India thrash Sri Lanka to lift seventh Women’s Asia Cup title

SYLHET: Indian bowlers decimated the Sri Lankan batting lineup by restricting them to a paltry total before Smriti Mandhana scored a brilliant half-century in the run chase and powered her side to a seventh Women’s Asia Cup title.

The final of the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 remained a one-sided affair for India as the side sealed a comprehensive eight-wicket victory with 69 balls to spare, thanks to a brilliant half-century from Smriti Mandhana.

Set to chase a skimpy 66 in the final, the opening pair of Mandhana and Shafali Verma gave their side a flying start as they amassed 32 runs in the fourth over.

Mandhana was the aggressor in the opening stand, while Verma was finding it hard to score freely and fell prey to Inoka Ranaweera after scoring a mere five.

India lost another wicket in the next over as Jemimah Rodrigues departed to the dressing room after scoring just two.

Mandhana then joined hands with Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and put on a match-winning 36-run partnership to propel her side to glory.

The opening batter top-scored for the side as she accumulated 51 off 25 deliveries, laced with six boundaries and three sixes.

Kaur, on the other hand, scored a sensible 11* off 14.

For Sri Lanka, only Kavisha Dilhari and Ranaweera could pick up a wicket each.

Batting first, the Sri Lankan batting lineup failed completely and could only accumulate 65/9 in their quota of 20 overs.

Lower-order batter Ranaweera resisted a bit against a strong Indian bowling attack and remained unbeaten with 18, while Oshadi Ranasinghe could score 13.

The rest of the Sri Lankan batters could not enter into the double figures.

Renuka Singh led the bowling attack for India as she returned with astounding figures of 3/5, while Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Sneh Rana bagged two wickets each.

Women’s Asia Cup: Bangladesh pacer Fariha bags hat-trick on debut

SYLHET: Young Bangladesh pacer Fariha Trisna registered herself in the records book as she became only the second bowler to bag a hat-trick on her T20I debut and powered her side to thrash Malaysia by 88 runs in the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup 2022.

In the 11th match of the continental event, the defending champions set Malaysia to chase a commendable 130, thanks to their skipper Nigar Sultana, who smashed a belligerent half-century.

Trisna then triggered a match-defining collapse in the sixth over of Malaysia’s innings and struck thrice in as many deliveries to power her side to bundle out the opposition for a paltry 41.

The left-arm pacer castled Malaysian captain Winifred Duraisingam (5) on the second delivery of her third over before trapping Mas Elysa (0) in her legs on the next delivery.

The 20-year-old pacer then deceived Mahirah Izzati Ismail with an inswinger to complete her astonishing hat-trick.

Following her remarkable achievement, Trisna became the second Bangladeshi bowler to bag a hat-trick in the shortest format of the game.

Fahima Khatun was the first Bangladeshi woman to claim a hat-trick.

Pakistan thrash Malaysia to start Women’s Asia Cup on a winning note

SYLHET: Pakistan bowlers wreaked havoc over the Malaysian batting line-up; reducing them to 57/9 before the openers bolstered the green shirts to a resounding nine-wicket victory to start their Women’s Asia Cup 2022 campaign on a high.

Batting first, on the invitation of Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof, the Malaysian batting line-up failed completely and could manage to amass a paltry 57/9 in the allotted 20 overs.

Elsa Hunter fought hard with a gritty knock of 29 not-out off 51 deliveries with the help of three boundaries, while wicketkeeper batter Wan Julia could score 11.

The rest of the batters could not get into the double figures and Malaysia, as a result, restricted to a mere 57/9.

Omaima Sohail led the bowling attack for Pakistan with three wickets, while Tuba Hassan bagged two. On the other hand, Sadia Iqbal and Diana Baig made one scalp each.

Set to chase a paltry 60, Pakistan’s opening pair of Muneeba Ali and Sidra Ameen gave their side a solid start as they amassed 45 runs at a rapid pace.

Mahirah Izzati Ismail then struck in her first over to break the strong partnership as she castled Muneeba on 21. The left-handed batter faced 23 deliveries and smashed three boundaries.

Skipper Bismah then joined Sidra at the crease and took Pakistan to their first triumph of the ongoing Asia Cup as they chased down the target in nine overs with nine wickets to spare.

Sidra top-scored for the side with an unbeaten 31 off 23 deliveries, laced with five boundaries, while Bismah scored a run-a-ball eight not-out.
