifter Muhammad Nooh Dastgir Butt, on the other hand, thus remained the only gold medalist for Pakistan in the ongoing games.

BIRMINGHAM: Pakistan wrestlers Muhammad Sharif Tahir and Ali Asad shone in the quarterfinals of Men’s Freestyle Wrestling 74kg and 57kg respectively in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022.

Sharif, who thrashed Tonga’s John Vake 11-0 in the Round of 16 clash, further marched in the competition as he produced a similar outcome in his quarter-final bout against Canada’s Jasmit Singh Phulka, defeating the latter 10-0.

Following his qualification in the semi-finals, Sharif has now moved one victory away from confirming at least a silver in the 74kg category.

Besides Sharif, another wrestler Ali pounded his Namibian opponent Romio Ricardo Goliath 10-0 in the quarter-final of the 57kg weight category and moved within a victory to confirm another silver medal for Pakistan.

Earlier, national wrestlers Inam Butt and Zaman Anwar lost in their respective gold medal bouts to claim a silver medal apiece for Pakistan.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan has claimed a total of five medals in the ongoing Games as Shah Hussain Shah claimed bronze in Judo on Wednesday. Whereas, weightlifter Muhammad Nooh Dastgir Butt remained the only athlete thus far to win a gold medal for the country in the ongoing global event.
