Athapaththu’s ton in vain as Amazons win Women’s League exhibition 2-1

RAWALPINDI: Chamari Athapathtu’s brilliant century went in vain as Amazons beat Super Women by 33 runs in the final match on Saturday to win the Women’s League exhibition contest by 2-1.

Set to chase a massive 219, Athathpathu led a superb fightback for Super Women with an unbeaten 107 from 60 balls, however, Fatima Sana ran through the middle order to steer Amazons to victory.

Right-arm pacer Sana took three wickets, dismissing Sune Luus, Tuba Hasan and Syeda Aroob Shah between 17th and 19th overs to unsettle the opponents’ chase and help her team restrict Super Women to 185/8 in the 20 overs.

Apart from Sri Lanka captain’s heroic efforts, Iram Javed made 35 from 29 balls while the rest of the batting lineup failed to put on any significant resistance.

For Amazons, Sana impressed with brilliant bowling figures of 3/34, while Dani Wyatt took two wickets in exchange for 42 runs. Nashra Sandhi and Anum Amin had a wicket each to their credits.

Earlier skipper Bismah Maroof scored her second consecutive fifty to help Amazons set a massive target.

Amazons piled up 200-plus runs for the second day in a row, surpassing their previous 204-run total on Friday.

Electing to bat first, opener Danii Wyatt once again led the charge at the top before captain Bismah smashed an unbeaten 51 from 36 balls to steer Amzons to 218/6 in the 20 overs.

Wyatt put on a stellar show early on, smashing seven fours and two sixes before perishing inside the powerplay, seven short of another astounding fifty.

Opener Eyman Fatima too joined the party this time and hit four boundaries during her colourful stand of 16-ball 19 but left the crease soon after the lifting of fielding restrictions.

Bismah and Tammy Beaumont then anchored the Amazons’ innings in the middle overs and gathered 67 runs before spinner Tuba Hasan dismissed the English batter in the 14th over.

Beaumont had a cautious knock of 26-ball 39, laced with five fours and a six, while her successor Maia Bouchier made a quick 21 from 10 balls before a slower one from Aiman Anwar knocked her down in the 17th over.

While Bismah remained firm from one end, Tess Flintoff (7) and Aliya Riaz (8) were dismissed cheaply in the death overs.

Fatima Sana, however, played a 17-run cameo from just 7 balls, hitting a couple of fours in each of the last two overs.

For Super Women, Aiman Anwer bagged two wickets while Chamari Athapaththu, Nida Dar, Umme Hani and Tuba Hasan took wickets apiece.

Nida Dar receives ICC T20I team of the year cap

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan veteran all-rounder Nida Dar received the commemorative cap of the ICC Women’s T20I Team of the Year.

Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management committee Najam Sethi presented the cap to Dar during the third exhibition match of the Women’s League on Saturday.

She was included in the Women’s T20I team of the year announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in January following her all-round exploits last year.

The 36-year-old was also nominated for the ICC Women’s T20I Player of the Year award. She produced some outstanding performances for Pakistan in last year’s Women’s Asia Cup, where the all-rounder scored 145 runs in six matches at a phenomenal average of 72.50, and also grabbed eight wickets at a meagre 14.87 runs a piece.

She played a crucial role in Pakistan Women’s team’s sensational win against arch-rivals India as she raised an unbeaten 56 and then returned excellent bowling figures of 2/23. Her brilliance with both bat and ball steered Pakistan to the semi-finals, where they eventually lost to Sri Lanka by just a run.

With 15 wickets at an average of 18.33 and an economy rate of 5.50 in T20Is in 2022, veteran off-spinner Dar enjoyed one of the best bowling years in her career.

It may be noted here that the final game of the three exhibition matches is currently underway at Pindi Cricket Stadium where Dar-led Super Women play Bismah Maroof-led Amazons.

Wyatt, Bismah star as Amazons beat Super Women in 2nd exhibition match

RAWALPINDI: Danni Wyatt and Bismah Maroof led a batting onslaught to help Amazons beat Super Women by 41 runs in the second exhibition match of the Women’s League, here on Friday.

Wyatt and Amazons’ skipper raised an astounding 137-run partnership for the second wicket to steer their side to a massive 205-run target after electing to bat first.

In reply, Lauren Winfield-Hill put up a lone fightback from her side with a 42-ball 80 as Super Women managed 163/9 in the 20 overs.

Winfield-Hill hit 11 fours and three maximums during her valiant effort to keep her team afloat and piled up 141/3 before she fell prey to Ghulam Fatima in the 17th over.

Following her dismissal, the side lost control of the chase with Anam Amin, Fatima Sana and Danni Wyatt ripping through the lower order.

Chamari Athapathu and Muneeba Ali scored 17 and 11 respectively at the top while Irum Javed 28 from 27 balls.

Anam Amin, however, led the bowling charge for Amazons as she finished with impressive figures of 4-17, while Sana bagged two wickets for 38 runs. Dani Wyatt and Ghulam Fatima took a scalp each.

Earlier, English batter Wyatt smashed 17 fours and three maximums during her side’s turn and left the crease just three runs short of a magnificent century. She scored 97 from just 45 balls before falling prey to Tuba Hasan in the 14th over.

Electing to bat first, Amazons went through an unwanted start when New Zealander Lea Tahuhu gave Super Women a first-over breakthrough, dismissing Eyman Farima for a paltry 2.

Captain Bismah, who joined Wyatt on the wicket following the early scare, also looked in superb touch as she smacked around a dozen boundaries during her unbeaten 73 off 51 balls.

While Wyatt prevailed for the most part of Amazons’ batting, it was Bismah who carried the charge in the death overs, joined briefly by Tammy Beaumont (13 off 13) and then Tess Flintoff (14* from 7), to steer her side to 204/3.

For Super Women, other than Tuba Hasan (2-34) and Tahuhu (1-28), none of the bowlers made it to the wickets’ column.
