The process aims to ensure long-term stability and commercial strength as the league enters a new phase.

Successful bidders will also be granted the right to select a home city from a PCB-approved list, which includes Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad and Gilgit.

PCB chairman announces prize money for PSL 11

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, unveiled the prize money for the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11 on Friday, which will feature an expanded eight-team lineup.

In a post on his official X account, Naqvi confirmed that the PSL 11 champions will receive $500,000, while the runners-up will earn $300,000.

He also introduced a new category recognising off-field impact, announcing $200,000 for the “Best Franchise Contributing Towards Cricket Development.”

“Complementing the Pakistan Super League’s growth, I am thrilled to announce a new reward for franchises in the forthcoming editions,” Naqvi wrote on his official X account.

This major financial announcement arrives on the same day the PCB confirmed the auction date for the league’s two new franchise teams.

The auction, set to shape PSL 11, will take place on 6 January 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the tournament’s expansion.

The shortlisted cities in contention for franchise allocation include Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad, and Gilgit.

Only technically qualified bidders will be invited to the auction, and successful bidders will be granted the right to choose their preferred city or team name from the shortlisted pool.

Highlighting the league’s growing stature globally, the PCB noted:

“The HBL PSL, now recognised as one of the premier T20 leagues, continues to grow in commercial strength, fan following and overall impact. We look forward to welcoming new stakeholders to the PSL ecosystem.”

Thursday’s announcement also comes on the heels of recent confusion triggered by social media reports claiming that the two new team names had already been finalised.

Rumours had suggested that Faisalabad and Gilgit were the frontrunners.

However, the PCB dismissed those claims, clarifying once again that franchise names will only be determined after the auction and strictly in accordance with the procedure outlined in the official bid documents.

PCB draws up backup plan amid rift with Multan Sultans ownership: reports

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly created a backup plan for the potential termination of the Multan Sultans franchise due to ongoing tensions with the franchise owner, Ali Tareen.

According to sources, the PCB has initiated contact with one to two potential investors who have expressed interest in acquiring the Multan Sultans franchise, should the current ownership situation deteriorate further.

“If matters are not settled with the existing management, the franchise could be sold to a new owner,” insiders revealed.

The board, however, is reported to be moving forward with great deliberation.

Officials have stressed that no action will be taken near the league’s valuation process, as the PCB wants to avoid any disruption that could affect the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) credibility.

Relations between the PCB and the Multan Sultans management have reportedly soured over several issues in recent months.

The latest flashpoint came when the board issued a legal notice to Ali Tareen for allegedly violating the PSL code of conduct and franchise agreement.

The notice warned of potential termination of the franchise and blacklisting of Tareen from future league involvement.

In response, Tareen released a sarcastic “apology” video on his social media platforms, mocking the PCB’s handling of the situation while publicly tearing up the legal notice.

“I didn’t receive a single call, message, or invitation to resolve this matter,” Tareen said in the video. “Instead, I was served a legal notice. If you were more competent, you’d know these matters aren’t handled this way.”

Although Tareen’s video was framed as an apology, it was filled with biting irony. The video concluded dramatically with Tareen tearing the legal notice in half, stating, “So, I hope you like my apology video.”

PSL set to expand with two new teams from next edition

The 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), set to be played in 2026, may feature eight teams, according to tournament CEO Salman Naseer.

The first edition of the league was staged in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2016 due to security concerns, but it is staged in Pakistan, where it vows to strengthen its commercial appeal and competitiveness.

In the inaugural edition, PSL featured five teams – Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators – before being expanded to six sides with the inclusion of Multan Sultans in 2018.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also stated that PSL 10 will be the last featuring six teams. Two more teams would be added in 2026.

The CEO of PSL announced that the league will expand by adding two more teams by the end of this year.

“By the end of this year, we might get two more teams,” Naseer told local media on Thursday.

“We started at a time when no cricket was happening in Pakistan. The challenge was to bring it back.”

“Now that we’ve successfully brought cricket back to traditional centres, the next step is expanding beyond these four cities (Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Multan),” he said.

Salman Naseer also mentioned that adding two more teams would be an interesting challenge, highlighting the potential for a larger tournament window.

“This year will be an interesting test, and with more teams, we anticipate a bigger window,” Naseer added.

“Some of our rights are up for valuation after this PSL. A lot will depend on the data we gather,” he concluded.

Notably, the January-February window of the Pakistan Super League now faces strong competition from South Africa’s (SA T20) and the UAE’s International League T20 (ILT20).

Additionally, its value will be influenced by post-season data as broadcasting rights are auctioned.
