BCB sacks Najmul Islam following cricketers’ boycott

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Thursday announced the immediate removal of M. Najmul Islam from his role as Chairman of the Finance Committee, following a nationwide boycott by the country’s cricketers.

The boycott forced the postponement of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) fixtures on Thursday.

The decision was taken by BCB President Md Aminul Islam under Article 31 of the BCB Constitution, with the board stating that the move was necessary to ensure the smooth and effective functioning of its operations.

Until further notice, the BCB president will himself serve as the Acting Chairman of the Finance Committee.

In an official statement, the BCB reiterated that players’ interests remain its top priority and stressed its commitment to safeguarding the dignity and honour of all cricketers under its jurisdiction.

The board also urged players to maintain professionalism and continue their participation in the BPL, underlining the importance of the tournament for Bangladesh cricket.

The development comes after a dramatic day on Thursday, when no teams arrived at the venue ahead of the scheduled BPL match between Chattogram Royals and Noakhali Express.

The protest, led by the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), resulted in both BPL fixtures for the day being postponed.

The standoff stemmed from controversial remarks made by Najmul Islam earlier this week.

Speaking on the sidelines of a board prayer meeting for the late former prime minister Khaleda Zia, Najmul addressed questions about the financial impact if Bangladesh were to miss matches at the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

He suggested the board would not suffer financially and added that players would receive no compensation if they missed out—comments that were widely condemned by cricketers.

Najmul had already been under fire after accusing former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal of being an “Indian agent” in a Facebook post.

The remarks were made in response to Tamim’s recent interview, in which he urged the BCB to prioritise cricketing considerations amid uncertainty over Bangladesh’s participation in the T20 World Cup.

That uncertainty arose after the BCB decided against travelling to India for the tournament, citing security concerns, following a request from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the release of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL squad.

Returning Bangladesh coach says senior cricketers safe

DHAKA: Returning Bangladesh cricket coach Chandika Hathurusingha said Wednesday he did not intend to shake up the team, despite his tempestuous relationship with top players during his first stint at the helm.

The former Sri Lanka batsman, 54, was widely hailed as the architect of some of the national side’s finest moments, including ODI series wins against Pakistan, India and South Africa.

However, he was often reported to be at loggerheads with Bangladesh’s senior cricketers, including current captains Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, while coaching from 2014-17.

Hathurusingha said he was “more experienced now” than during his earlier tenure and said the team’s veterans had been performing well.

“I don’t think their roles will change much,” said Hathurusingha, who arrived back in the country on Sunday.

“Many players have been playing well for Bangladesh. Young players have also come up and played well. So being with that team is always great. It motivates me,” he told reporters in Dhaka.

Hathurusingha coached the Sri Lanka national team and New South Wales after quitting Bangladesh in November 2017 following a disappointing South Africa series.

He replaces Russell Domingo, who stepped down in December with a year left on his contract after a disappointing Test series defeat at home to India.

Hathurusingha’s appointment this month contracts him for two years and begins with a tour by England, who arrive Friday for three ODIs and three T20 matches next month.

Bangladesh has performed best in 50-over matches in recent years but Hathurusingha said the team needed to lift its game elsewhere.

“Test cricket is very competitive. T20 is more popular now. So we have to find our own game plan,” he said.

“As a nation, we know how to play ODI cricket. We need to do well in other formats as well,” he said.

Bangladesh U19 to tour Pakistan in November

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has unveiled the schedule of the Bangladesh U19 Cricket Team’s tour to Pakistan.

Bangladesh will tour Pakistan to play a five-match ODI series, which will mark Bangladesh U19 team’s first tour to the country after a gap of 15 years.

As per the schedule released by the BCB, the two sides will contest in a four-day match and five ODIs from November 1 to 19 in Faislabad.

Bangladesh U-19 last toured Pakistan in November 2007. The only four-day match played between the two teams during this time was played at the National Stadium, which ended in a draw.

On this occasion, the PCB Director – International Zakir Khan, in a PCB-released statement, said that 2022 is the year to host international teams in Pakistan, therefore, is looking forward to welcoming the Bangladesh U-19 team in November.

“2022 has been all about hosting international teams and in this relation, we look forward to welcoming Bangladesh U19 side. While this will be the first junior international series in Pakistan in 15 years, third time in as many years Bangladesh will send their side to Pakistan following their women’s tour in November 2019 and the men’s team for a Test in February 2020.

“The U19 series comprising a four-day and five limited-over matches will provide opportunities to players from either side to showcase their skills and earn the nod of their coaches and selectors.

“With this series to be played in the backdrop of the first of its kind Pakistan Junior League, the U19 series underscores Pakistan Cricket Board’s vision and efforts to invest in its PCB Development Programme.”

It is pertinent to mention that the squad and training schedule of the Pakistan U19 team will be announced in due course.
