Athapaththu shines as Sri Lanka deny India a clean sweep in T20Is

DAMBULLA: Sri Lankan Women’s National Cricket Team captain Chamari Athapaththu led the way with a magnificent unbeaten knock of 80 runs to power his side to seal a consolation seven-wicket victory over India in the third T20I on Monday.

Set to chase 139, the hosts comfortably chased down the total in 17 overs with seven wickets to spare at the back of their captain Athapaththu, who displayed determination with her blistering match-winning knock.

Despite starting the proceedings poorly in the run chase; losing the first wicket at a combined total of six. The side made a timely recovery as Athatpaththu and Harshita Samarawickrama anchored the innings with an important 31-run partnership.

The left-handed batter Samarawickrama could not hold her ground for long and perished in the fifth over after scoring 13.

Athapaththu, on the other hand, stood firm and kept the scoreboard ticking at a rapid pace. She put on an astounding 77-run partnership with Nikashi de Silva, who chipped in with her valiant 30.

The captain then put on an unbeaten 27-run partnership with Kavisha Dilhari and scored the majority of runs amid the stand to steer her side to the victory in 17 overs. The skipper remained unbeaten with her 80 off 48 balls, laced with 14 boundaries and a six.

For New Zealand, Renuka Singh and Radha Yadav remained the only two bowlers to pick a wicket each.

Batting first, the Indian batters had a flop show with the bat as the touring side could only manage to post 138/5 in the allotted 20 overs.

The touring captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues led the way for the side; scoring 39 and 33 respectively but remained a touch too slow as they failed to bolster their side to a defendable total.

The left-handed opener Smriti Mandhana and Sabbhineni Meghana also chipped in with 22 each but conceded a lot of deliveries in the proceedings.

For Sri Lanka, Sugandika Kumari, Ama Kanchana, Oshadi Ranasinghe, Inoka Ranaweera made one scalp each.

Despite a crushing defeat at the hands of the hosts Sri Lanka, India Women’s Cricket Team sealed the series by 2-1 as they secured triumph in the opening two encounters.

Jadeja’s all-round heroics propel India to crush Sri Lanka in the first Test

MOHALI: India’s all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja shone with bat and bowl to power the home side to seal a crushing victory by an innings and 222 runs against Sri Lanka in the first Test, here on Sunday.

Jadeja first scored an unbeaten 175 runs then bettered it with a total of nine wickets in the first match. The left-handed all-rounder became the only cricketer in the world to achieve such a feat.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, resuming at an overnight score of 103/4, could only manage to score 174 before being bowled out. The top-order batter Pathum Nissanka fought hard with his 61, while the rest of the batters remained clueless against Indian bowlers.

For India, their hero of the first Test – Jadeja bagged a five-fer, while Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah picked two wickets each. Mohammed Shami, on the other hand, made one scalp.

After bowling out the opposition for a skimpy 178, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma decided to enforce the follow-on and invited the touring side to bat again.

In the second innings, Sri Lankan batters failed again and could only score 174 before bowling out. Niroshan Dickwella fought hard this time for the Lions while the rest of the batters failed to save the match for the touring side and as a result, India sealed a crushing victory by an innings and 222 runs.

For India, Jadeja led the way again but with Ashwin; claiming four wickets each, while Shami picked two this time around.

Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round power show puts India on top

MOHALI: Ravindra Jadeja played a sensational knock of an unbeaten 175; powering India to 574/8 before the declaration and later joined the wicket-takers to push Sri Lanka on the back foot on the second day of the first Test, here on Saturday.

Resuming at an overnight score of 357/6, India declared their innings at a mammoth 574/8 in the second session, thanks to the unbeaten 175-runs knock of Jadeja.

Coming out to bat on the second day, Jadeja and Ashwin added a further 105-runs into their seventh-wicket stand before the latter perished after scoring a magnificent 67. The right-arm spin bowling all-rounder faced 82 deliveries and smashed eight boundaries in the course of his brilliant innings.

