Joe Root surpasses Asad Shafiq’s Test record against Australia

Joe Root surpasses Asad Shafiq’s Test record against Australia

BRISBANE: England ace batter Joe Root surpassed former Pakistan batter Asad Shafiq’s record of the highest individual score against Australia in a pink-ball Test.

Shafiq, who retired in 2023, hit 137 during Pakistan’s tour of Australia in 2016 in a day/night Test.

Notably, Faf du Plessis, who is set to feature in the forthcoming PSL 11, also scored 118* in Adelaide back in 2016.

However, earlier today, Root shattered the long-standing record with an unbeaten 138 during day two of the second Ashes Test, playing a major role in bringing England’s total to 334.

Highest individual score vs Australia in Day/Night Tests

  • 138* – Joe Root, Gabba 2025
  • 137 – Asad Shafiq, Gabba 2016
  • 118* – Faf du Plessis, Adelaide 2016
  • 113 – Yasir Shah, Adelaide 2019
  • 104 – Stephen Cook, Adelaide 2016

For the unversed, Joe Root ended his long wait for a Test century on Australian soil with a fighting hundred on day one of the second Ashes Test at The Gabba on Thursday.

Coming into the contest under heavy scrutiny after twin failures in Perth, where England were bundled out inside two days, the former captain delivered a statement knock under pressure.

He walked in with his side in early trouble at 5-2 after a hostile opening burst from Mitchell Starc and immediately shifted the momentum with a composed, authoritative display.

Root rebuilt the innings with a crucial 117-run stand alongside opener Zak Crawley, who contributed 76, before continuing the fight almost single-handedly as wickets fell regularly at the other end.

The milestone moment arrived when Joe Root drove Scott Boland to the rope to bring up his 40th Test century, his first in Australia.

With that effort, the right-hander became only the fourth batter in history to reach the 40-century mark, joining an elite club featuring Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Sachin Tendulkar.

He has now scored Test centuries in eight of the ten countries he has played in.

Pakistan selector explains reason behind Haseebullah Khan’s exclusion from T20I squad

Pakistan selector explains reason behind Haseebullah Khan’s exclusion from T20I squad

KARACHI: Pakistan cricket team selector Asad Shafiq has addressed the omission of young wicketkeeper-batter Haseebullah Khan from the national squad for the ongoing tour of New Zealand.

Speaking to the media at a private university in Karachi on Thursday, Shafiq explained that Haseebullah was given an opportunity in Australia, however, he suffered an injury later which ruled him out from further action.

He assured that once the left-handed batter regains full rhythm, he will be reconsidered for selection.

“Haseebullah was given a chance in Australia, but he was sidelined due to injury. Once he finds his rhythm again, he will get another opportunity,” Shafiq stated.

For the unversed, Haseebullah, who has represented Pakistan in one ODI and three T20Is, suffered a hand injury during practice ahead of Pakistan’s home Test series against West Indies earlier this year. A ball struck his hand, causing a wound that required stitches.

Having regained fitness, he is currently playing for Quetta Region in the National T20 Cup, where he has scored 57 runs in three games at a strike rate of 86.36.

Asad Shafiq, while addressing the broader selection process, reiterated that Pakistan’s new players have been picked purely based on domestic performances.

He emphasized that the selection committee’s primary objective is to reward top-performing domestic players with opportunities at the national level.

“Our job is to give domestic performers a chance. Whoever performs will get an opportunity,” he asserted.

With the T20 World Cup approaching, Shafiq explained that the squad is being built with a long-term vision. Given the high-risk nature of T20 cricket, he stressed the importance of testing players in different conditions.

“T20 cricket involves more risks, which is why it’s important to give players proper opportunities. Every player selected in the squad will get a fair chance,” he assured.

Asad Shafiq also addressed concerns regarding the frequent chopping and changing in the team, stating that players will not be dropped after just one failed series.

