U19 Asia Cup: Suryavanshi’s 171 powers India to big win over UAE

DUBAI: India teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi slammed a 95-ball 171 to propel his side to a 234-run victory over UAE in the opening match of the ACC U19 Asia Cup here at the ICC Academy on Friday.

Chasing a massive 434-run target, UAE could only muster 179-7 in their allotted 50 overs.

Uddish Suri remained the top scorer for UAE with 78* off 106, striking five fours and a six. Prithvi Madhu was the other notable contributor, scoring 50 off 87 laced with four boundaries and two sixes.

In pursuit of a daunting target, UAE could not get going as they lost wickets right from the start. Indian bowlers Henil Patel and Kishan Singh started the proceddings with wicket each.

They set the tone early, and other bowlers followed suit. As a result, half of the UAE’s batters were back in the pavilion at the end of the 11th over.

India further mounted pressure with Noorullah Ayobi’s (3) wicket in the 13th over until Uddish Suri and Prithvi Madhu’s 85-run partnership, which provided them some respite.

However, it was not enough, with the asking rate ballooning, and eventually UAE fell short by a hefty margin.

For India, Deepesh Devendran scalped two wickets in his seven overs.

Earlier, after being put into bat first, India racked up 433-6 in their 50 overs.

14-year-old Suryavanshi hit 171 off just 95, studded with 14 sixes and nine fours. Aaron George and Vihaan Malhotra scored 69 runs respectively.

The highlight of the Indian innings was a monumental partnership between Suryavanshi and George, who added 212 for the second wicket.

For the UAE, Uddish Suri and Yug Sharma managed to take two wickets in their quota of 10 overs.

The much-anticipated clash between arch-rivals Pakistan and India will be played on Sunday, 14 December.

Suryavanshi eyes rare double in Youth ODIs after shattering Kamran Ghulam’s record

WORCESTER: India’s young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has set his sights on a rare double century in Youth One Day Internationals (ODIs) after breaking Pakistan’s Kamran Ghulam’s record.

The 14-year-old batter broke the record for the fastest ton by scoring an impressive 52-ball century against England Under-19s here on July 5.

Previously, the record at the Youth level belonged to Kamran Ghulam of Pakistan, who blasted a century off 53 balls against England back in 2013.

With his sublime century, Vaibhav also became the youngest player to score a hundred in Youth ODIs, surpassing Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto, who reached the milestone at 14 years and 241 days.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made headlines during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, smashed 13 fours and 10 sixes on his way to 143 off just 78 balls, propelling  India Under-19s to a massive total of 363-9 in their allocated 50 overs.

After India’s 55-run victory in the match, Vaibhav Suryavanshi credited India’s red-ball skipper Shubman Gill for his record-breaking feat.

“I didn’t realise I had broken the record. Shubman Gill’s 100 and 200 really motivated me. He kept going and building on his innings,” said Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

He expressed that his goal was to bat longer while aiming for a double century in the future.

“I felt I could have batted longer. There were still 20 overs left in the match, and I felt I could have batted for a longer period. I got out to a shot I didn’t execute properly, but my goal was to bat for as long as he did,” he added.

“There’s no celebration. I’ll simply be happy that I performed well for the team. My next goal is to score 200 and bat through all 50 overs,” Vaibhav concluded.

For context, no player has ever scored a double century in Youth ODIs; the record for the highest individual score is 191, held by Sri Lanka’s Hasitha Boyagoda.
