Sikandar Raza masterclass aids Zimbabwe to thrash West Indies in CWC Qualifier

HARARE: Sikandar Raza put on a brilliant all-round show and propelled Zimbabwe to a stunning 35-run victory over West Indies in the 13th match of the Cricket World Cup (CWC) Qualifier on Saturday.

In a hill-hill Group A clash, hosts Zimbabwe handed a 35-run thrashing to former champions West Indies and solidify their grasp on the top spot in the standings.

Dynamic all-rounder Sikandar Raza was the star of the show as he backed his sensational 68-run knock with two wickets and earned the Player of the Match award for his brilliance.

Put into bat first, Zimbabwe accumulated a par 268-run total before bundling out in the final over.

The home side had a promising start to their innings as openers Joylord Gumbie and Craig Ervine raised 63 runs for the first wicket until the former perished in the 16th over.

Gumbie could score 26 off 50 deliveries with the help of two boundaries and a six.

His dismissal triggered a brief collapse and the hosts, consequently, slipped to 112/4 in the 25th over with Ervine and Sean Williams also walking back.

Ervine remained the notable run-getter for Zimbabwe with a 58-ball 47 which featured seven boundaries while Williams could score 23 off 26.

Following the slump, Sikandar Raza once again stood up for his team in CWC Qualifier and stitched a crucial 87-run partnership with Ryan Burl and both scored half-centuries.

The duo counter-attacked the West Indian bowlers and scored at a rapid pace until Akeal Hosein trapped Burl in his legs soon after the latter raised his bat for a well-crafted half-century.

Ryan Burl scored 50 off 57 deliveries, laced with five boundaries and a six.

Sikandar Raza then put on a brief partnership with Clive Madane (5) before finally perishing in the 46th over and Zimbabwe, as a result, had their batting tail exposed.

Raza top-scored for Zimbabwe with a brisk 58-ball 68 which included six boundaries and two sixes.

The West Indian bowlers then soon wrapped up Zimbabwe’s innings by bundling them out on the penultimate delivery of the innings with 268 runs on the scoreboard.

Keemo Paul led the bowling charge for West Indies with three wickets but was expensive, followed by Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hosein who took two each.

Set to chase 269, West Indies could only raise 233 before being bowled in the 45th over despite Kyle Mayers’s half-century.

West Indies too, had a decent start to their innings as their openers raised a quick 43-run opening partnership which lasted with Brandon King’s (20 off 12) departure in the seventh over.

Following his dismissal, the Caribbean side dealt with another blow as Johnson Charles fell three overs later, scoring one off five.

With their side two down for 46 in the 10th over, Kyle Mayers received was joined by skipper Shai Hope at the crease.

The pair briefly stopped the flow of wickets and took West Indies past the 100-run mark but Wellington Masakadza drew a massive breakthrough in the 21st over as he got rid of Mayers.

Mayers remained the top-scorer for West Indies in the run chase with 56 from 72 balls with the help of eight boundaries and a six.

West Indies then began to lose wickets at regular intervals and despite some notable contributions in the middle by skipper Shai Hope (34) and Nicholas Pooran (30), they slipped to 180/6 in the 33rd over.

Roston Chase, the only batter who hung in there for the West Indies, fell in the 43rd over after a gutsy 44-run knock and Zimbabwe moved just one wicket away from claiming a morale-boosting victory over the West Indies.

Tendai Chatara soon picked up the last wicket in his next over by dismissing Alzarri Joseph and drove Zimbabwe to their third consecutive victory in the CWC Qualifier.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul hits unbeaten double ton for West Indies

BULAWAYO: Tagenarine Chanderpaul made an unbeaten double century after setting a new West Indies record of 336 for the first wicket with Kraigg Brathwaite on Monday before the tourists declared at 447-6 in the first Test against Zimbabwe.

The stand surpassed the 298-run partnership shared by Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes against England in 1990.

Brathwaite made 182 before being trapped leg before while Chanderpaul, the son of former West Indies skipper Shivnarine, finished on 207 not out after hitting a six to reach a double ton in only his third Test outing.

It is the ninth highest opening Test partnership, a long way short of the overall record of 415 added by South Africa’s Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2008.

Both batsmen began day three at the Queens Sports Club with hundreds under their belts as West Indies resumed on 221 without loss after two rain-affected days.

The scoring rate had been under two and half until that point but Brathwaite, 116 not out overnight, immediately set about the attack with the run rate early on standing at five per over.

Brathwaite clattered his way to 182 and looked odds-on to score the second double century of his Test career when he was trapped by spinner Wellington Masakadza.

For once the captain misread the length and tried to sweep a full-length delivery on off stump, ending an innings which spanned 312 balls and included 18 fours.

It was a welcome return to form for Brathwaite, who made only 19 and three against Australia in his last Test, two months ago in Adelaide.

It was small reward for the Zimbabwe bowlers who had toiled 114 overs before making the breakthrough.

They were rewarded with a second wicket before lunch when Kyle Mayers was bowled through the gate for 20 by leg-spinner Brandon Mavuta, who went on to take five wickets at a cost of 140 runs.

But the wicket that eluded him and four other Zimbabwean bowlers was that of Chanderpaul who, picking up the tempo from a sluggish first two days, struck three sixes and 16 fours before West Indies declared soon after lunch.

Joseph, Holder propel West Indies to a much-needed victory in T20 WC

HOBART: Two-time champions West Indies tasted their first triumph as the Joseph-led bowling attack bundled out Zimbabwe on a paltry 122 and scripted a confidence-boosting 31-run victory in the eighth match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Following an upset defeat against Scotland in their campaign opener, the former champions bounced back to thrash Zimbabwe by 31 runs to seal their first victory in this year’s mega event.

Set to chase 154, Zimbabwe could manage to accumulate 122 before bundling out in the 19th over.

Lower-order batter Luke Jongwe displayed fightback as he top-scored for the side with a gritty knock of 29 off 22 deliveries. He smashed three boundaries and a six before falling to Joseph in the 18th over.

Wessly Madhevere scored the second-most runs for Zimbabwe in the run chase; scoring 27 up the order, while the rest of their batters seemed clueless against the West Indian bowling attack.

Right-arm pacer Joseph returned astounding figures of 4/16, while Holder 3/12 as they dented Zimbabwe’s hopes of chasing down the total.

Akeal Hosein, Obed McCoy and Odean Smit, on the other hand, struck out a batter apiece.

West Indies were sailing comfortably at one point as they hoisted 77/1 in 9.4 runs before Even Lewis fell prey to Raza in the 10th over to set the alarm bells off for the batting side.

Raza jolted the West Indian batting line further when he struck twice in the 14th over, dismissing Shamarh Brooks(0) and Alzarri Joseph(4) cheaply.

Following the slump, Rovman Powell and No 8 batter AKeal Hussain anchored the Windies’ innings as they scored 28 off 21 and 23 off 18, respectively, and raised a defiant partnership of 49 runs before the former offered his wicket to Blessing Muzarabani in the final over.

Johnson Charles, however, remained the top-scorer for the side as he played a cautious knock of 45 off 36 laced with three fours and two sixes.

For Zimbabwe, apart from Raza’s sensational figures of 3/19 in his four overs, Muzarabani took two scalps while Sean Williams etched a wicket to his credit.