“We also want every player to get a proper chance. No one will be sidelined based on just one bad series,” he affirmed.

Apart from Haseebullah Khan, Shafiq also discussed young pacer Mushtaq Kalhoro, confirming that he is in the selection committee’s long-term plans, along with several other promising domestic talents.

“All players are in our plans. Whoever performs in domestic cricket will get an opportunity,” he concluded.

Abdul Razzaq, Asad Shafiq included in women’s selection committee

LAHORE: The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi has reconstituted the national women’s selection committee, expanding it to seven members including former cricketers Abdul Razzaq and Asad Shafiq.

This decision follows the disappointing performance of the Pakistan women’s team against the West Indies Women, resulting in a 3-0 loss in the three-match ODI series.

The retained members from the previous panel include Asmavia Iqbal and Marina Iqbal, joined by Abdul Razzaq and Asad Shafiq (both members of the men’s national selection committee) and former international player, Batool Fatima.

In line with the men’s national selection committee make-up, the coach and captain will also be part of the national women’s selection committee.

The immediate task of the new selection committee will be to choose the Pakistan women’s team for the upcoming tour of England, where they are scheduled to play three T20Is and three ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 fixtures from 11 to 29 May.

Despite the recent 3-0 loss to the West Indies, Pakistan currently holds the fifth position in the 10-team ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25.

The top five teams from this championship, along with hosts India, will directly qualify for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. The remaining teams will participate in a Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament.

PCB announces seven-member selection committee without a chairman

PCB announces seven-member selection committee without a chairman

LAHORE: Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on Sunday announced a seven-member National Cricket Selection Committee.

During a press conference, Naqvi announced the reorganised selection committee, with each member having equal powers and no chairman of the committee.

“We have reorganised this selection committee, the committee will consist of seven members, but what is different this time is there will be no chairman selection committee, each member would have the same power as the other one,” Naqvi said.

The former chairman Wahab Riaz is joined by former cricketers Abdul Razzaq, Wahab Riaz and Asad Shafiq in the selection committee. Meanwhile, the captain, head coach and an analyst will also be part of the committee.

“The decision would be [decided] on the majority, they should debate, and talk amongst themselves so a better conclusion can be reached.

“The previous structure of the committee was different, but this one, I assure you every member was chosen after considering multiple factors.

“The selection committee will make all the decisions going forward. I have conveyed that the chairman will not be involved in any decisions regarding the selection.

“I back this selection committee and believe that they will produce desirable results”

He also announced that the committee would also be responsible for the appointment of the captain.

“The matter of captaincy is being deliberated upon. I believe that the captain is the selection committee’s prerogative,” said Mohsin Naqvi.

“They are working on it and I am sure they will finalise their decision after the camp is completed.”

“I am not a cricket expert, the people sitting next to me are experts. Decisions regarding cricket will be made by cricket experts.”

Notably, PCB dissolved the National Cricket Selection Committee earlier today.

The development came after sources revealed on March 18 that the PCB will further empower the committee with full authority.

The first assignment of the new selection committee is to select the squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, commencing on 18 April.

Asad Shafiq announces retirement from all forms of cricket

Asad Shafiq announces retirement from all forms of cricket

KARACHI: Right-handed middle-order batter Asad Shafiq announced his retirement from all forms of cricket yesterday after he led Karachi Whites to their maiden National T20 Cup title.

The Karachi Whites skipper was given a guard of honour by his teammates after defeating Abbottabad in the final of the National T20 Cup.

Asad Shafiq announced his decision during the press conference after the National T20 Cup final citing the ‘lack of passion’ as a major factor.

“I am not feeling the same excitement and passion playing cricket and neither do I have the same fitness levels required for international cricket. Which is why I have decided to say goodbye to all cricket,” said Asad Shafiq.

However, he confirmed that he will feature in three games for SNGPL in the upcoming Patrons Trophy.