Jadeja, on the other hand, stood firm and kept the scoreboard ticking with a little assistance from the number 10 batter Mohammed Shami. The left-handed batter smashed his Test career’s highest score – 175* before the skipper Rohit Sharma called for the declaration. He faced 228 balls and hit 20 boundaries including three sixes.

For Sri Lanka, Suranga Lakmal, Vishwa Fernando, and Lasith Embuldeniya claimed two wickets each, while Lahiru Kumara and Dhananjaya de Silva struck out a batter each.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, managed to score 108/4 before the conclusion of the second day’s play at the stumps.

The touring openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thrimanne provided a decent start to the side; putting on an important 48-runs partnership before the latter walked back to the pavilion after scoring just 17.

Following this dismissal, the touring side then began to lose wickets at an alarming rate and soon slipped to 103/4.

For India, Ashwin bagged two wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Jadeja took one wicket apiece.

Pathum Nissanka (26*) and Charith Asalanka (1*) will now resume the proceedings for the touring side at 108/4 on the third day of the ongoing Test.

Pant misses out on his century but India takes command against Sri Lanka

MOHALI: India’s wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant missed out on his well-deserved hundred by a mere four runs but the home side piled up 357/6 on the first day of the first Test against Sri Lanka, here on Friday.

The left-handed batter Pant, who scored a quick 96 remained unlucky to reach a triple-figure mark as Suranga Lakmal cleaned him up with a brilliant delivery. The left-hander scored 96 off 97 balls with the help of nine boundaries and four sixes and put his side into the commanding position.

Earlier, after opting to bat first, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal provided a solid foundation to the home side with a brilliant 52-runs partnership for the first wicket. Rohit, who was accelerating his innings quickly, perished after scoring 29 off just 28 balls; smashing six boundaries.

Mayank, too, soon perished after putting on a brief 38-runs partnership with Virat Kohli. He scored 33 off 49 balls, laced with five boundaries.

Virat then recorded an important 90-runs partnership with Hanuma Vihari. The former captain, who was playing his 100th Test match, appeared confident to reach his much-awaited 71st century, perished after Lasith Embuldeniya castled him on 45. The right-handed batter also hit five boundaries.

Following his departure, Vihari also walked back to the pavilion after scoring a magnificent half-century. The young batter scored 58 off 128 balls, laced with five boundaries.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja then made sure that the side do not lose further wickets as the pair put on an unbeaten 25 runs partnership before the stumps on the opening day.

Ashwin (10*) and Jadeja (45*) will now resume the proceedings for the home side at 357/6 on the second day of the first Test.

For Sri Lanka, Embuldeniya claimed two wickets, while Lakmal, Vishwa Fernando, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Lahiru Kumara struck out a batter each.

Bowlers drive India to eighth U19 Asia Cup title

DUBAI: Indian bowlers annihilated Sri Lanka’s batting line-up before Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s half-century guided the side to their record-extending eighth Under-19 Asia Cup title.

Set to chase 102 from 32 overs, as per Duckworth–Lewis–Stern method, India completed the run-chase in the 22nd over; winning the match by nine wickets.

The winning side, however, halted by a poor start in the run-chase, as Harnoor Singh departed cheaply after scoring just five. The men in blue lost their first wicket for a mere eight runs.

Raghuvanshi and Shaik Rashid, however, batted brilliantly and drove their side to the glory. The pair recorded an unbeaten 96-runs partnership. Rashid scored 31 off 49 balls, followed by the top-scorer – Raghuvanshi, who scored an astonishing half-century; scoring 56 off 67 balls, laced with seven boundaries.

For the Lions, only Yasiru Rodrigo picked up the only wicket.

Batting first, the Lions’ batters struggled completely, with none of their batters could able to go big. The side, in the end, bowled out for a paltry 106. Raveen de Silva scored 15, followed Rodrigo, who top-scored with his 19.

Indian bowlers, on the other hand, partnered strongly. Vicky Ostwal picked three wickets, while Kaushal Tambe claimed two. Raj Bawa, Ravi Kumar, and Rajvardhan Hangargekar each took one wicket apiece.
