Corbin Bosch becomes first South African to achieve historic Test feat

CENTURIAN: South Africa all-rounder Corbin Bosch missed a well-deserved debut hundred however he managed to etch his name in the record books on the second day of the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan here on Friday.

Bosch remained unbeaten on 81, laced with 18 fours, as Dane Paterson (12) was dismissed by Saim Ayub, ending a crucial 47-run stand for the final wicket.

Prior to this knock, he returned with bowling figures of 4-63 on the opening day, helping South Africa bundle Pakistan for 211.

These performances earned him a place in the record books as he became the first-ever South African player to score a fifty and take four or more wickets on Test debut.

He came into the team for Keshav Maharaj, who got injured before the first ODI against Pakistan, and made an immediate impact with his all-round exploits.

It’s worth noting that overall Bosch is the 16th player to achieve this historic feat and the third to achieve this in this century.

Former New Zealand captain Tim Southee, who recently retired, was the first to achieve this feat in this century, while Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was the second.

Aiden Markram keeps South Africa afloat against Pakistan’s pace attack

CENTURIAN: Aiden Markram remained unbeaten on 47 as South Africa closed the opening day of the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan with the scoreboard reading 82-3 here on Thursday.

Markram came out to open the innings with Tony de Zorzi, who managed to score a meagre two runs before falling to Khurram Shahzad. The right-arm pacer removed Ryan Rickelton (8) soon afterwards to leave South Africa reeling on 24-2.

Tristan Stubbs (9) joined Markram and helped stabilize the innings with a 42-run stand, which was dominated by the latter.

However, Abbas removed Stubbs to bring South African captain Temba Bavuma to the crease. Bavuma scored 4 runs from 23 balls to support Markram as they helped close out the day without further damage.

Earlier, Pakistan had a horrible start to their innings as they ended the first session with 88 runs on the board at the loss of four wickets.

Pakistan were asked to bat first and the opening pair stitched a 36-run partnership before South Africa pacers wreaked havoc.

Shan Masood (17) and Saim Ayub (14) fell in quick succession before Babar Azam came out to bat dismissed after adding a mere four runs to the total.

Babar Azam lauds Saim Ayub after series-winning performance against South Africa

Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam praised young opener Saim Ayub for his match-winning performance in the three-match ODI series against South Africa.

Saim played a stellar quick 101-run knock from 94 balls, laced with 15 boundaries that included two sixes, in the third ODI and helped Pakistan white-wash South Africa.

This was Saim’s second century in the series, earning him the Player of the Series award with a total of 235 runs and two wickets.

After the match, Babar Azam shared a photo of Saim on his Instagram story, referring to him as “Cheetah” in recognition of his outstanding performance.

During the third ODI, Babar Azam and Saim Ayub built a solid partnership of 114 runs from 133 balls for the second wicket to set-up Pakistan’s total of 308-9.

However, Kwena Maphaka broke the stand as he removed Babar, who scored 52 runs from 71 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

Saim was joined by skipper Mohammad Rizwan (53) and they increased the scoring rate with their 93-run stand that conceded only 75 balls.

Rizwan and Saim fell in quick succession but Salman Ali Agha played a quick-fire knock of 48 runs from 33 balls and added a crucial partnership of 74 runs with Tayyab Tahir (28) to provide a finishing touch to Pakistan’s innings.

In response, South Africa, despite a spirited performance, were bundled for 271 runs in 42 overs.

It’s worth noting that Pakistan became the first-ever team to clean-sweep the Proteas in an ODI series in South Africa.

South Africa name two uncapped players in squad for Pakistan Tests

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Wednesday unveiled a strong squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan, scheduled to commence on December 26.

South Africa has included two uncapped players — all-rounder Corbin Bosch alongside teenage pacer Kwena Maphaka, who is part of the white-ball squad against Pakistan.

Bosch, the son of former international cricketer Tertius Bosch, has received his first call-up to represent his country at the international level. He has scored 1295 runs at an average of 40.46 and taken 72 wickets across 34 first-class matches.

Meanwhile, Maphaka was initially called up to the Test squad for the series against Sri Lanka as a backup for the injured fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, however, he could not get a game.

On the other hand, injured all-rounder Wiaan Mulder and spinner Keshav Maharaj have also been named in the South Africa squad, with the hope of achieving full fitness ahead of the Test series.

Maharaj suffered a groin strain just before the first ODI against Pakistan yesterday. He will undergo a scan later today to assess the severity of the injury.

Meanwhile, Mulder broke his right middle finger while batting against Sri Lanka in Durban last month and is now in the final phase of his recovery.

The Test series against Pakistan is vital for South Africa as they aim to strengthen their chances for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. Currently, they are sitting at the top of the points table following their clean sweep victory over Sri Lanka.

The two-match Test series between Pakistan and South Africa will kick off in Centurion on December 26, meanwhile, the second Test will start from January 3 in Cape Town.

South Africa secure 2-0 series win as rain washes out third Pakistan T20I

JOHANNESBURG: The third and final T20I match between Pakistan and South Africa, scheduled at the iconic Wanderers Stadium, was abandoned due to persistent rain here on Saturday.

