PCB, Cricket West Indies reschedule T20I series

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Cricket West Indies have agreed to postpone the three-match T20I series, which was due to take place in January 2023 in Pakistan, to the first quarter of 2024.

As per the latest development, the decision was made in light of the teams’ preparations for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, which will be held in the West Indies and the USA.

“The decision has been made considering 2024 is an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup year, with the event due to be hosted in the West Indies and the USA in June 2024, and the shortest format matches will, therefore, help both sides to prepare for the tournament,” the PCB stated.

The three-match T20I series in January 2023 is not part of the recently announced 2023-2027 ICC Future Tours Programme.

The West Indies played their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches against Pakistan in Multan in May 2022, while the December 2021 series comprised three T20Is in Karachi.

Rohit’s duck against Windies takes him up in an unwanted list

BASSETERRE: India’s all-format captain Rohit Sharma surged up in an unwanted list of the batters with most dismissals on a single-digit score in T20Is following a golden duck against West Indies in the second match.

West Indies left-arm pacer Obed McCoy, who dismantled the Indian batting line-up with a record-breaking six-wicket haul also forced the Indian captain to surge in the list of the batters with the most single-digits scores in T20Is as he removed the latter on a duck.

The right-handed batter had a forgetful day with the bat as he perished on the first ball of the match, bagging a golden duck.

Following this, Rohit has registered 41 single-digit scores in T20Is, moving just one behind Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien, who tops the list with 42. Pakistan star all-rounder Shahid Afridi is fourth in the list with 37.

 

Furthermore, Rohit has also the most number of ducks (8) by an Indian batter in T20Is. Whereas, his deputy KL Rahul is second on the list with four.

It is pertinent to mention here that the hosts West Indies thrashed India by five wickets in the second T20I to level the five-match series 1-1.

West Indian squad leaves for the country after concluding Pakistan tour

ISLAMABAD: West Indies Men’s cricket team has left for the country from Islamabad International Airport after the conclusion of the three-match ODI series against Pakistan.

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesperson, the touring team reached here in the morning by a special plane from Multan and then flew back from here.

The West Indian side, which reached Pakistan after whitewashing the Netherlands 3-0, suffered the opposite result in their away series against the Green Shirts as the home side blunted the Caribbeans by 3-0.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan grabbed the fourth position in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup Super League following their whitewash series victory over the West Indies. The Green Shirts were standing at the 10th position before the home ODI series.

MULTAN: Pakistan vice-captain Shadab Khan shone with his brilliant all-round performance as he took four wickets after playing a crucial 86-run knock to guide the home side beat the West Indies by 3-0.

Set to chase 270 in 48 overs, West Indies could only manage to score 216 before being bowled out in the 38th over.

The touring side were off to a poor start in the run chase as they lost their first wicket for a mere 25 runs as the left-handed opener Kyle Mayers perished after scoring just five.

The wicket-keeper batter Shai Hope and the right-handed batter Shamarh Brooks then looked to anchor the run chase but failed as the former walked back to the pavilion after scoring 21.

Following his departure, the side began to lose wickets at an alarming rate and were soon slipped from 52-1 to 93-5.

Akeal Hosein and Keacy Carty then put on an important 36-run partnership for the sixth wicket and were looking determined to pull their side out of danger before the latter got deceived by Pakistan’s hero of the day Shadab as the young wicket-keeper Mohammad Haris did the rest behind the wickets.

Hosein, on the other hand, remained firm and kept the scoreboard ticking single-handedly while the tailenders were making their way back to the pavilion after scoring cheaply.

The left-handed batter then also made his way back as he fell to Shadab in the 35th over. He remained the top-scorer for his side with a blistering knock of 60 runs off just 37 balls, laced with two boundaries and six sixes.

The West Indian batting tail had no answers to the strong Pakistan bowling attack and the touring side soon bundled out for 216 in the 38th over.

For Pakistan, Shadab led the way with four wickets while Hasan Ali and Mohammad Nawaz bagged two each. Mohammad Wasim Jr and Shahnawaz Dahani, on the other hand, made one scalp apiece.

Pakistan, after opting to bat first in the third ODI were off to a decent start as the opening pair of Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman put on a brilliant 85-run partnership for the first wicket.

Fakhar, who was struggling to get going, fell in the 17th over as the part-timer Nicholas Pooran castled him for 35.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, who was in sublime form in the ODIs, had a rare failure as he walked back after managing to score a mere one run after Hayden Walsh trapped the right-hander in his legs.

Imam then put on a brief 25-run partnership with the wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan as the former fell briefly after reaching his seventh consecutive ODI fifty. Imam scored 62 off 68 balls with the help of seven boundaries and a six.