Upon being asked about joining Wahab Riaz’s selection committee as a consultant, he affirmed that the board had contacted him.

“I have got the contract from the board and I am looking at it and hopefully it will be processed soon,’ he added.

Shafiq also shed light on the fact that he made the decision to hang up his boots before the ongoing domestic season.

“After being dropped in 2020 I kept on playing domestic cricket for three years in the hope of getting another crack at the Pakistan team,” said the right-hander.

“But before the start of this season, I had decided this would be my last season because I felt that closing in on 38 years of age this was time to retire instead of people telling me to step down.”

Asad Shafiq has represented Pakistan in 77 Test matches from 2010 to 2020 and amassed 4660 runs at an average of 38.19, scoring 12 centuries and 27 half-centuries.

He also played 60 ODIs and 10 T20Is for Pakistan, scoring over 1500 runs.

Meanwhile, he scored over 12,000 runs in 191 First-Class matches, 5,784 runs in 162 List A matches and 2702 runs in 128 T20 games.

QeAT: Asad Shafiq, Sarfaraz Ahmed tons keep Karachi Whites in command

QeAT: Asad Shafiq, Sarfaraz Ahmed tons keep Karachi Whites in command

Unbeaten centuries from Asad Shafiq and Sarfaraz Ahmed placed Karachi Whites comfortably after the first innings on day three of round two of the ongoing QeAT 2023-2024.

Karachi Whites as well as Lahore Whites both declare innings after posting scores over 400, in their games respectively.

In the fifth match of the QeAT 2023-2024, only 10.3 overs were bowled on the second day after which play was called off owing to rain and the wet conditions of the ground. The side was 407-3, at the time of stumps.

Saad Nasim declared the innings on the third day, without adding more runs to their overnight score as the play was not possible in the first session of day three due to a wet outfield.

Rawalpindi had a steady start to their innings. A partnership of 107 runs between the openers placed them comfortably.

Even after Hasan Raza got out, Abdul Faseeh and Ashfaq Ahmed remained steady on the crease, getting a century and a half-century respectively.

Rawalpindi ended the day at 232-1.

Meanwhile, in the seventh game of the ongoing QeAt between Karachi Whites and Faisalabad, veteran Asad Shafiq was joined on the crease by Sarfaraz Ahmed at the end of day two.

Thereafter, Karachi started day three with their two most experienced batters on the crease, as the scorecard read 203-5.

Asad and Sarfaraz, who scored 108* and 128* respectively, took their side from 203 to 434. The brilliant 234-run stand between the two most experienced batters of the side ensured that the side was considerably ahead of their opponents.

Faisalabad bowlers had no luck on day three, as they could not get either of the two set batters out.

Trailing by a mammoth 434, Faisalabad batters had a task ahead of them. Falling victim to the pressure of the scorecard, Faisalabad batters could not stick to the crease.

They ended their day deep in trouble, at 63-6.

Peshawar on the other hand ended the first day of the sixth game of the ongoing QeAT season at 43-2 after batting 17 overs. The second day of play was called off due to rain and ground conditions.

Thus, Peshawar started the third day at 43-2. Sahibzada Farhan-led side struggled to sustain a long partnership for most of the day. Eventually, 73 runs produced between Kamran Ghulam and Abbas Ali helped bring some relief. However, Mohammad Imran broke the partnership by removing Abbas.

Kamran’s knock reeked of reliability as his 117 runs helped Peshawar get to 263, before they were bowled out. Medium pacer Sirajuddin got a four-wicket haul to his name while Majid Ali bagged three wickets.

Multan will begin their batting tomorrow.

In the eighth game of QeAT, Lahore Blues began their day at 83-3, with Qasim Akram and Hussain Talat at the crease. While Hussain was removed shortly after, Qasim’s half-century helped his side’s cause.

A half-century by Waqas Ahmed and a 49 by Junaid Ali further helped Imran Butt’s men to post 314 on the board, getting a lead of 174 runs.