South Africa, who were aiming for a clean sweep, sealed a 2-0 series victory, having thumped Pakistan in the first two games.

Despite the anticipation of a thrilling showdown to cap off the series, the day was marred by a persistent barrage of rain, ranging from light drizzles to heavy downpours, accompanied by sporadic lightning strikes.

These conditions not only rendered the pitch unplayable but also thwarted any hopes of even a toss being conducted.

As the day progressed, the weather deteriorated further, with darkening skies and relentless rainfall making it increasingly evident that play would not be possible.

It’s worth noting that this was Mohammad Rizwan’s second consecutive T20I series loss, since becoming Pakistan’s white-ball captain. In his first T20I series, Pakistan succumbed to a 3-0 whitewash against Australia in November.

The two teams will now play a three-match ODI series, starting on December 17 in Paarl. The second and third ODIs will be played in Cape Town and Johannesburg on December 19 and 22 respectively.

Pakistan and South Africa will then engage in a two-match Test series, which will kick off in Centurion on December 26, meanwhile, the second Test will start from January 3 in Cape Town.

Babar Azam breaks Chris Gayle’s all-time T20 record

Pakistan batter Babar Azam surpassed West Indies legend Chris Gayle on Friday to become the fastest batter to amass 11,000 runs in T20 cricket.

Babar reached the elusive milestone during the second T20I against South Africa in Centurion, where he played a quick 31-run knock to set up Pakistan’s total of 206-5.

Chris Gayle achieved the feat in 314 innings, however, Babar Azam took only 298 innings to score 11,000 runs in T20 cricket.

The right-handed maestro is not only the 11th player globally to accomplish this extraordinary feat but also the second from Pakistan after Shoaib Malik.

However, Shoaib and Babar also hold the record for slowest to reach the milestone in terms of strike rate. Shoaib completed his 11,000 runs at a strike rate of 127.47, while Babar’s strike rate was 129.37.

The record for the fastest to 11,000 runs in T20 cricket in terms of strike rate is held by Kieron Pollard, who achieved the feat with a strike rate of a whopping 150.51.

Moreover, Babar Azam has also surpassed 14000 runs in international cricket, marking himself as just the fifth Pakistani batter to reach this prestigious milestone.

Notably, he stands out as the second-fastest Pakistani to achieve this landmark, trailing only the legendary Mohammad Yousuf.

During his brief 31-run innings, Babar smashed one six, which propelled him to equal Shahid Afridi’s tally of 73 sixes in T20I cricket.

South Africa suffer major blow ahead of series against Pakistan

South Africa has faced a significant setback ahead of their upcoming home series against Pakistan, as fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out due to a groin injury.

Lungi Ngidi, who has not played any cricket since the ODI series against Ireland last month, recently underwent a thorough medical evaluation.

This assessment is part of his planned conditioning phase, during which imaging scans were performed and revealed bilateral proximal adductor tendinopathy, a condition affecting the muscles in his groin area.

He will embark on a comprehensive rehabilitation program aimed at restoring his fitness and is expected to make his return to the field sometime in January.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) released an official statement earlier today, announcing that Nigidi would not be part of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka and the all-format home series against Pakistan.

“Proteas Men’s fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, as well as the all-format tour against Pakistan, due to a groin injury,” the statement stated.

“The 28-year-old recently underwent a medical assessment as part of his structured conditioning period, during which scans revealed bilateral proximal adductor tendinopathy. He will now begin a rehabilitation programme and is expected to return to play in January.”

Pakistan eye miraculous semi-final entry as they take on South Africa

SYDNEY: The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 has so far been a bumpy ride for Pakistan as the chances to progress into the final four looks bleak for them but a win against the only unbeaten side of the tournament – South Africa – today could keep them in contention for a semifinal spot.

Albeit the fact that the Babar Azam-led side would not be masters of their destiny even if the results of today’s match come in their favour yet a win over Proteas could help Pakistan maintain their perfect record against the side in the T20 World Cups.

So far, both teams have faced each other three times in T20 World Cups – 2009, 2010 and 2012 – and each time the Green Shirts came out victorious with the barest of the margins.

Proteas, however, have the perfect combination at their disposal to turn the tables around this time, especially facing their furious pace attack would be a major challenge for Pakistan’s top order.

Pakistan would still want their openers – Babar and Mohammad Rizwan – to fire in a must-win match and lay a solid foundation. South African all-rounder David Miller, on the other hand, is keen to exploit the team’s top-order woes to keep them under extreme pressure.

However, with Fakhar Zaman ruling out of the World Cup due to an injury, Pakistan captain Babar would again reshuffle his men to form a perfect combination.

As far as bowling is concern, both teams have immense strength in their bowling attack and have paid both of them well in the mega event thus far.
[totalpoll id=”242113″]

Both teams have won their last Super 12s matches but South Africa’s testing and challenging triumph against India can turn out to be a major morale booster for them, while the Green Shirts also got their first two points with a victory over the Netherlands.

The current situation of the Group 2 points table hints that if Pakistan win today they could drag the qualifications till the last round of the group matches whereas if Proteas defeat Pakistan they will confirm their spot in the final four.