Following his departure, the home side began to lose wickets at an alarming rate and slipped to 117/5 in the 25th over.

Pakistan vice-captain Shadab and the left-handed all-rounder Khushdil Shah anchored the inning with a valiant 84-run partnership for the sixth wicket before the latter lost his wicket after scoring 34.

Following his departure, Shadab carried on his valiant knock and kept the scoreboard ticking single-handedly while the tailenders were walking back to the pavilion with small contributions.

The right-handed all-rounder top-scored for the side with a brilliant knock of 86 on just 78 balls, laced with four boundaries and three sixes before Jayden Seales castled him in the final over.

For the West Indies, Pooran led the way with four wickets while Keemo Paul bagged two. Hosein, Walsh, and Seales, on the other hand, made one scalp each.

West Indies Team Analyst hospitalized after stomach discomfort

MULTAN: West Indies cricket team analyst, Avenesh Seetaram has been hospitalized in Multan for treatment after he experienced stomach discomfort last night.

West Indies cricket team announced on their official Twitter account that the team analyst had been taken to the hospital for the monitoring of his health condition as he suffered stomach discomfort and sickness.

“After experiencing stomach discomfort and sickness overnight, the Senior Men’s Team Analyst, Avenesh Seetaram has been admitted to the hospital in Multan for monitoring and rehydration,” tweeted Windies Cricket.

It is pertinent to mention that the West Indies Cricket team has been on their tour of Pakistan for the three-match ODI series. Pakistan have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series while the final match will be played tomorrow.

MULTAN: Pakistan cricket team set numerous records following their victory over the West Indies in the second ODI, here on Friday.

Pakistan’s triumph over the West Indies in the second ODI helped the Green Shirts to maintain their superior record over the latter in ODI cricket as Pakistan have now won 10 consecutive series against the Caribbeans; winning the last ODI series in 1992.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam and the left-handed batter – who are in sublime form in the ODIs have marked themselves again into the record’s book as the two batters have joined Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf and eight batters to score six consecutive half-centuries just after the legendary batter Javed Miandad, who scored a record nine fifties.

Babar, who enjoyed a successful Australia tour carried on his wonderful in the home ODI series against the West Indies as the right-handed batter has scored nine consecutive half-centuries across all formats which is the longest streak of fifty-plus scores for any batter in men’s international cricket.

Babar and Imam as a pair too were impressive as the dynamic duo of Pakistan equalled the record of legendary batters Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Yousuf for the second-most century-plus partnerships for Pakistan in ODIs with eight stands. The pair of Younis Khan and Yousuf, however, led the way with the nine century-plus partnerships for Pakistan in ODIs.

Pakistan’s hero with the ball against the West Indies in the recently-concluded second ODI Mohammad Nawaz became just the second Pakistan bowler after Mohammad Hafeez to concede less than 20 runs in an ODI after 10 overs. Hafeez conceded 15 runs and took two wickets against Bangladesh in 2011, while Nawaz claimed four wickets for 19 runs.

MULTAN: Pakistan bowlers displayed brilliance after the fifties from the captain Babar Azam and the left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq to propel their side to seal a massive victory over West Indies in the second ODI and lead the three-match series 2-0.

Set to chase a commendable 276, the West Indian batting line-up failed and could only score 155 before being bowled out in the 33rd over.

The side were off to a flying start despite losing their last match centurion Shai Hope in the first over as Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks carried the run chase alive as they both ticked the scoreboard at a rapid pace.

The pair appeared solid and almost took the game away from Pakistan before 10 overs as they were scoring at more than six runs per over.

Pakistan captain Babar’s tactics worked for him as his idea of introducing the young pacer Mohammad Wasim Jr proved out to be fruitful as the latter removed the dangerous Mayers in the 10th over. Mayers scored a quick 33 off just 25 deliveries with the help of four boundaries and two sixes.

Following his departure, the touring side proceeded to lose wickets at an alarming rate, falling from 71-1 to 120-7 in a matter of a few overs as their captain Nicholas Pooran also made his way back after scoring 25.

The tailenders then attempted to retaliate but they too could not survive for long against the strong Pakistan bowling attack and the West Indies, in the end, were bowled for a mere 155 runs; handing a massive 120-run victory to Pakistan.

For Pakistan, Nawaz was the pick of the bowlers with his career-best bowling figures as he claimed four wickets for a mere 19 runs, while Wasim Jr and Shadab Khan claimed three and two wickets respectively. Shaheen Shah Afridi, on the other hand, made one scalp.

