Pakistan’s rising squash sensation, Noor Zaman, etched his name in history on Thursday as he lifted the inaugural WSF U23 World Squash Championship title with a stunning victory over Egypt’s Kareem El Torkey.

The young star showed nerves of steel in front of a buzzing home crowd at Karachi’s DHA Creek Club, rallying back from two games down to seal a thrilling 3-2 victory in the final.

It was far from a smooth start for Noor, who found himself on the back foot early in the contest. But as pressure mounted, he dug deep.

“After going two games down, I just told myself to stay focused and fight till the very end,” Noor said after the final.

The second seed had earlier booked his spot in the final with a commanding performance against Malaysia’s Ameeshenraj Chandaran in the semifinals.

Noor Zaman was already leading when his opponent retired mid-match, sending the Pakistani through to the summit clash.

“The crowd support has been incredible. I gave it my all to win this title for Pakistan,” Noor had said after that match.

His win sparked celebrations across the country and drew praise from the highest offices in the land. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the nation on Noor’s success, calling it a proud moment for Pakistan.

“Noor Zaman has brought global recognition to Pakistan. The entire nation is proud of him,” said the PM, adding that he hopes Pakistan will regain its lost glory in squash.

President Asif Ali Zardari also lauded Noor’s “outstanding performance” and expressed confidence in the youngster’s future.
