Mohammad Nawaz names THIS India star as his favorite all-rounder

LAUDERHILL: Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has named former India stalwart Yuvraj Singh as his favourite all-rounder.

Pakistan clinched the series 2-1 against West Indies after sealing a 13-run win in the final T20I at Central Broward Regional Park.

Chasing a daunting 190-run target, West Indies fell 13 runs short despite Sherfane Rutherford’s and Alick Athanaze’s half-centuries.

For Pakistan, it was an all-round bowling effort with each of the front-line bowlers scalping one wicket each.

Nawaz, who played a significant role in Pakistan’s triumph, was named as the Player of the Series. The left-hander scalped seven wickets in three matches to earn this award.

“My favourite all-rounder has always been Yuvraj Singh, and of course Shahid bhai (Afridi) — I grew up watching both of them a lot,” Nawaz revealed.

Mohammad Nawaz mentioned his bowling plan amid favorable spin conditions.

“When you get these kinds of conditions, the plans become simpler. The pitch favoured spinners today — it was just about hitting the right areas,” he said.

The 31-year-old reflected on bowling with the ball, revealing that he was very cautious with his bowling.

“I’ve bowled with the new ball before in my career. Caribbean players are naturally strong, so I had to be very cautious with my line and length, Nawaz elaborated.

“These days, if you stick to just one line and length, batters can predict you easily so it’s all about outsmarting them,” he concluded.

Champions Trophy: Yuvraj Singh backs Pakistan to have edge over India

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh believes Pakistan hold the upper hand against India ahead of their much-anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025 showdown in Dubai on February 23.

In a recent interview, Yuvraj pointed out that Pakistan’s extensive experience of playing in Dubai gives them a key advantage over their arch-rivals.

“I actually think Pakistan has an advantage because they have a base in Dubai. They have played a lot of cricket there and understand the conditions well,” he said.

He emphasized that an India-Pakistan clash isn’t just about big names but about handling pressure and adapting to the situation.

“You talk about match-winners—yes, I agree with Shahid Afridi that we have more match-winners. But I believe that even if Pakistan has fewer match-winners, one player can still take the game away,” Yuvraj Singh added.

“The game is not just about match-winners; it’s about playing in the moment and not letting expectations get the better of you. The team that does this better will win.”

It’s worth noting that Pakistan are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 60-run loss to New Zealand in their opening match in Karachi.

Meanwhile, India started their Champions Trophy campaign with a convincing win against Bangladesh as they comfortably chased a 229-run target against Bangladesh, thanks to a brilliant 101-run knock by Shubman Gill.

Historically, Pakistan has a slight edge over India in the Champions Trophy, winning three out of their five meetings.

Their last encounter in the tournament was the 2017 final, where Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side produced a dominant performance, thrashing India by 180 runs to lift their first-ever Champions Trophy title.

Yuvraj Singh’s father levels serious allegations against MS Dhoni

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh levelled serious allegations against former Indian skipper MS Dhoni.

Yograj, who represented India in one Test and six ODIs, has been a regular critique of India’s World Cup-winning captain Dhoni.

Meanwhile, in his latest remarks, Yograj Singh accused MS Dhoni of destroying his son, Yuvraj Singh’s career, stating that the former captain will never be forgiven.

“I won’t forgive MS Dhoni. He should look at his face in the mirror. He is a very big cricketer, but what he has done against my son, everything is coming out now; it can never be forgiven in life, said Yograj while talking to the Zee Switch YouTube channel.

“I have never done two things in life – first, I have never forgiven anybody who has done wrong for me, and second, I have never hugged them in my life, be it my family members or my kids,” he continued.

Earlier this year, Yograj claimed that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost the 17th edition of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) due to Dhoni. He further claimed that the former wicketkeeper batter is jealous of Yuvraj, who was named the ambassador of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

“CSK lost IPL 2024. Why did they lose? It’s whatever you sow, so shall you reap. Yuvraj Singh is the ICC Ambassador, hats off to him! And this jealous Dhoni, where is he? He didn’t even shake hands with Yuvraj, and that is the reason why CSK failed this year,” stated Yograj.