Pakistan, after opting to bat first, had to fight hard to put a commendable total of 275-8 in the allotted 50 overs as the touring side’s bowlers displayed brilliance.

Coming out to bat, Pakistan openers again failed to provide a solid start to the side as Fakhar Zaman departed early in the seventh over after mistiming the pull short. He made 17 runs off 28 balls and smashed three boundaries.

Following his dismissal, the skipper Babar Azam and the left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq again anchored the innings with their overall fourth century-plus stand in ODI cricket.

The pair appeared firm as both scored the fifties and were eyeing their respective centuries before Imam lost his wicket after a mix-up. He scored a run-a-ball 72 with the help of six boundaries.

Following Imam’s dismissal, Babar put on a brief partnership with Mohammad Rizwan. The pair, however, could only add 42 runs for the third wicket as Babar fell against West Indies’ hero with the ball – Akeal Hosein. The right-handed batter top-scored for the side with 77 off 93 balls, laced with five boundaries and a six.

The Green Shirts began to lose wickets at an alarming rate as Rizwan, Mohammad Haris, and Mohammad Nawaz departed in just four overs.

With the side struggling at 207-6 in the 40th over, gritty cameos from Shadab Khan and Khushdil Shah avoided the wickets spree; scoring 22 each.

The right-arm pacer Mohammad Wasim Jr and Shaheen Shah Afridi then also added valuable runs in the death overs and boosted the home side’s total to 275-8 in the allotted 50 overs.

Wasim remained unbeaten with his quick 17 off just 13 deliveries, while Shaheen scored 15 not-out on a mere six balls.

For the West Indies, Hosein led the way with three wickets, while Alzarri Joseph and Anderson Phillip bagged two wickets each.

MULTAN: Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s record-breaking knock assisted the home side defeat the West Indies by five wickets in the first ODI, here on Wednesday.

Set to chase a commendable 306, the home side got to the total for the loss of five wickets with four balls to spare.

Coming out to chase, Pakistan were off to a similar dismal start to that of the West Indies as Fakhar Zaman fell cheaply after scoring 11 as the home side lost their first wicket for a mere 26.

Pakistan skipper Babar, alongside the left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq then anchored the run chase with a terrific 103-run partnership for the second wicket.

The pair appeared firm before Imam fell in the 25th over after failing to execute a reverse-sweep against Akeal Hosein. The left-handed opener scored 65 off 71 balls with the help of six boundaries.

Following Imam’s departure, Babar joined hands with the wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan and put on another century-plus partnership as the pair took the hosts to 237 before the skipper fell briefly after reaching his 17th ODI century. Babar remained the top-scorer for his side as he scored 103 off 107 balls, including seven boundaries.

Rizwan, on the other hand, brought up his fifth half-century and kept the scoreboard ticking after Babar’s departure. He, however, remained unable to carry his bat till the end as the right-handed batter perished in the 45th over after scoring 59.

Following this, the hosts appeared to be in danger as the side was losing their way in the run chase. Khushdil Shah’s late power-hitting, however, bolstered the side to clinch the victory as the left-handed batter remained unbeaten with his blistering knock of 41. He faced a mere 23 balls and smashed four sixes.

Following his match-winning knock, Khushdil was adjudged the Player of the Match.

 

For the West Indies, Alzarri Joseph took two wickets, while Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, and Hosein struck out a batter each.

West Indies, after opting to bat first, were off to a poor start as Shaheen Shah Afridi struck in the third over to hand Pakistan their first breakthrough as Kyle Mayers departed after scoring just three.

Following this early disaster, the wicket-keeper batter Hope and Shamarh Brooks joined hands to anchor the innings and frustrated the hosts’ bowlers with an astonishing 154-run partnership for the second wicket.

Brooks, who was looking in top-notch, however, lost his way while attempting to slog the ball against Mohammad Nawaz as Shadab Khan’s full-length provided a much-needed breakthrough to the Green Shirts. He scored 70 off 83 balls with the help of seven boundaries.

Hope, on the other hand, stood firm and went on to smash a magnificent century. He anchored the innings with his brilliant knock while the touring side were losing wickets at an alarming pace.

The right-handed batter Hope carried his bat till the 44th over Haris Rauf’s slower delivery castled him. He remained the top-scorer for his side with 127 off 134 balls, laced with 15 boundaries and a six.

Following his departure, the cameos from Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd accelerated the proceedings and backed the touring side to finish at 305/8 in the allotted 50 overs. Powell scored 32 off while Shepherd made an 18-ball 25.

For Pakistan, Haris led the way with four wickets but was expensive, while Shaheen claimed two for 55. Nawaz and Shadab, on the other hand, made one scalp each.
