New Zealand fast bowler ruled out of T20 World Cup 2026

New Zealand have been dealt a significant blow ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with fast bowler Adam Milne ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a hamstring injury during the ongoing SA20 in South Africa.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed on Friday that Kyle Jamieson, who was initially named as a travelling reserve, has been added to the main squad as Milne’s replacement.

Milne suffered the injury while bowling his opening over for Sunrisers Eastern Cape against MI Cape Town last Sunday.

Subsequent scans revealed the extent of the hamstring tear, forcing the 32-year-old pacer to withdraw from the global event.

Prior to the setback, Milne had enjoyed a productive SA20 campaign, claiming 11 wickets at an average of 16.27 and an economy rate of 7.61.

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed his disappointment at losing the experienced fast bowler at a crucial stage.

“We’re all gutted for Adam,” Walter said. “He’d worked incredibly hard to get himself ready for the tournament and was looking back to his best in his eight games for the Eastern Cape Sunrisers.”

“It’s really unfortunate timing, and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Jamieson, who is currently part of New Zealand’s squad touring India, has been elevated from reserve status.

Squad changes can be made freely until January 31, after which any replacements will require approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“It’s great that Kyle is already with us here in India,” Walter added.

“He’s an integral part of our pace-bowling group and has hit the ground running on this tour. He brings valuable experience and skill, which will serve us well at the World Cup.”

The tall right-armer made his return to international cricket late last year following a long layoff due to a back injury and recently impressed with a career-best 4 for 41 in the first ODI against India earlier this month.

Depleted New Zealand sustain major blow ahead of Pakistan T20Is

New Zealand’s inexperienced squad for the five-match away T20I series against Pakistan got weakened as hard-hitting opener Finn Allen and speedster Adam Milne have been ruled out of the series.

According to New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Allen and Milne suffered injuries in the team’s training session that concluded just hours before their departure for Pakistan.

Adam Milne felt discomfort in his ankle while Finn Allen sustained an injury to his back and were subsequently left out of New Zealand’s already depleted squad.

“We feel for both Finn and Adam, suffering injuries so close to the start of the tour. They have been strong performers for us in the T20 format since the last World Cup,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.

“Our support staff and medical networks will be working closely with both players over the next few weeks to complete plans for their treatment and subsequent return to cricket.”

As a result, wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Blundell and all-rounder Zak Foulkes replaced Allen and Milne respectively.

Blundell has previously visited Pakistan while uncapped Foulkes will likely be making his debut for New Zealand.

“Zak has had an impressive season for Canterbury including being their leading wicket-taker in all three competitions,” Stead said.

“He has displayed impressive skills with the ball, particularly in T20 cricket for the Kings. We also know he has skills with the bat and it will be an excellent opportunity for him to be part of the group.”

New Zealand squad:

Michael Bracewell (c), Tom Blundell, Mark Chapman, Josh Clarkson, Jacob Duffy, Dean Foxcroft, Ben Lister, Cole McConchie, Zak Foulkes, Jimmy Neesham, Will O’Rourke, Tim Robinson, Ben Sears, Tim Seifert (WK), Ish Sodhi.

Pakistan Squad:

Babar Azam (c), Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Saim Ayub, Usman Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Azam Khan (wk), Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir, Abbas Afridi, Abrar Ahmed, Fakhar Zaman, Irfan Khan Niazi, Usama Mir, Zaman Khan

Reserves: Haseebullah, Mohammad Ali, Agha Salman, Sahibzada Farhan, Mohammad Wasim Jr.

New Zealand are slated to reach Pakistan on April 14, two days after Pakistan’s squad announcement, for the crucial series, leading to the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup.

Rawalpindi’s Pindi Cricket Stadium will host the first three T20Is between Pakistan and New Zealand on 18, 20 and 21 April.

The two sides will then travel to Lahore to lock horns in the remaining two T20Is on 25 and 27 April, respectively.

New Zealand thrash Sri Lanka in second T20I to level series

DUNEDIN: New Zealand breezed past Sri Lanka with a commanding nine-wicket win in the second Twenty20 international to level the series on Wednesday after opener Tim Seifert top-scored with 79 not out.

Kiwi bowler Adam Milne took a five-wicket haul for just 26 runs in a man-of-the-match performance as Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 141 runs after they were put into bat.

“You always dream of taking five wickets for New Zealand. As I had three in the last over with a couple of tailenders in, I started feeling a little bit greedy,” Milne said in a post-match talk.

Seifert then helped New Zealand chase the target in just 14.4 overs for the loss of opener Chad Bowes.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham expressed satisfaction over his side’s ‘clinical performance”.

“The way we were just able to keep taking wickets, that’s the best way really to stall a run rate,” he said

“I thought our bowling performance was outstanding.”

With the victory in today’s game, New Zealand levelled the series 1-1 after Sri Lanka won the opening T20 in Auckland on Sunday. The final T20I and series decider will be played in Queensland on Saturday.

Milne’s impressive bowling display sailed New Zealand to a comfortable position as they were set to chase a paltry 142.

Opener Bowes was caught after hitting 31 off 15 balls before Seifert breathed fire in a partnership of 106 alongside Latham, who finished 20 not out.

Seifert then wrapped up the game in style with a couple of massive hits

Earlier. Kusal Perera (35) and Dhananjaya de Silva (37) held the fort for the visitors with a middle-order partnership of 62 off 46 and took the scoreboard to 99-4 after 12 overs.

The tourists then underwent a dismal batting collapse by losing their next six wickets for just 42 runs as New Zealand’s seamers found their length to devastating effect.

Charith Asalanka was the last Sri Lankan batter to offer any resistance, contributing 24 runs off 19 balls.

Milne led the charge for New Zealand, picking off Sri Lanka’s tailenders Dilshan Madushanka and Pramod Madushan without a run being scored.

“We got a good start but lost the momentum in the middle,” said Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, who paid credit to Milne’s superb bowling.

“Losing wickets at regular intervals cost us the game.”

It may be noted here that Sri Lanka have lost both the Test and one-day international series 2-0 during their ongoing tour of New Zealand.

Milne withdraws from New Zealand’s ODI side for Pakistan, India series

CHRISTCHURCH: Fast bowler Adam Milne has decided to withdraw from the New Zealand squads for the upcoming ODI series in Pakistan and India due to concerns about his preparation.

Milne, 30, sustained a hamstring discomfort during the home series against India in November 2022. He will be replaced by fellow speedster Blair Tickner who is presently part of the New Zealand Test squad in the ongoing two-game series against hosts Pakistan.

Milne informed Blackcaps selector Gavin Larsen about his decision and the two reached a mutual understanding on the issue.

“Adam was very up front with us about his concerns around the lack of one-day bowling loading for the upcoming tours,” said  Larsen said.

“After chatting to him, we agreed his preparation leading into the tour wouldn’t be sufficient for him to cope with the demands of back-to-back, three-game ODI series. We appreciate his honesty and his genuine desire not to let the team down.”

He added that Blair’s skills at bowling through the middle and his ability to hit the pitch hard made him a similar prospect to what Adam offered.

“The fact he’s already in Pakistan experiencing the conditions is an added bonus.” he expressed.

Earlier, New Zealand Cricket announced two separate squads for the away ODI series against Pakistan and India. Milne was part of both squads.

Kane Williamson will lead the Blackcaps in Pakistan only, while his deputy Tom Latham will take the reigns for India ODIs.

Blackcaps will play three ODIs against Pakistan commencing on January 9.