FATA, already behind in the game, lost four early wickets and found themselves in a deep hole. Khushdil Shah and Salman Khan Jnr began the rebuilding job; by the end of the day, two had produced an unbeaten partnership of 79 runs.

FATA ended the day at 127-4.

‘Asad Shafiq did not perform satisfactorily in first class’ Mohammad Yousuf

‘Asad Shafiq did not perform satisfactorily in first class’ Mohammad Yousuf

LAHORE: The batting coach of the Pakistan Cricket Team Mohammad Yousuf claimed that the right-handed batter Asad Shafiq could not perform up to the mark in first-class cricket.

Yousuf, while talking to the media on the sidelines of the ongoing conditioning camp of the players called by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), claimed that the middle-order batter Asad’s performance was not satisfactory in first-class cricket.

“I admit that I used to advocate for Asad Shafiq, but solely on the basis of his performance. Asad, however, could not perform satisfactorily in the recent season of first-class cricket,” he said.

“I think a player needs to perform well in order to make a comeback,” he added.

The batting coach then commented on the team’s home ODI series against West Indies, which will take place next month in the midst of a heatwave, claiming the weather does not make any difference if the players’ fitness levels are good.

“We are working to improve the fitness of the players and I think if the players are fit then the hot weather will not be an issue for them,” he said.

“Being professionals, players have to play in both hot and cold weather. There is no doubt that the weather is too hot and it is going to be challenging but again they are professionals so it will not be an issue,” he maintained.

The former captain then lauded the left-handed opener Shan Masood, who is currently the leading run-scorer of the ongoing County Championship 2022, saying “The way Shan Masood is playing in the County, no other player has played like that till date”.

Yousuf also opined on the right-handed top-order batter Abid Ali, saying “I think Abid will soon return to the team the way he is training.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Abid was diagnosed with heart disease – Acute Coronary Syndrome, after complaining about the sharp chest pain during a Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (QEAT) fixture in 2021 against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).

The players are directed to report to the camp tomorrow (3 June) and the training sessions will start on Friday (June 4).
Meanwhile, experienced cricketer Asad Shafiq and Tabish Khan have missed out on the camp. Asad last played a Test in 2020 and was dropped due to poor performance. Tabish’s exclusion is yet another surprise as the right-arm fast bowler got a chance to make his Test debut at the age of 36 against Zimbabwe in April this year. The lad played only a Test and took a wicket.
The 26 players’ list includes Abdullah Shafique (Central Punjab), Ather Mehmood (Northern), Faisal Akram (Southern Punjab), Haris Sohail (Balochistan), Imran Butt (Balochistan), Irfanullah Shah (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Israrullah (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Kamran Ghulam (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Mir Hamza (Sindh), Mohammad Abbas (Southern Punjab), Mohammad Taha (Sindh), Mubasir Khan (Northern), Mukhtar Ahmed (Southern Punjab), Munir Riaz (Northern), Nauman Ali (Northern), Omair Bin Yousaf (Sindh), Sahibzada Farhan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Sajid Khan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Salman Irshad (Northern), Saud Shakeel (Sindh), Taj Wali (Balochistan), Umer Khan (Southern Punjab), Usman Salahuddin (Central Punjab), Waqar Hussain (Southern Punjab), Yasir Shah (Balochistan) and Zia-ul-Haq (Southern Punjab).
These players will be divided into two batches, one for red-ball cricket and other for white-ball format. All the players will train under the supervision of NHPC’s coaches Saqlain Mushtaq, Mohammad Yousuf, and Umar Rashid. Misbah-ul-Haq (head coach, men’s team), Abdul Majeed (fielding coach, men’s team), Ijaz Ahmed (head coach, Shaheens), Rao Iftikhar Anjum (bowling coach, Shaheens) and Mohtisham Rasheed (fielding coach, Shaheens) will also join the camp.