It is worth mentioning here that MS Dhoni called time on his illustrious career in August 2020. He etched his name as one of the most successful Indian captains, leading the nation to three ICC titles in a period of just six years.

On the other hand, Yuvraj Singh retired from international cricket, a year ago in 2019. His last appearance for India came in June that year against West Indies.

WATCH: Samoa’s Darius Visser breaks T20I record with 39 runs in one over

Samoa batter Darius Visser rewrote the history books as he broke the record for scoring the most runs in an over during the ICC T20 World Cup East Asia-Pacific Region Qualifier match against Vanuatu.

While batting first in the Samoan capital Apia, the 28-year-old all-rounder, came out to bat at the fall of the second wicket in the second over.

Playing only his third T20I, he started cautiously, scoring 46 runs from 34 balls before he made history in the 15th over, bowled by Nalin Nipiko.

Darius Visser smashed six sixes, during the record-breaking 39-run over, becoming only the fourth batter to achieve this feat. This is also the first instance of a team scoring more than 36 runs in an over.

Visser struck three sixes off the first three balls from Nipiko over-stepped on the next ball, conceding a no-ball. The right-hander made full use of the free hit as he sent the ball over the legside boundary.

Nipiko bowled a dot ball before overstepping again. The free hit ball was a waist-height no-ball, which was also sent over the fine leg for six.

Visser expertly smacked the final ball over the deep square leg boundary, breaking the record with 39 runs in just one over.

Prior to the Samoan batter, Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, West Indian batter Kieron Pollard and Nepal’s Dipendra Singh Airee achieved the coveted feat of hitting six sixes in an over in T20I cricket.

Meanwhile, there were two instances where a team amassed 36 runs in a single over. West Indian batter Nicholas Pooran helped his side score 36 runs in an over, assisted by extras from Afghanistan bowler Azmatullah Omarzai during the T20 World Cup 2024.

Before Pooran, in a T20I between India and Afghanistan, Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh joined hands to score 36 runs in Karim Janat’s over.

Visser went on to score 132 runs from 62 balls with a whopping 14 sixes and four boundaries before departing in the final over. He became the first batter from Samoa to score a century in T20I cricket.

Samoa bowled out for 174 runs on the last ball of the innings, however, they restricted Vanuatu to 164-9 to win the match by 10 runs.

Nalin Nipiko, who gave away 61 runs in his four-over quota, shone with the bat as he scored 73 runs from 52 balls.

Meanwhile, Darius Visser also contributed with his leg-spin bowling as he castled Ronald Tari, returning with figures of 1-29 in four overs.

T20 World Cup 2024 ambassador Yuvraj Singh predicts finalist teams

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh predicted his finalist teams for the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, being held in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies.

Singh, who was a part of the Indian side that won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007, believes that the two of India, Pakistan or West Indies will make their way to the final. He also expressed his hope of not seeing Australia in the final.

“I’m hoping India, probably West Indies. Pakistan 3, and no Australians (laughs),” stated Yuvraj.

The all-rounder also backed India to win the T20 World Cup 2024 but advised the former champions to back themselves in believe in their abilities.

“I believe we have the self belief of winning big tournaments. I think if India believes and backs themselves and plays to their own strengths, I’m sure they’ll go all the way. And that’s what I believe in,” Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted Yuvraj.

“I think that’s the reason why we won. We focused on where, how we are good and the things that we need to do rather than thinking of where the opposition is going to harm us. We have the match winners,” he added.

“Some of my fondest cricketing memories have come from playing at the T20 World Cup, including hitting six sixes in an over, so it’s very exciting to be part of this edition, which is set to be the biggest one yet,” Yuvraj said.

“The West Indies is a great place to play cricket with the fans coming to watch creating a vibe that is completely unique to that part of the world, while cricket is also expanding in the USA and I’m excited to be part of that growth through the T20 World Cup.

“India’s clash against Pakistan in New York is going to be one of the biggest sporting fixtures in the world this year, so it’s a privilege to be a part of and to witness the best players in the world playing in a new stadium.”
